One of the Athens area’s best industries is art. Dunng the
next two weeks, artists from around Athens will be holding
sales for the holiday season. This tradition started 23 years
ago with Jerry and Kathy Chappelle at Happy Valley Studios
outside Watkinsville and has spread to several locations in
the Athens vicinity. It is a time when Athens patrons hop
from studio to studio to buy gifts for the holiday season or just
to view the new work coming out of local studios Many pa
trons from Atlanta make the trek into the area to get bar
gains on quality work. At different locations potters, glass-
blowers, metal workers, weavers, paper makers and many oth
ers will be exhibiting the work they have constructed this
past year. Holiday sale time is the best time of the year for
most of these artists It is also the best time for those who are
looking for that special gift to give for the holidays
“I have been doing this since 1984," says DeWitt Smith
of DeWitt Pottery in Watkinsville. “It is the primary sale
day for the year Many people from Atlanta come for this
sale ” Smith indicated that the bulk of his mailing for the sale
goes to Athens area patrons, but also over 20 percent of his
mailing goes to the Atlanta area.
David Morgan, who will be showing at the Strand, says,
“This is the only retail sale I have at all. Most of my works
are shown through galleries.” Morgan says the pottery he
is showing this weekend has different carvings and colors
than his earlier work. Athens residents will have the
chance to see how his works have evolved in the past year.
Michael Simon and Ron Meyers, who have been show
ing together for 14 years, will have their sale at Meyers
Studio this Saturday until 4 p.m. “This is the big time for
sales,” says Simon. “Rather than buy for themselves they
buy for gifts.” Simon indicated that he wished that the
local patrons would treat themselves to the quality work
from the area, as well. He and Ron have given up on a
starting time and will start selling whenever you get there.
No more hiding things in the woods until the sale starts.
Athens patrons have an opportunity to give that dif
ferent type of gift for the holidays. This is Christmas shop
ping that will be more pleasurable, as you will not be bom
barded with mass-produced junk, but individually crafted
work made by people you know. It is a chance to get that
shopping over with early and an opportunity to see what’s
new in the local studios And finally, you will be able to
give that gift that better represents individuality.
