Our friend Flicker The next Flicker is
scheduled lor May 20, and the Flicker folks
are accepting films (Super-8 and 16mm
and films transferred to VHS) through May
11. For inspiration, check out the new
Flicker TV show every night at 10:30 on
Channel P. They're always accepting films
(already transferred to video) lor the show.
To submit, call Angie at 369-FILM.
Americaa President (PG-13) Your ba
sic boy/president-meets-girl/lobbyist,
good-vs.-evil (Republican), proud-to-be-
an American sort of story with great one-
liners from the While House staff. Politi
cal commentators and movie critics alike
swear this movie just might get Clinton
reelected. (Alps)
The Birdcage (R) In Miami's South
Beach, amidst a sea of mostly unclothed
in-line skaters and above a strip of drag
clubs, live Armand and Albert (Robin Wil
liams & Nathan Lane). One day, Armancfs
son shows up to announce that he is mar
rying the daughter of an ultraconservative
Senator (Gene Hackman) and has invited
her family down to meet the folks. So
Armand, Albert and their maid Agador
(Spartacus) put on their best show. Tons
of fun! (Mall Outside)
Brain Candy (R) What would it be like if
the whole country was made up of the
same five people repeated over & over
again, all on Prozac? Likea full-length fea
ture film by the Kids in the Hall: a couple of
funny parts interspersed with some not funny
parts. Your call. (Mall Inside & Outside)
Celtic Pride (PG-13) No, not arrogant
druids, it's the Boston Celtics. Dan
Aykroyd and Daniel Stem are fans fumed
ultra-fanatical when they kidnap the rival
teams star player. Yeah, OK, more sports
humor (Beechwood)
Executive Decision (R) A nerve-wrack
ing race-against-thfrdock, must-saveevery-
bo^irvthe-hijacked-plane-from-the-nerve-
gas-bomb-in-midair-adion-adventure-sort
of thing. Kurt Russell is so smooth he can
save the country anti pick up the stewardess
at the same time. (Beechwood)
Fargo (R) Yessiree Bob, Minnesota.
Where the women are strong (and smart
and very pregnant, in the case of our hero
ine Frances McDormand), the men are
good-looking (except for the funny-look
ing ones like our criminal Steve Buscemi),
and the children may or may not be above
average. Yep, a dark comedy from the
Coen Brothers where accents are every
thing, you betcha. (Mall Inside)
Fear (R) Nicole, like all 16-year-old girts,
yearned tor a man who was strong and
sensitive and cared about her more than
anything else in the world, but she got
Marky Mark gone psychopathic. First love
becomes deadly obsession — the plot
that will not die. And I know you've all been
waiting desperately for Alyssa Milano to
appear in another movie. (Mall Outside)
Flirting With Disaster (R) Director
David 0. Russell takes on armpit-licking,
psychedelic drugs and Jewish mothers.
Ben Stiller drags wife Patricia Arquette,
their nameless newborn (I think they fi
nally settled on Garcia) and adoption
agency worker Tea Leoni around to search
for his biolooical oarents — altooether
quite a wild trip. (Beechwood)
Fritz the Cat (X) From out of the twisted
mind of R. Crumb (for further weirdness
see the excellent documentary of his ar
tistic and family life R. Crumb) comes the
tale of many animals being rampantly
sexual and crude. Disney it ain't. (Unless
you buy all those stories from religious
right newsletters about hidden frames in
The Little Mermaid.) (Georgia Theatre)
Janies and the Giant Peach (PG) A
"PG‘ Disney movie! Probably because the
story (by Roald Dahl of Charlie & the
Chocolate Factory) starts out with James’
parents gettingeatenbyarhinoceros. Forced
to live with some ghoulish aunts, James even-
tually meets some life-size insects (the voices
of Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon,
among others) who help James escape by
navigating the big peach to a new life in the
Big Apple. Live action and stop-action ani
mation, very Nightmare Before Christmas-y,
as you might expect from director Henry
Selick. (Mall Inside)
Jumanji (G) A two-hour conspiracy to
sell a board game. (Alps)
La Femme Nikita (R) The first ever
French film to be a midnight movie at the
Tate, and no one deserves it more than
Jeanne Moreau. (Tate)
Les Miserables (R) This just must be
the quarter for French films about WWII
'cause hereS yet another. Inspired by that big
huge novel by Victor Hugo that I've been try
ing to read since 1991(and eventually just
saw the musical instead), it carries similar
themes: tenderness, hope and transcendence
in the midst of oppression and destruction
(but alas no rotating stage). In French with
English subtitles. (Tate)
Magnificent Seven (Not Rated) The 1960
epicAmencan Western version of TheSeven
Samurai. Good and evil, honor and coward
ice, plus some other opposites. (Tate)
Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears
(Not Rated) FREE film! The second film in
the Central/Eastem Europe Film series.
From 1980, the year when America didn’t
believe in the Olympics, here's a Russian
romantic comedy. (Tate)

