On windy warm days, I watch in
amazement as cars circle the block
for what seems an eternity, trying to
find a spot up close. What is it that
urges them closer 7 Fear of the at
mosphere? Creasing a new pair of
shoes 7 Walking? In response I have
begun crossing Clayton by weaving
in and out of tne parked cars just to
watch the circlers slow down in the
hope that one of them is mine:
quickly turning off their turn signals
as I cross the street.
I have too much time on my hands.
This, although hard to believe, gets old after a bit (once), and I head over to get some
take out food. Hearing the familiar screen door slam, I place my order at the counter.
I always make a mental note to try something new. but somehow manage to order the
same thing. Maybe my sense of adventure is dulled by the interior or the flashback of the
tiny whole deep-fried-squid pulled from an order of calamari. Nevertheless, my mind goes
blank after habitually viewing the menu. Unable to deviate from the usual. I state my order
like a programmed robot, give my name and wait.
After the first few seconds, the wait becomes unbearable. I notice the water-stained
ceiling and the pitchers sweating along the ba^counter, ready to be emptied. I hear con
versations of the waitstaff, trying to appear that i ■ 'hinking of something important (world
peace, etc.), not eavesdropping.
I take inventory of my fingernails, check my watch, but most interesting is the r an in the
glass booth in the far wall. I keep expecting him to take requests or show a movie.
Finally my name is called. Carrying the greasy brown paper bag outside, I wonder if I
should fool a few more drivers. Then, I remember the sentinel at the NationsBank parking lot

TRY DALLAS^
Local gadabout Dallas has agreed to answer our readers' ques
tions about life, love, money, etc. — you know, kind of like the
Psychic Friends Network, except he's not psychic, and he's prob
ably not really your friend. Send questions to Try Dallas,

Dear Dallas: What is my chance of winning the Georgia Lot
tery? Is it even worth a dollar a day?-Dreaming of Green
■■■■ Dear Dreaming: It's no secret that you may as well be flush
ing your dollar down the crapper. It's been said that one stands a
better chance of being hit by lightning than of winning the lottery.
Of course, there are things that you can do to skew the chances of
either one happening. To increase your chances of being hit by a
thunderbolt, stand in an open field during an electrical storm
holding a metal bar over your head. To increase your chances of
winning the lottery, stand in line at Golden Pantry with a bunch of
other impoverished, delusional sad sacks. It’s not all bad news,
though. A certain percentage of money taken in by the Georgia
Lottery goes to fund our public schools. With the extra funding, it
shouldn't be long before graduating Georgia high school seniors are
able to grasp the concept of double-digit numbers, which greatly
increases their chances at Powerball.-Dallas
