BEL CANTO
Magic Box/Atlantic
Bel Canto as a band has
really matured since their first
album. White Out Conditions,
was released nearly 10 years
ago. The music and the pro
duction are much more sophis
ticated — almost completely
gone is the spare, haunting
quality that characterized their
early efforts. Still, some things
remain the same, and despite
the use of violin, guitar, man
dolin and other instruments, the
music still depends heavily on
electronics and programming
Though Magic Box is differ
ent. it is actually a very pleas
ant surprise. The music is a
melange that is best described
as "world beat’ or “world mu
sic." although if you can imag
ine a collaboration between
Seal and the Cocteau Twins,
you might be a bit closer to the
mark. In fact, if you dig the
Cocteau Twins, you owe it to
yourself to check this out. Bel
Canto's Anneli Marian Drecker
has a great voice. Here, she is
surrounded by a very creative
mix of percussion and melody,
ranging from the song of a
simple music box to full-blown,
layered dance music. “Bel
MAGNAPOP
Rubbing Doesn't Help / Priority Records
Magnapop s third full-length release and the
follow-up to their major label debut starts off a little ^ S
more sugar-coated than any of their previous
material. In fact, it s not until the mid-section of Jar ^
their album that Magnapop returns to the speed Jy isr-
of their earlier .material. Not that this is a'bad thing . W
by any means, it just shows that they're maturing
as musicians and don't see that it ts necessary to

It's been about two years between their last ^
release and Rubbing Doesnt Help. During this „■ . A

After their old drummer left, the band took their
time in finding his replacement. The wait paid off. ■

is often compared to the sounds of Fuga2i, but I never really got the
connection. To me. Magnapop has always sounded like Magnapop
and no one else.
My only complaint with this CD involves the production. On many
of the first tracks, Linda Hopper's voice lacks the edge that is so evi
dent in her live shows and on the band's previous recordings. This is
remedied later in the album, and qn songs such as "An Apology," it-is

Screwed: Original Motion
Picture Soundtrack/
Amphetamine Reptile Records
This compilation courtesy
of AmRep started out as a
“singles only" thing but blos
somed into a full-blown
soundtrack of sorts. It accom
panies the Alex Crawford film
about Al Goldstein and Screw
Magazine. About half of the
bands involved are straight
from the stables of the AmRep
label: Hammerhead. Melvins.
Boss Hog, The Cows, and Halo
of Kitten (members of Halo of
Flies and Free Kitten). There's
also Mudhoney. The Strapping
Fieldhands, Guv’ner, Big Chief.
Black Light Rainbow, and Gear
Jammer.
Boss Hog's track. “Black
Throat," was previously re
leased, I think, on their Action
Box double single set and fea
tures ex-drummer Charles
Ondras. It rules in a way that
the DGC Boss Hog doesn't —
writhing nasty noise. The
Melvins crush on "I Like Porn"
and Mudhoney throws out a
sweet little ditty titled “Goat
Cheese." I can do without Big
Chief and their Shaft-inspired
shtick. but they don't detract
from the overall thrust of this
project.
I like this soundtrack. It's
one of the better ones I've
heard lately, and I think every
home should have one.

THE KELLEY DEAL

Go to the Sugar Altar /
Nice Records
Man, I really love the Pix
ies. I sure wish they didn't
break up. Everybody gives so
much credit to Frank Black, but
Kim Deal really is one rockin’
chick. Oh. wait a minute. This
is Kelley Deal, the prodigai sis
ter of Kim. Last time I heard her
name was about a year ago
when she was in deep doo-doo
with John Q. Law for receiving
a package full of heroin in the
mail. Or something like that.
This a three song sampler
from the album that came out
April 1 and will be called Go to
the Sugar Altar Standing on
her own, without a tremen
dously talented sister there to
overshadow her. Keiley has
made quite - showing for her
self. The first tune, an almost
self-deprecating track entitled
"Canyon," starts off with a
catchy bass line, a little snare
drum, and Kelly singing, almost
moaning. "The half life of my
life. IS NO LIFE AT ALL!" That's
when the song explodes.
The next two tracks. "How
About Hero" and "Dammit."
find themselves starting at dif
ferent speeds, the latter at an
almost "It's a Small World After
All" innocence, but always find
their way ncme to the bitchy
wailing and wall of sound that I
