Hillary Meister
the soft spoken beatnik
cousin of the flagpole
Christmas album
— Buy It Or Be Clueless
Wedged into your tape deck, The Soft-Spoken Beatnik
Cousm of the Flagpole Chnstmas Album features about an hour
of raving talk from 25 of our favorite poets and wnters from
the Athens- Atlanta area, in addition to a few random freaks
who thought >t would be “avant-garde” to record themselves
talking and then sell it to people (for $849).
Among the readings on the album are pieces by Gayle
Danley, the 1994 National Poetry Slam champion, Randy Blazak, the nationally-known
spoken word subverter of corporate culture, Athens CEO Gwen O’Looney, and Flagpole’s
own Music Editor Hillary Meister and its remote documenter of ominous events, Rich
ard Fausset The readings range from free-verse style poetry to a meditation on the na
ture of latkes by Meister.
This is Flagpole’s first attempt to release a spoken-word compilation at Chnstmas,
but the tracks retain the loose, raucous feel of previous, music-onented albums. The
tracks from Athens performers were laid down at Full Moon Studios by Mark Smith, and
the Atlanta tracks were recorded at the 16-Track Snack YT Shack by Rob Gal. Long
Play Records is promoting the Beaauk Cousm both nationally and locally. All sales pro
ceeds go directly to the very worthy VAC (Various Area Charities).
Friday. Dec. 9. is a big day for the album not only because it’s supposed to be released
that day, but also because that night at the 40 Watt, there will be a spoken word concert,
an orgy of verbiage from several of the performers featured on the album, followed by a
special musical guest In keeping with the organic nature of this project, some perform
ers have not yet been contacted regarding this show. This is OK. Everyone on the album
is hereby invited to come and rant.
