Marlee Maclead plays the High Hat on Wednesday, April 24.
Prozak (40 Watt) Hardcore metal with
dope hip-hop beats. They'll also occa
sionally break into a jazzy interlude, but
metal-meets-rap is what Prozak does
best. Listen closely to “The Vandiver
’ Man" on Prozak's new CD, Daily Dose.
That unearthly scream in the background
is none other than Mr. David Barbe. Af
termath opens, so get there early.
Quinquo Quintet (High Ha!) Jazz. Play
ing happy hour: 6 p.m.
Redneck GReece (Atomic Music Hall)
Dirt roads and honky tonks. The Conti
nentals open. Midnight.
Nathan Sheppard Band (Georgia The
atre) Acoustic folk rock along the lines
of Neil Young or Van Morrison.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock cov
ers and originals.
Vineland (The Landfill) This NY-based
band features ex-Bitch Magnet main man
Jon Fine and ex-Martians drummer Jerry
Fuchs. I think they just recorded with Se
nior Albini, and tonight they’re playing
with Freemasonry and Ell Power. Call
208-8823 for info.
SATURDAY,
APRIL 27
Brides of Jesus (Roadhouse) Old-
school funk, soul and groove-ready New
Orleans boogie. I’ll bet they're still giddy
about opening for lunk legends The
Meters (who smoked, by the way).
Bulletproof (East Athens Community
Center) This is part of tne 1996 Athens
Jazz Series. The show is FREE, and the
Community Center is located at 400
McKinley Drive. Call G13-3620 for more
info. 6:30 p.m.
Stoney brooks & Juju Root (High
Hat) A smokin’ harmonica, some blues,
some soul and some dancing shoes.
Day By the River (Hall Moon Pub)
Groove-oriented original rock. I expect
this show will be a little more stripped-
down than DBfl’s Georgia Theatre shows,
which could be cool.
Ghostmeat Presents: (High Hat) An
other swell installment of the Saturday
Afternoons at the High Hal series. This
is a FREE AFTERNOON SHOW, running
from 4-7 p.m., and featuring the soft pop
of Atlanta's Gentle Readers (featuring
producer Don McCollister), and
Patterson Hood 4 the Drlveby
Truckers.
Hayride (Atomic Music Hall) I expect
they'll head into the studio later this year
to record the loilow-up to Ellin Magicloi
Capricorn Records, but in the meantime,
Hayride is touring a bit with CORE
Records' Podunk. Midnight.
Akbar Imhotep (East Athens Commu
nity Center) Imhotep and his band
present the musical puppet show “The
Jazzmen Meet the Rappers." This is part
of the 1996 Athens Jazz Series. The show
is FREE, and the Community Center is
located at 400 McKinley Drive. Call 613-
3620 for more info. The show starts at 5
p.m.
Mondo Topless (40 Watt) Garage rock
from Philadelphia. They have a single out
on Atlanta's Worrybird Records, and are
playing tonight with The Woggles and
The Penetrators.
The Penetrators (40 Watt) Instrumen
tal surf rock from Tuscaloosa, Ala. They
have some singles out on Solomente
Records, and appeared on a Dick Dale
tribute 10-inch record with The Woggles.
Tonight they’re playing with Mondo Top
less and The Woggles.
Podunk (Atomic Music Hall) Punk rock
on the Core label. They've been doing a
good bit of touring with Hayride lately, and
open for Nick & da boys tonight. 11 p.m.
Rachel & Andy (DTs Down Under)
Alternately sweet and searing covers and
originals.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock cov
ers and originals.
The Woggles (40 Watt) Manfred Jones
was not quite recovered from a long
■weekend of recording in North Carolina
when I called to get the latest Woggles
dope. The band spent the weekend re
cording Gel Tough, their first full-
length after leaving Estrus Records for
New Jersey's Telstar Records. Hillbilly
Frankenstein/Guadalcanai Diary gui
tar maestro Jeff Walls produced the
sessions. Expect a late September or
October release. Tonight they play with
Mondo Topless (which is a swell band
name if I ever heard one), and, urn,
The Penetrators.
SUNDAY,
APRIL 28
DAYTRIP FESTIVAL (Red House Me
dia) This is a festival put together by
Red House Media, a new multimedia
company in Athens. The company pro
grams web pages and does a lot more,
and this is a benefit for Community
Connection (and to offset the costs of
the free web page Red House main
tains for Community Connection). The
bands playing are In Like Flynn,
Brides of Jesus. Day By the River.
