Helen Thomas, the White House Bureau Chief of
United Press International, gave the Ralph McGill Lec
ture Wednesday, Jan. 11, at UGA. She was the first fe
male member of the National Press Club and its first fe
male president. Most will recognize her as the voice that
closes all Presidential press conferences with “Thank you,
Mr. President.”
Thomas praised the press, noting its importance to de
mocracy.
“A nation ignorant and free never was and never will be a
democracy,” she said. “Dissing the so-called liberal media is
an anachronism. I say, where are they? The conservative col
umnists have cornered the market—and the airwaves. Where
are the Ralph McGills when we really need them?”
Thomas acknowledged that the press does make mis
takes. However, “Our report card is on the front page ev
eryday,” she said. That is more than one can say of our
detractors or even the government.”
Thomas related a story about President Gerald Ford,
who once said that if God had created the world in six
days, he wouldn’t have rested on the seventh; he would
be too busy explaining things to Helen Thomas.
Thomas’ reply?
“And I hope I would be asking my favorite question:
‘Why?’”

Expectations are that the new Republican-dominated Con
gress will want to cut or abolish the funding. If you feel differ
ently, now’s the time to start letting your Congressman know,
since Congressional hearings are beginning. Charles Norwood,
our 10th District Representatice, is not on the subcommittee
conducting the hearings, but eventually he’ll have to vote on
the funding. His address is: Rep. Charles Norwood, 170?
