We Get Letters
P. O. Box 1027 Athens, GA 30603
Dear Flagpole:
I want to comment on the c iide written in the Jan. 11 issue in the *We Get Letters'
section.
The gentleman writing the article, indeed, sounds like a responsible, law-abiding citizen
and employee, but, perhaps, a bit paranoid.
For starters. I don't see anything dangerous about the situation described. What is
threatening about a fellow citizen attempting to cross the street with a cup in his hand,
taking a drag off his cigarette? The fact he "inhaled deeply' does, in no way. indicate
suspicious activity. Apparently. Mr. Ludd is not a smoker or knowledgeable about the effects
of nicotine on the body over time. The longer you smoke, the longer you drag.
Mr. ludd's 'factors' for reporting this person are merely pathetic assumptions. Ludd
reported that this 'suspect' was carrying an unmarked cup. So what? You will see people
walking with a cup in their hand quite frequently. His second factor is almost as funny. He
states that because this person is smoking an unfiitered cigarette, we should go ahead and
assume it is not tobacco, but marijuana. The sentence about 'rolling your own' paralleling
with unlawful activity is ridiculous. People have rolled their own cigarettes since tobacco
was first harvested and will continue to do so. In fact, sales on loose tobacco have risen in
the past year. To what do we attribute this to? Increased marijuana use? I don't think so.
Besides, any avid smoker would claim that unfiltered cigarettes result in the purest tobacco
flavor. The third and possibly most ludicrous claim is the person's flee for the other side of
the road. The suspect looked both ways on account of the traffic he needed to penetrate.
And the fourth. I can't see the delinquent behavior in graDbing a Flagpole. There is nothing
the matter with strolling along, glancing at the paper, sipping a drink and smoking a
cigarette.
Mr. Ludd sounds as if he is a little restless with his job and paranoid of societal activities.
The fact that the authorities did not respond to his report just proves the absurd over-
reaction he had to obviously nothing.
Mr. Ludd, while patrolling an area, try checking things out a little more thoroughly next
time. Be a good citizen yourself by not jumping the gun and saving the authorities some
time and energy. It might just be me. but the so-called 'suspect" sounded neither suspicious
or terroristic, but an average citizen minding his own business.

To the editor:
I ?m writing in response to Mr. Ri
chard Zimdars’ letter published on the
17th of January in the Athens Daily
News. I am in complete agreement that
the proposed cuts to PBS and the Na
tional Endowment for the Arts are not
in the public interest and would be det
rimental to our culture. I am incredu
lous that the GOP would consider cut
ting funds to “Sesame Street,”
“Mr.Rogers’ Neighborhood” and
“Barney.” The GOP rhetoric for past
elections had focused on the supposed
decline of our culture and the subse
quent loss of our moral center. PBS is
an island surrounded by a sea of tabloid
news shows and Kiss and Tell talk shows.
How can the party who aspires for the
moral high ground cut off the last bas
tion of taste and decency in a sea of cable
TV muck?
As to the proposed cuts to the NEA,
it is a classic case of “throwing the baby
out with the bath water.” In an effort to
“protect” the public from the “unseemly”
art of Serrano, Mapplethorpe and oth
ers, the GOP solution is to cut off fund
ing. The money that supports the “con
troversial” artist also supports the Au
gusta Symphony and the Alliance The
atre.
In an effort to see where my elected
representative, Charles Norwood, stands
on this issue I called his office recendy.
I was told that Mr. Norwood favors the
cuts and I told his staffer that I didn’t
think it wise from a political point of
view to support a position that 70 per
cent of Americans polled supported.
This was in regards to a poll that PBS
did recently and the results were a news
item on CNN. The staffer told me “That
study was rigged. You can ask any ques
tion and get the answer you want.” I was
incensed that this little troll would dare
call the poll “rigged.” Maybe we should
do a poll to see if Norwood can get re
elected if he continues to support cuts
to the arts?
