Sinatra, some originals, and AC/DC (no,
I'm not) [sic]. Our show is carefully
unchoreographed, Sincerely comma,
Mel." Okay, then. 2 sets starting at 10:30
p.m.
Simpletons (Lowery’s) Rock covers
and originals.
Smoke (40 Walt) It's probably fitting
that I think of beautiful ashtrays when I
hear this band, because they combine
the best of what's beautiful and whal's
ugly, and make it into a whole new crea
ture. The band plays alter Jim Carroll's
spoken word periormance.
Strawberry Presents (Atomic Music
Hall) Playing with the Johnny Hyde
Quartet and 300 Joules.
300 Joules (Atomic Music Hall) The
band has been exploring the punkier
side of things lately, and is playing to
night with Strawberry Presents and the
Johnny Hyde Quartet.
Wide Open (Night Owl Lounge) Coun
try covers and originals.
SATURDAY,
APRIL IS
Hank Bird & Borderline (Night Owl
Lounge) Rock & country covers and
originals.
Cooperative Arts Union Benefit
(Atomic Music Hall) There will be a re
ception at 8:30 p.m. The performances
include Viceroy with Aviso (mem
bers of both bands together), Space
Voyage Ahem... and Oudeman
(which is a sort of tribal spoken word
thing from Steve of Radio:Tahiti). SVA
headlines. The Cooperative Arts Union
seeks to help local artists network with
one another and to eventually provide
low-rent studio space to artists of all
kinds. The group meets every other
Wednesday at the Dogwood Caf6. Call
the C AU. information line at 549-2004.
Ghostmeat Presents (High Hat)
Continuing the great Saturday Afternoon
series, this week Ghostmeat Records
presents The Drovers Old Time
Medicine Show (great blu^grass from
NC), and Bill Scoggins' latest project
Willie & the Hand Factory (a sort
of pop-rock duo, and not as bluesy as
Scoggins’ work as Ramblin' Willie).
Gick (Roadhouse) One ot the best of
the crop of new bands in this tov/n. Their
songs are ferocious, and so is their live
attack. Gu.
Magnapop (40 Watt) The band hasn't
been here much in the last year or two,
and even though Rubbing Won't Help
isn't out yet, Magnapop probably won't
play here again until summer or fall. See
Ihe review of the new record on Page 22.
Mineral (40 Watt) Opening for
Magnapop.
Moe (Georgia Theatre) Creative Loaf
ing said Moe is one of the likely heirs
lo the Grateful Dead legacy, and given
that these guys have just signed.with
Sony, that may be right. Opening for
Underwaterfall.
Mrs. Atkins (The Georgia Bar) Good
old down and dirty rock'n'roll.
Underwaterfall (Georgia Theatre)
Jam-oriented groove stuff. New York's
Moe opens.
SUNDAY,
APRIL *4
The Augusta Jazz Project (Morton
Theatre) A "Salute to Swing," Ihe Big
Band sound, and Ihe music of Duke
Ellington. 3 p.m. Call 613-3770 for
more information.
The Healers (Flanagan’s) Chicago-
and Texas-slyle blues.
MONDAY,
APRIL 15
Randy Anderson Sextet (City Bar)
Jazz standards.
Wax Palm Zoo (Atomic Music Hall)
They recently did a good deal of record
ing with Taylor Montague out at Full
Moon. That's all I know.
TUESDAY,
APRIL 16
Brides of Jesus (Georgia Theatre)
Old-school funk. Opening for The
Meiers. Yes, you just read that.
Broom Room Annex (Atomic Music
Hall) This is the more straightforward
rock'n'roll arm of Radio:Tahiti. It features
Buzz Hungry's Brooks Carter on drums,
and boasts the loud, nasty guitars of Mr.
Jon Lester.
Emerson Quiet Kool (Atomic Music
Hall) Eclectic rock/pop. Afghan Whigs
meets Bad Company.
Fits (40 Watt) Playing with Spackle and
The Possibilities.
The Meters (Georgia Theatre) Yes, this
is who you think it is. The Meters were
true pioneers in the realm ol New Or
leans funk. Meters samples can be heard
on about 10,000 hip-hop records, and
their influence is worldwide. They are
playing two shows: one tonight and one
on Wednesday Ihe 17th. Watch for the
Meiers interview next issue.
Neal Pattman (Flanagan’s) More liv
ing room-style blues jams from Mr.
Pattman and his (acoustic) players.
The Possibilities (40 Watt) I heard
part ot the Possibilities’ new cassette
(LoserSteW) Ihe other day, and it shows
Kevin Lane and the boys heading away
from country and into brash early-Re-
piacements territory.
Spackle (40 Watt) The band will be
moving back to Blacksburg, Va., in
June, so their shows here are numbered.
They just did some recording out at
Elixir Studios fcr a new Ghostmeat com
pilation, but that won't be out until after
they leave. Catch 'em while you can,
cause they're one of the good ones.
Venus Drive (Roadhouse) That's right
next to Saturn Parkway, right? Hello?
Mark Wiggins (DT's Down Under)
Blues, folk and country.
Marc Pilvinsky
Dear Flagpole:
During my most recent travels. I have run across this charming
small village! Each street is lined with plaster of paris jungle
animals, and the locals dance all night and explode fire crackers
during the day! I now feel I must know what it was like for
Hemingway during his initial visit to Spain. Also, please inform
Marc and Jason that I spotted a man resembling Alice Cooper
by a pay phone in Galilee, S.C. My Goody, indeed!
