In light of Ms. Tori Amos' covering 'losing My Religion' on the Higher Learning soundtrack (do I
really have to tell you how wretched it Is?) and the brilliant singer-songwriter Sam Phillips' making her
upcoming screen debut in the third Die Hard epic, I can only surmise that the end is near.
Be afraid. Be very af ^id. . _. ..

MUSIC
Bar Tab
(Georgia Theatre) OK, 111 tell you this: Bar Tab Is
made up of members of an extremely popular
band based out of Athens, but (before you go off
all half-cocked) it's not the extremely popular Ath
ens band who recently released a semi-lame gui
tar-heavy album with a one-word title
Conway
tFrijoieros) contrary to my earlier belief that this
band's namo had something to do with that dead
Nashville Icon, I would now tell you to expect
harder-edged pop stuff
Greg Holyfield
(Allen's) true country covers & originals
Helium Kldz
(40 Watt) the better part of a year ago this band
achieved god-head status with a show at
Frijoieros. but now the Kldz bring the spirit, the
magic, the squirrely agit-pop, of Andy, Colin, Dave
& Terry (pre-Mummer) to the 40 Watt; although
Helium Kidz is a cool name....
Michael
(Frijoieros) I’ve always used words like swirly and
atmospheric to describe these guys, so 1 will again.
Athens Songwriters Showcase
(High Hat Blues Duty features MC Joe Baracco,
Where's Anita?, Rick Fowler, Eddie Giken, the Scat
tering with special guest Jason Marcum
Spud
(40 Watt) Jim & the boys toss aside their
Stompers personas to become New Traditional
ists (somewhere in the final stages of de-evolu
tion); if I could make an addition to their set-list. It
would probably be “Sloppy 0 Saw My Baby Gaffin').'
Yeah, there's another thing 111 never do.
Warren Southall
(Lowery's) acoustic-based covers & originals;
Warren Is also hosting open mike night

THURSDAY, JANUARY 19TH
MUSIC
The Buzz
(Buzzard's Roost) the venue: where Lulu's used
to be; the band: 'afternative/pop/punk' stuff
Dashboard Saviors
(Half Moon Pub)after recently buying an Import
CD of Old Ways (thanks for that "Special Price'
sticker, David Geffen. I felt a LOT better about part
ing with that $20), I found myself wondering when
the new Saviors album Is coming out. Anyone?
Funkomatic
(Atomic Music Hall) are releasing their debut CD
soon, with the single — 'Booty Police.' Yikes.
In Cahoots
IHigh Hat Blues dub) are celebrating their 10th
anniversary with the release of a new CD; these
guys are something of an Athens ‘nstitution (and
they've kept their Integrity), so I must heartily rec
ommend this
John Mlley
(Frijoieros) headlining an evening of improvtsa-
tlonal music with Tobin Buttram & jamie DeRevere
Ueske & Acquaviva
(Frijoieros) guitor & drums improv duo
Simpletons
(Lowery's) rock covers & originals
SnowbaH
(40 Watt) when I asked them for a description, I
got stuff like “jerks who try too hard' and 'really
lame pop;' well, they're In the band, so they're
gonna be a little bit biased, but this Is occasionally
aggro/occaslonally not VU-ish pop stuff.
Under Waterfall
ICity Bar) urn, think Phlsh. the Dead, Allmans,
you get the picture. File under 'Groove' and take
your hockysack
Versus
!40 Watt) if anything. I'm thankful the name
didn't come from that Pearl Jam album (invokes
cordescending titters from hip Indie rock guys),
and I'm told that Owlngs thinks they have street-
cred. So there.

Hate bombs
(Atomic Music Hall) certain friends of mine be
rated me endlessly for missing these guys at
Beef stock, so maybe.
Helmet
(40 Watt) Am Rep vets who have veered closer
and closer to heavy metal since Meantime; these
are intelligent fellas but there's just a bit too much
testosterone pumping through their songs to win
me over completely; regardless, if I'm feeling
brave, 111 probably go; much like the Jesus Lizard,
this might be the best show youll ever see, or the
worst; kudos to Velena for booking an early show
Kepone
(40 Watt) Richmond, Va., natives who do that
noise-rock thing; Indudes ex-members of Honor
Role & GWAR; I'd much rather you buy the new
Mule album, but, hey...
Normaitown Flyers

I can put It, friend.

Super vixens
(Atomic Music Hall) In their words, 'an all-girl
garage-pop band with songs that would put a
smile on Phil Spector's face'; If that ain't cool
enough, they also have a go-go dancer; members
Include Diana Kate Rieve (vox, gtr, sngwrtr),
Michelle Thomason (bss), Deborah Wall (drms),
Beth Hamilton (bk vox) & Christie Thompson (dnak
Kim Shattuck would be proud — Count me in.
