REVOLUTION PARTY
If takes ambitious people to create new
things. Driven not by money but love.
Caroline Frye loves music. And their Christ
mas party at the Atomic Music Hall on Sat-'
urday, Dec. 10, will show off some of her fa-
vonte bands.
Even when she attended UGA majoring
in Political Science she contacted the Rock
the Vote folks and put together a huge con
cert at Legion Field complete with voter reg
istration booths and all the nght guest speak
ers. That was back in *91 pnor to the National
election.
When Caroline finished school she moved
to Washington D.C. for an internship with
Senator Nunn. She worked on the Clinton
campaign as well. Guess what one of the
things was she did? She helped put together
the talent for the inauguration.
She worked records out of her house in
D C., which basically means she ran up her
phone bill enthusiastically promoting records
to radio stations. Eventually, she came back
to Athens where she knew the scene and
knew Nelson Wells who was anxiously wait
ing a chance to quit his job and work in the
music business. Caroline had picked up the
Hootie and the Blowfish ep Kootchypop, an
album by (he Richmond Music Cooperative,
and Atlanta’s Three Walls Down Btuldmg My
House.
Upon setting up shop in downtown Ath
ens Caroline received another fantastic break
— Amy Ray hired Revolution to work her
Daemon releases by James Hall, The Oblivi
ous, and Lay Quiet Awhile. Since.Revolution
has begun they’ve worked over 35 albums,
begun managing Fashion Central, Hundred
Year Sun, and James Hall, and now have a
full-time staff of five.
“We’re making money to pay our bills but
I feel really lucky,” said Caroline. “We don’t
owe anybody money and all the money’s that’s
coming in we put it into the business" They
started with a few used desks, some used
phones, and only a few hundred dollars. Then
Ten Donnelly and Karen Gaitens came in as
interns — they now work full-time. Along
with Nelson and Caroline there’s also Dave
Bailey who works as Caroline’s assistant, ac
countant, and helps with the business man
agement end for James Hall, currently on
Geffen Records Management and radio pro
motion is what Revolution does What about
a band's worst nightmare job: booking? “I
booked the Veldt and the Sex Police for two
years and I won’t do it again,” Caroline said
emphatically. “Especially when there are
people like Rich Levi in Atlanta who love
doing it and do a great job of it.”
Caroline is hoping to pick up more na
tional record label contracts. Revolution is
currently working two Columbia albums for
Dag and Mother May 1.
“I have a friend named Benji Gordon. He’s
pretty young, and he works with Soul Asy
lum, he’s their A6lR guy,” Caroline explained
“1 just met him in LA and I’ve known Mother
May I for a long time and 1 used to work with
the guys that play in Dag. 1 was in LA about 6
weeks ago and 1 kept heckling him about
working the Mother May 1 and he introduced
me to the product manager We really just
pestered them. Columbia, until they gave us
the project.
The bands that will perform at the Atomic
on the 10th are Red River Dave, a Bliss re
union, Fashion Central (they’re from Rich
mond, VA and used to be called Schwa), and
Danielle Howie of Lay Quiet Awhile will also
perform. Howie has been touring with the
Indigo Girls in Europe promoting her solo
career.
