Ornette
Coleman
The Empty Foxhole /
Blue Note
This album is a reis
sue of a classic 1966
session as part of the
newly introduced Blue
Note Connoisseur Series
The reissue contains
photographs from the
original session date plus original cover artwork
and poems by Ornette Coleman The Empty Fox
hole* follows the general rule of Coleman record
ings: You will either love this album or dismiss it as
complete nonsense
The title trock features Ornette on the trumpet,
and it sounds strikingly similar to the intro to 'Na
ture Boy.* except the song seems to blur any sense
of a definitive pitch The drumming of Coleman's
then 10-year-old son. Ornette Denardo Coleman,
is very mature for a kid. but he is overly sympa
thetic to his father's style of harmolodics on ‘Good
Old Days,* Ornette displays his technical virtuosity
on his customary instrument, the alto sax This tune
(I use the term "tune* loosely) hints at Coleman's
early influences of R&B and Texas blues later, on
'Sound Gravitation.* Colemon plays the violin with
unbridled energy and the sheer confidence of a
concert master Treeway Express* seems to wan
der in certain sections, and sometimes Ornettes
trumpeting feels unpolished luckily, bassist Charlie
Hoden ties the loose ends on most of the tracks,
proving that he was one of the few bassists that
could fathom Ornette's wildly unique idiom of
harmolodics
Overall, most of this album works, yet some ar
eas could use adjustment The most amazing im
port of this album is the fort that you cannot play
this for background dinner music, for it demands
your undivided attention The Empty Foxhole* is a
testament to the fart that Ornette remained true to
his style, even when giants like Dizzy Gillespie and
Charlie Mingus dismissed him as a charlatan to the
jazz scene As Coleman said himself. ‘Music will
never fall short of an honest effort when it has love,
talent and sincerity in its performance' This album
is all of that and then some
