munity safety. Judge Steve Jones will
lead a panel discussion with Nancy

Bird walk. Sandy Creek Nature Cen
ter and the Oconee County Audubon
Society will help host the third in the
spring series of Bird Walks Saturday,
April 13, at 8 a.m. at the State Botanical
Garden of Georgia. Part'cipanls don't
have to be experienced bird watchers for
this program, which is designed for
adults and families with older children.

Red clay. Environmentalists and plan
ning directors will participate in an ex
amination of land use planning in North
east Georgia during the eighth annual
Red Clay Conference to be held Satur
day, April 13, from 9 a.m.-4:15 p.m. at

Guest speakers and local government
officials will discuss legal tools for pro
tecting natural resources at the local
level, the connection between land use
decisions and transportation, ecosystem
management and preserving the rural
character of Georgia 316. Informal ques

lic: $2 students and professors, $5 gen
eral public and $60 attorneys seeking
continuing legal education credit.
International talent. Join the Inter
national Services and Programs (ISP)

from around the world will showcase

Rock and gem. The Athens Rock and
Gem Club will have its annual spring
show Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m.-4
p.m. at Sandy Creek Park's Community
Building. Free, but park entrance fees
apply. The show will feature demonstra
tions of cutting cabachons, final steps
in making jewelry, flint knapping, gem
trees, interior carving, silver smithing,
stone carving, toe rings, tumbling
stones and wind chimes. Visitors can

Cherokee. Cherokee genealogy expert
Martha Redus will present her seminar
"Cherokee Genealogy: From Family
Folklore to Proven Ancestry" in the Ath
ens-Clarke County Library auditorium

p.m. Redus is a professional genealo
gist, lecturer and teacher specializing in
Cherokee research. She writes a gene
alogy column for Dreamcatcher, the
quarterly publication of the Native
American Center of Georgia. She is a
member of the Cherokee Nation of Okla
homa and has ancestral lines in Geor
gia, North Carolina, Tennessee and
