[cns/Atlanta trio
rvelt singer-bassist
their Athens debut
in May when they
opened for Hayride. Other members of
Slobber include Perry Bell on guitar
and backing vocals and Mykc Robinson
on drums; both arc Atlanta residents. I
sat down with John, enjoyed some Big
K Lemon-lime soda, and talked about
his new band. Here’s some of the
highlights:
Flagpole: How did you meet these guys?
John Crain: I grew up with them in
Greenville, S. C. We used to play heavy metal
covers in high school before we all went our
separate ways. I did move to Atlanta last sum
mer, but 1 didn’t like it, so I moved back here
If things go well, we’ll need to rehearse a little
more frequently and I might have to move
back, but we’ll see
FP: Did you move to Atlanta right after
Roosevelt broke up?
Crain: No. Slobber wasn’t an immediate
thing where 1 was planning on playing with
those guys We would just
play together every so often,
and then finally when we
did decide to form a band,
that’s when I did move But
we were only rehearsing
once a week, and 1 said,
'Well, if we’re only going
to rehearse once a week.
I’ll just drive up.’ 1 didn't
like the job 1 had, hang
ing up public advertise
ments, usually in bath
rooms. I would be in
there, trying to drill a
hole in the bathroom
wall while people were,
you know, doing their
business. 1 felt degraded,
and there was definitely
no sense of pride in
what I was doing 1 was
just doing what no one else
wanted to do. 1 could have gotten a better
job, but that just spoiled it for me. 1 was glad
to come back to Athens
FP: How did the recording of the new CD.
Killing Yourself, go 7
Crain: Very well When I recorded Shingle
with Roosevelt, we decided to release it on
vinyl, and it was a real chore getting it
pressed. So I wasn’t looking forward to
doing a new album, but since we did it on
disc, it wasn’t really a big deal. Just the fact
that we aren’t on a big label got us pushed
behind some other people who had a re
lease date. The CD was supposed to be out
the beginning of the year. But it wasn’t as
much a hassle, and the recording went well.
Only a few takes here and there — about
half the songs are first takes and most of
the others were second takes.
FP: DidCrmnal
Records approach you, or did you have
to approach them 7
Crain: Crmnal Records is just something
we made up We’re not really on any sort
of label. There are other Criminal Records,
for instance the one in Atlanta (it’s a record
storel, but we spelled ours slightly differ
ent. So that’s our loophole there.
FP: Is a CD more expensive than vinyl?
Crain: Yes, definitely, and when you do the
artwork in full color and have the booklet
fold out, that’s more expensive than black
and white or just two colors. We figured if
we were going to do a full-leaf disc, we
wanted to do it right. So we got a loan to
make sure the music was done right and
the overall composition looked good I’m
definitely pleased with the finished prod
uct.
FP: Howdyou
pick the name
Slobber’
Crain: When
people hear the
name Slobber,
they think it re
fers to something
sloppy. That’s not
really the case
The name came
about when we
were writing a
song. Some of it
was very intricate,
to the point where
we were concen
trating on what we
were doing and I
was having a hard
time trying to keep
up and 1 just forgot
to swallow and
started drooling. I was like 'Aw, man, that’s
no good,’ but Perry thought it was great.
So when we were thinking of a name, 1 said,
“What do you think about ‘SlobberT Perry
didn’t answer, but he started laughing im
mediately.
