( Hooembee 30, 1994 The CL-, 'tyiewsze That Ate the Food Column • Effie’i Cafe is also serving up traditional Southern cooking in a new restaurant named after an old Athens house of pleasure The dining room (in the old Ronnie B’s Log Cabin on Hams Street) has lots of old photos and memorabilia, and the menus feature stones of old Athens. You can get your meat and veggie lunch and dinner (lots of side dishes) Monday- Saturday. They also serve up steaks, sandwiches, salads, burgers and BBQ pork “riblets” (a house specialty). They also have a full bar • If the big game goes into extra innings and the one who wins is throne with the most TVs, then the Athens Clubhouse GrUl will probably come out on top. I’m not kidding — they have 44 TV sets that can pick up everything from ping pong to the big leagues. They’re open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, they serve a late dinner until 1:30 a m.; they have a big dining room (more than 300 seats), a full bar and pool tables. The menu features big portions of ribs, burgers, wings, salads, sandwiches, pastas, steaks and seafood. They’re in Clarke Crossings (the Target shopping center) on the Atlanta Highway. They’re expecting a crowd of about 350 people to come and sample food from 25 local restaurants and wine from four distributors Last year's gathenng was a big success: lots of great food, wine, music and socializing, and it brought in even more money than they had hoped it would Community Connection provides information and referral services to people in 11 North east Georgia counties, publishes a newsletter, "The Connector,” and puts volunteers to work They’re looking for local businesses interested in sponsonng the event If you or someone you know might be interested in being a sponsor or if you’d like to buy some tickets to the event (they would make a swell Holiday gift) call their office at 353-1313. • The Clayton St. Deli (at 445 E. Clayton, downtown) will be open from 11 p.m.-4 a m. Ernie will be serving late-night sandwiches, pastries, salads and deli food to all the night- hawks out there. Eventually they plan to serve their authentic deli menu around the clock. • If you like that good old traditional meat-and-three Southern cooking, here’s some good news. Lynn’s Cafeteria is open for lunch (11:30-2:30) and dinner (5-8), Monday through Saturday, at 2033 West Broad St. (where Kathenne’s Kitchen used to be) The sign out front says “Nothing But Good Food." Lynn’s family has been cooking downtown for decades and Lynn has been over at the Mayflower for the last few years Besides daily meat specials and a good selection of side veggies, they’ve got salads, chili and homemade desserts. • Watch for the opening of the new location of Loco’s Deli & Pub at the Goody’s & Ingles (Athens West) Shopping Center on Atlanta Highway near Mitchell Bndge Road In their two older locations Locoes does a great job of being both a pleasant pub to hang out in and a good sandwich and deli shop. When I stopped by the new location the other day they weren’t quite ready to open the doors, but they were getting close. • The 20-session Master Gardener Program at the State Botanical Garden is not for everyone: It really requires a solid commitment of time and a little money. But it’s a unique opportunity if you’re senous about gardening and want to get a little more serious. Classes meet at the State Botanical Garden and are mostly taught by UGA faculty who are expert in specific areas. From early February until the end of March participants will leam everything they ever wanted to know about composting, soil ennchment, disease, bugs, landscape design, irriga tion, and vegetable, fruit, and herb gardening, and much more. And when you’re done with the course work, you still don't get to be an official Georgia Master Gardener until you put in 50 hours of volunteer community service working with the State Botanical Garden or the County Cooperative Extension Service. For more info call 542-6156. • When 1 started up the FOOD column at Flagpole more than a year ago, it took me a long time to decide on that name. 1 consulted fnends, advisors. Tarot readers, bartenders, the stars, etc., etc. Now I don’t mind that other papers in town have started running a recipe here and there, but just recently one of them has begun to run a weekly column using the same name: FOOD! I guess if 1 had gotten the name properly copyrighted and protected I could take legal action, but it's probably a little too late for that now.