Mrs. Winterbourne (PG-13) You love
her in the afternoon; now Ricki Lake is all
that on the big screen. In a case of mis
taken identity that could only happen as a
plot device, a pregnant lower-class Ricki
gets welcomed into a wealthy family. With
Shirley MacLaine as the shrill matriarch
and Brendan Fraser as the fated love in
terest. (Beechwood)
Primal Fear (R) A legal suspense thriller-
type thing with Richard Gere as a hotshot
defense lawyer in a bizarre murder trial. Riled
with flashy but predictable courtroom scenes
and ends with a twist thiat will give you night
mares. (Mall Inside)
The Quest (PG-13) Jean-Claude Van
Dammed directorial debut! Run right out.
(Beechwood)
Secret of Roan Inisti (PG) Not to say
adult fantasy, because that conjures other
images, but sort of a magical tale not ex
actly for children. (Tale)
Sergeant Bilko (PG) Funny men Steve
Martin, Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman
team up in a comedy about the Army,
which will neither confirm nor deny the
existence of the movie. (Beechwood)
The Substitute (R) The anti-Mr.
Holland$ 0pus.(Beechwood)
Thin Line Between Love and Hate
(R) Sort of the flip-side of Waiting to Ex
hale. Playboy Martin Lawrence lusts after
beautiful Lynn Whitfield who transforms
into a obsessed stalker when he tries to
break it oft. (Beechwood)
The Truth About Cats and Dogs (PG-
13) A sort of updated gender-reversed ra-
dio-instead-of-love-letters Cyrano
deBergerac story. Hate to ruin it for you,
but the right girl wins. (Mall Outside)
Up Close and Personal (PG-13)
Michelle Pfeiffer plays an aspiring young
journalist with ambition but no direction.
Enter ever-the-ladies-man Robert Redford
who grooms her for The networks" and
pushes her upward while his own career
freefalls. This movie doesn't necessarily
have much new to offer us, but it is a slick,
calculated and well-made love story, if you
like that sort of thing. (Mall Outside)

NLINE!
You would think that ifapersonendedahead-
line with an exclamation point, she might be
introducing something very cool and excit
ing. Well, whatever your feelings about the
information stuporhighway (OK, no more
media buzzword puns, I promise) you can
easily waste the two hours in which you could
haw seen a movie by suiting the available
movie sites. If you consider this a preferable
alternative, check out:
The winner for content: If you happen to
have a running bet with your roommate
about who was the 2nd Second Assistant
for The Bridges of Madison County, then
this is the website for you: The Internet
Movie Database (http://www.mss
tate.edu/Movies) It's the ultimate re
pository of all obscure information about
every movie imaginable (65,751 at last
count) and you can search by actors, cin
ematographers, titles, even brief descriptions
like "that guy with his leg cut off in Fonest
Gump." Look for the "crazy credits" section
where you can see things you miss ewiy time
you leave the theater early, like "Worst Boy:
Adolf Hitler from Naked Gun 21/2 (prob
ably the funniest joke of that movie, not that I
would ever admit to seeing it...)
The winner for presentation: The Movie
Mania Page (httpVAuww.movievan.co
m/) Chock full of creativity. If you're viewing
with Netscape Navigator or Microsoft's
Internet Explorer (and why wouldnt you be?)
you get a moving picture tour of their fun fea
tures like "motion picture of the month"
and “what’s new on video." You can even
vote for your favorite video and send in
your own movie reviews. And while you're
writing movie reviews for the Internet any
way, send a few on down to Flagpole (where
we're looking for a new Movie Dope) along
with any other writing samples, to Pete
McCommons, Editor, Ragpole, P 0. Box

personal visits, please.
