WEDNESDAY,
APRIL fO
Apenas Atenas (40 Walt) High-en
ergy Brazilian-flavored funky reggae.
Belizbeha opens.
Belizbeha (40 Walt) A sort of melt
ing pot of hip-hop. soul, jazz and
iunk. The band alternates between
songs rapped by a guy who-sounds
an awful lot like Digital
Underground's Humpty Hump, and
smooth soul numbers whispered by
a strong female vocalist. They're from
Vermont.
Black Thorn (City Bar) Jazz.
Brian Burke & Friends (Alien's)
Tonight the Normaltown Flyer will be
joined by Davis Causey (of the
Randall Bramblelt Band) and Tom
Ryan. Expect a whole mess of coun
try-rock originals and classics from
Elvis to Hank to the Stones. Brian
calls his backup band No Tellin', be
cause he never knows who might
show up to play.
Gryphon (Atomic Music Hall) Al
though one foot is planted firmly in
the song-based history of the 70s (a
la CCR, Eagles, etc.), Gryphon brings
a fresh new approach to non-grunge
folk rock. Strong vocal harmonies
and technical know-how are in abun
dance here. Check it out. 10:30 p.m.
Chris & John Osborn (from In
Like Flynn) (DT's Down Under)
Acoustic versions of In Like Flynn
songs, plus some favorites from other
artists.
Mr. Pittaful (Flanagan’s) I couldn't
get confirmation on this at press time,
but I'm pretty sure this is actually Mr.
Pittiful's Blues Bandits. Don't quote
me on that, though.
Velvet Jones (Atomic Music Hall)
Alternative metal along the lines of
Alice in Chains and Faith No More.
12:30 p.m.
Viva La Diva (Atomic Music Hall)
Angst pop. Touring in support of their
debut CD, Greatest Hits, Volume 1.
Playing with Gryphon and Velvet
Jones. 11:30 p.m.
THURSDAY,
APRIL ft
Addison Blue (40 Walt) I've seen
this band several times over the last
few years, and thought the band’s
"change of direction” was a sign of
impending trouble. Wrong. The new
songs (and there's a whole set list full
of 'em) are smarter, more dynamic,
and all around better than the
Addison Blue of six months ago.
Benefit for the Film “The Com
fort Zone” (Atomic Music Hall)
Tonight's performances include the
debut of Poolside (12:15 p.m.), a
brand new band featuring Ballard
Lesemann (Roosevelt, The Germans),
Curtiss Pernice (Porn Orchard, Sub
traction), Frank MacDonnell (Mag
neto) and Sam Mixon (Porn Orchard).
Must I say "Wow?!" Also playing will
be the incredible Jucifer (11 p.m.)
and The Lost Man (10 p.m.). Local
poet Douglas Martin will do some
spoken word stuff in between bands.
Gov’t Mule (Georgia Theatre) War
ren Haynes (of the Allman Brothers)
leads this three-piece, which also in
cludes Allen Woody (bass) and Malt
Abts (drums). Haynes is one of the
all-time great blues-based rock gui
tarists, and the fact that the Gov't
Mule record was recorded almost
entirely "live" (in the studio) is a tes
tament to his skill. Derek Trucks
opens.
Groove Theory (UGA Campus;
Georgia Hall) Sponsored by CBCP
and Contemporary Concerts, a divi
sion of University Union.
Kathleen Turner Overdrive
(Roadhouse) The way Creative Loaf
ing mentions these guys in every
other sentence, you'd think they were
the only decent band in Atlanta. You'd
be wrong, of course, but the vote's
still out on KTO.
Sandfly (Allen's) Classic rock cov
ers and originals where harmony is
key.
Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock covers
and originals.
Sunny Ledford (DT's Down Under)
The band just recorded a couple of
songs in Kip Jones' studio. Live,
they play about 40 percent covers
(from Afghan Whigs to Buffalo Tom
to the Stones to Lynyrd Skynyrd)
and 60 percent originals. Judging
from the originals I've heard, the
band plays a kind of light pop
along the lines of Van Morrison
meets Skynrd or CCR.
3 lb. Thrill (40 Watt) Uncle Green is
dead. Long live 3 Lb. Thrill. This newly
revitalized version ol Uncle Green is the
best one yet. They’re like the best ele
ments of Matthew Sweet by way of
Sugar. See article on Page 21.
Derek Trucks & the Derek Trucks
Band (Georgia Theatre) He's like 17
years old now, but has already jammed
with Joe Walsh, Buddy Guy and the
Allman Brothers, has opened for and
played with Mr. Bob Dylan, and played
on Tinsley Ellis' Storm WarningCD. It's
just not fair.
FRIDAY,
APRIL 12
A Night of Acoustic Music
(Morton Theatre) This is a special all
acoustic show, featuring The War
blers ("Soothing like stream water,
The Warblers’ songwriting abilities
combine modern issues of today’s
society with the traditional art of
storytelling.’—J. Brandon Tidwell),
The Hot Burritos and Bloodkin.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and
advance tickets are available now at
downtown record stores.
Jim Carroll (40 Watt) This is a spo
ken word performance from the poet,
rocker ("People Who Died"), and author
of The Basketball Diaries (which was,
of course, the basis for the film of the
same name). After Carroll's show,
Atlanta's excellent Smoke will play.
Cookieman (Washington Street Tav
ern) Comic relief rock with some for
ays into classical.
Dames Ferry (DT's Down Under)
Country-folk-rock.
Jonny Hyde Quartet (Atomic Music
Hall) This Atlanta band has been noted
for its “ripping guitar licks’ and "the
haunting vocals of Johnny Andrews.’
Word ol mouth on this band is huge.
Mel & the Party Hats (Georgia The
atre) Here's the content of a postcard Mel
sent me a while ago: ’FYI — I wear a
skirt made of lies and although some
guys in the band broke down and bought
a couple pairs of-cool pants, there’s no
real '80s look. About 2/3 of our songs
are '80s icovers], the other part is Min
istry, The Who, NIN, Smiths, Nancy
