Bloodloss formed in Sydney, Australia, in
1983. Renestair EJ formed the band and Mar
tin Bland became his drummer. Bloodloss only
lasted for one year.
They formed once again in 1987, lasting
two years, and recorded two albums, which
went nowhere fast.
In 1989, Stu Spasm of Lubri
cated Goat called upon Ren and
Martin to help with a tour. The
next two years featured extensive
tours to parts mainly unknown.
Ren and Martin got to know Guy
Maddison, Lubricated Goat’s
bassist, and a friendship was
formed.
Things too strange to explain
here occurred, and Martin moved
to Seattle in 1991 to help Mark Arm (of
Mudhoney) with his Monkeywrench blues
project for Sub Pop Records. Ren himself soon
moved to Seattle and it wasn’t long until Guy
showed up and the enigma known as Bloodloss
came into being once again. They released two
albums on Sympathy For The Record Industry,
one of which was a stage-production musical.
With the lineup solidified, for the moment,
Bloodloss entered the studio, coughing up Live
My Way .which slaps the face of just about
everybody and everything under
the sun.
Definitely eccentric,
Bloodloss has emerged from
some fractured time warp hail
ing a new direction of oddity and
unconventionality. All attempt at
a worthwhile description is fu
tile. Bloodloss gives a new
meaning to “experience,” which
could translate into “Where were
you when your laxative started working?” You
will be the judge: damnation or salvation?

MICHAEL:
Po£en£iaUy Wide. Awake
A couple months ago Michael, the band, was a hot topic around the Flagpole offices. All talent aside, there
was another reason for the attention. It seems that a Michael concert (Iyer had appeared in the window of a
Flagpole newspaper box. For all you “poster children" out there, this is strictly VER-BO-TEN (and will continue
to be, under penalty of death or much, much worse). Once this was explained to Michael, it seemed that all was
well until, almost comically, it happened again. The boys protested that this was through no fault of their own,
and well, they’ve got such honest faces. So far be it from us to deny Michael the attention they deserve. Besides,
they mention our swell magazine on the jacket of their newly-pressed 45.
With a new 7-inch single in their tight little mitts, Michael is getting ready to test the indie/college market
of the Southeast. But first, the band has a show at the 40 Watt to celebrate the release. Though the 7-inch is
mainly meant for radio stations, the band will be giving away copies at the show, at least until they run out. And
you will want a copy, even if you nave to borrow your friend’s dusty ol' turntable. If that's not reason enough to
go to the show, it's likely to feature three bands, so fashionably late may well be too late.
The single features two songs, “Wide Awake" and “Potential,” both of which appeared on Michael's original
demo. The record is truly a D.I.Y. effort. Though the band had the record pressed in Nashville, they copied the
sieeve and the label at a local copy shop and put the package together themselves. Even the artwork was done
by a long-time friend, Atlanta graphic artist Anthony Baker. Bob Sleppy, Michael's drummer, was impressed by
Baker’s work in a comic/novella he saw entitled Flowers, and asked him to contribute the cover artwork. Baker,
after listening to some of Michael's material then came up with the front cover, which you are invited to see for
yourself. No information on the link between the music and the “French kiss" cover was forthcoming, although
the back cover art appeared in the aforementioned comic.
Once you get the 45 and listen to it, you may notice the difference from the live show (where you were
fortunate enough to pick up the single). As David Fairbairn says, “We're a little bit tighter and we play the song
a little bit differently now — I think probably twice as fast." The speed has not wiped out the other elements of
the songs, which have quickly grabbed the attention ot nearly everyone I have talked to It looks like Michael
may soon be the next quality Athens band that is ready lor export: and when you see them, tell them to RECORD
