When l found out how much my ticket would have cost if I’d have paid for it, I finally realized why they call it “alternative rock." There are many alternative things you can do with $35: buy 17 black bean bumtos, or put a down payment on a new Hyundai, just to name two. I’d never heard the Crash Test Dummies before, but you can imagine how pleasing it was to find out that they are not a "new" band at all, but actually a supergroup comprised of Kenny Loggins, the Indigo Girls, Dan Fogelberg, a herd of endangered bighorn sheep who were rescued from a vicious shearing by Natalie Merchant and Generation X author Douglas Coupland, who anchored their gorgeous folky melodies with a flurry of ironic yet poignant pop-culture references. Their fresh, exciting, anthemic sound was accentuated by the stage antics of Coupland, who, obviously dizzy with alienation, attempted suicide with a letter opener at least six or seven times dunng the set, until finally, as the band revved into a droning, buzz saw cover of Christopher Cross’ late 70s hit “Sailing," the young auteur collapsed in a pool of vomit. As the house lights came up, the crowd seemed awed by the Dum mies, who are without question on the vanguard of modem music Costello and his Attractions followed soon afterward In recent years, Costello has re-tooled his image from that of curmudgeonly young misanthrope to curmudgeonly middle-aged misanthrope, a shift that has not left many fans bewildered. The question on everybody’s mind was whether the 40-year-old Elvis - recently reunited with his longtime backup group the As — could still do the straight-ahead rock thing, after wandering for the last few yean into more difficult stylistic termor y (a penod that seemed to come to a head with his recent collaborations with the Brodsky stnng quartet). ^ Elvis did his best to answer yes, opening the show with the dnving "No Action 1 from Tks Year’s Model, following it up with a number of up-tempo, if somewhat muddled tunes from the new LP, Brutal You*. The sound was classic Attractions, frenzied and difficult, defined mainly by Costello’s coarse scrumming and the ever-wonky, frenzied noodlings of keyboardist Steve Nieve. But Costello is 40 yean old, and these attempts to re-capture the vibrant anger of his youth teemed a little contrived next to the dower number. (“London 1 . Bnlliant Pa rade " “Patty Glrt,“ “Deep Da* Truthful Minor”) that better revealed Elvis sublime penchant for merging brilliandy twined lyric* with odd and original melodic*. And although the Attraction* were competent, I think I'd have been happier seeing Elvis sitting in a chair alone, re-working them in a new light, catching nuances that were hidden back in the days when the young man was spitting out bn 11.am e in nuni. overdrive. As it was. the Attraction.' predictable sonic, smacked a little too much of no«algia; I'd wager that Elvis pounng his heart out over a beat-up acoustic guitar would be about as “alternative as you d ever get Richard Fausset Ekns Costello and the Attractions and the Crash Test Dummies will play ( hastam ! ark Amphitheater m Atlanta June 19.