Phat Phlve and Athens Grass. Ad
vance tickets are available at Big Shot,
or call 549-04 74 for credit card orders
(and further info). Coolers are wel
come, but glass is not. To get to the
Red House compound, take North Av
enue to the bypass. Go 3.5 miles north
on Danielsville Road to 2895
Danielsville Rd. (Red House is on the
left — it really is a red house).
Carpooling is recommended. The
show will run from noon until dark.
MONDAY,
APRIL 29
Randy Anderson Sextet (City Bar)
Traditional jazz standards.
Bloodloss (40 Watt) This is Mark Arm
(from Mudhoney) with members of Lu
bricated Goat. It’s not Arm's brainchild,
though, and it's not The Monkeywrench,
Part 2, either. The latest Bloodloss record,
Live My Way, is a weird excursion more
into Tom Waits territory than blues or
Mudhoney's superfuzz bigrock. See ar
ticle on Page 23. Jucifer opens.
Dayroom (High Hat) Those wacky boys
will be entering the studio in the next
month or so to begin work on that terri
fying prospect: Album Number Two, with
The Gentle Readers' Don McCollister at
the helm. This is their first High Hat show.
Love the Wookie.
Jucifer (40 Watt) Jucifer plays brutally
beautiful music something like Harvey
Milk playing a song by Julee Cruise. It's
great.
King Daddy Zeb (DTs Down Under)
Former and current members of In Like
Flynn playing New Orleans jazz and blues
on the Southern Rock tip.
Mecca Normal (Atomic Music Hall) As
Betsy Weitzman says, Jean Smith "twists
the shape of words into scrap metal and
the guitars and synthesizers tie up white
noise into bows of barbed wire.” The
band (as well as its spinoff 2 Fool Flame)
is on Matador Records. Spackle opens.
12:30 a.m.
Old Toby (Flanagan^) Covers and originals.
Spackle (Atomic Music Hall) Like
sands in the hourglass, so are the days
Spackle will remain in Athens. The band
is moving back to Blacksburg, W.Va., this
summer, so catch 'em while you can!
Opening for Matador Records' Mecca
Normal. 11:30 p.m.
2 Foot Flame (Atomic Music Hall) An off
shoot (and oddly enough, labelmate) of
MeccaNormal SeearticleonPage25.10:30
p.m. Spackle plays the middle spot.
TUESDAY,
APRIL 30
The Fountains (High Hat) The Hot
Burritos also play, which will make for
one incredible evening of music.
Gryphon (Atomic Music Hail) Tight,
strong hook-oriented rock. I have no idea
how to categorize these guys (which is
probably a good thing), but they know
what they're doing, and darn well how to
do it. It's obvious they have a background
in groove-related stuff (plus some 311-
type poppy soulful reggae), but there's a
power and a maturity to Gryphon's
songwriting that takes thtm two steps for
ward. They've only played on a stage
once before, but they played that show
like seasoned veterans, and I have no
doubt that Jimmy Young's powerful voice
will take them places. Opening for Tone
Deaf Radio and The Quiet Men.
Hot Burritos (High Hat) Rock, country,
folk, whatever. They have a new cassette,
and it's sickeningly good at all of the
above. The Fountains also play
Neal Pattman (Flanagan's) Unplugged,
it's a living room jam of sods. Bring your
bluesiest shoes.
The Quiet Men (Atomic Music Hall)
Psychedelic pop. 12:30 a.m.
Tommy Gunn (DTs Down Under) Vari
ous members of The Shadowcaste and
The Sessions doing acoustic covers and
originals along the lines of Dylan, the
Stones and The Dead.
Tone Deaf Radio (Atomic Music Hall)
The band has recently added l-80pi's
Bayon Forie on guitar. Fode is still do
ing his own thing in l-80pi (and make
sure to check out their single if you
haven't already), but now he's contribut
ing to Tone Deaf Radio to create a
“warmer, fuller" sound. TOR plays some
traditional Celtic and Italian songs, as
well as a bunch of unique originate in
the same vein as Midnight Oil and/or Syd
Barrett. Check 'em out. 11:30 p.m
