What is it about getting your hair
cut that creates such strong anxiety?
Is it the anticipation of how you will
look when it is finished? But all hope
quickly falls, along with your hair to
the floor as you sit there shivering with
a wet head and shirt collar. Then, the
experience peaks as the chair is
turned slowly to view in the mirror the
splendor that is you — the you fortu
nately few get to see.
Even more demoralizing is the
permanent wave ensemble of plastic
bag and cotton wedged between your skin and hair, along with a complimentary wash
cloth to wipe away the chemicals oozing down your face. It is usually at this moment that
someone always happens to walk in that you know (or wish you did).
But all this stress and the traffic of South Milledge is forgotten if you just sit (back to the
mirror) and listen in on all the gossip that can only be heard in a situation like this down in
the heart of Five Points. Eavesdropping on tales of places and people you do not know —
a guilty pleasure overhearing that someone else has more problems than yourself. The
sound of cigarette-etched voices of women smelling of hairspray and smoke. Conversa
tions on art, trailer parks, bad dye jobs and water cooler problems competing with the
sound system and hairdryers
Maybe all this is a ploy to distr t it you from any Sampson and Delilah fantasy playing
out in your head. When the hair and magazine picture you brought in are swept away and
you are spun around, you realize that you do not feel weak You look just like yourself
(which itself may cause a little disappointment) but, with slightly fewer st r ands of hair, a
little thinner.

■■■■ DEAR DALLAS: Why have many states, including Georgia, de
cided to abandon Che 55 mph speed limit?-Concerned Motorist
■■■■ DEAR MOTORIST: Anyone can see that a lower speed limit is
more dangerous since it keeps drivers on the road longer, giving
them a lot more time to crash into each other. On the other hand, if
you raise the speed limit to a minimum of say... 95 or 100 mph, not
only will people get to where they're going more quickly, but
traffic will be greatly reduced since most people will be too
scared to even get into their goddamned cars. Of course, this is
Georgia we're talking about here, and speed limits should remain
lower around high traffic areas such as peanut stands and dog
fights. An increased speed limit would also save the state of
Georgia millions of dollars in infrastructure repairs, since driv
ers would, by law, have to compensate for missing bridges by per
forming high-speed "Dukes of Hazzard' style jumps in their cars and
trucks.—Dallas
