JULY 24
David Barbe (High Hat) His solo
shows are at least as noisy as most
Buzz Hungry shows were, and you
can probably expect him to do a
heap of Buzz Hungry material, as
well as newer (and older) stuff.
Cool.
Brian Burke & No Tollin'
(Allens) There's no tellin' who this
Normaltown Flyer will be playing
with tonight
Catfish Jenkins (Georgia The
atre) It's not often that a good
songwriter can find a good enough
band to do those songs justice but
Catfish Jenkins has both. They play
powerful rock'n'roll that would fit just
fine on 99X or 96 Rock, but it’s not
just empty-headed alternarock
There's heart here, and sometimes
that's all that matters Playing with
Jupiter Coyote.
Vic Chesnutt (40 Watt) Vic is
one fantastic songwriter. Advance
word on his new record for Capi
tol is very strong, and his niece,
the mesmerizing Liz Durette. will
open this show.
Don Conoscenti (Classic Cen
ter Theater) Opening for David
Wilcox.
Uz Durette (40 Wati) She's a rela
tive of Vic Chesnutt. and she is
about as close to a truly “angelic"
vocalist as I think I’ve ever seen.
When I last saw her, she just pla, ad
quietlv on an acoustic guitar, lettin 3
her voice silence the room with its
beauty. She's great Get there early.
Funkomatic (Garden Stage)
They’re funky, they're zany, and
they'll be sweatin with the oldies
from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Guadalajara (Garden Stage)
Latin and Brazilian jazz from the
University's finest. From noon until
3 p.m.
Hazel Virtue (Atomic Music Hal!)
Hook-laden poppy alternative. Can
these guys continue to write songs
as infectious as “My Spanish
Puppetfinger." though? Yeah, prob
ably. They're driven.
Jupiter Coyote (Georgia The
atre) Their latest Autonomous
Records release was called Lucky
Day and came out last year. Tonight
they’re playing with Catfish Jenkins
Knocked Down Smilin’
(Atomic Music Hall) Opening for
Hazel Virtue.
The Lighthouse Gospelettes
(Georgia Center for Continuing
Education) This is a local family of
musicians who perform gospel
music ‘with excitement, emotion
and expression... the authentic
style of this great American musi
cal tradition." Two shows: 4:45 and
715 p.m both are held in the
main lobby.
Olympic Gospel Explosion!
(Morton Theatre) Gospel, featuring
Sylvanus Turner with Voices Ore
and Chauncer Turner 7:30 p.m.
Call 613-3771 for info.
The Palletjacks (High Hat)
Twangy pop songs that walk the
line between rock and very loud
country. Playing with David Barbe.
See article on Page 27.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock
covers and originals.
Thumb (Garden Stage) Fast-
paced pop-punk from Brian Cook
(Time Toy) and company. They
have a song on both the Five Ring
Circus and Release the Monkeys
CDs 9:30 p.m.
Tommy Gunn (DTs Down Under)
Dylan, Stones and Dead covers.
Plus more.
Underwaterfall (City Bar)
Groove rock
David Wilcox (Classic Center
Theater) Wilcox is an acclaimed
singer/songwriter (and famed gui
tarist). I personally know several
acoustic guitarists who think Wilcox
is the bee's knees. Don Conoscenti
opens. 9 p.m.
THURSDAY,
JULY 25
Alien Child (Buzzard's Roost)
Rock covers and originals. To
night, they'll be preceded by The
Golden Power Twins, from Berlin,
Germany. The Power Twins are
acrobats, contortionists, show
men. and identical twins. They do
a show involving all that plus
poodles! The folks at the 3uzzard's
Roost got a sneak peak at this
show last week and say it's just
amazing. 10 p.m.
The Bacups (City Bar) Acoustic
classics with an emphasis an vo
cal harniomes. From 8-11p
Bloodkin (High Hat) They’re
prepping for their big CD release
party in September, but you can
still check out the>r dark Southern
songs and pester them about the
new CD. Also, Todd Nance of
Widespread Panic will be playing
drums for Bloodkin tonight.
The Fountains (Allen's) Great,
house-shaking folk-rock, country
and straight-up rock'n'roll.
The Gravel Pit (40 Watt) Their
record is called The Gravel Pit
Manifesto. They're playing with
Superdrag and Nada Surf.
Hall of Fame (Atomic Music
Hall) Driving post-punk noise
They're a great band, and they're
carving out their own niche. Play
ing with Skinner Pilot See article
on Page 25.
Kingfish (Garden Stage) Blues
from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
The Martians (Garden Stage)
Amazing, abrasive post-punk for
the next generation. They have a
lot of new recordings in the can
(and I'm told their new stuff is phe
nomenal), and there should be a
new Martians record (from record
ings by David Barbe) in late Sep-
tember/ear'y October They will
also embark on a week-long tour
with June of 44 (yes!) soon, and
they're playing tonight at 9:30 p.m.
Men of Accord Barbershop
Quartet (Georgia Center for Con
tinuing Education) At the end ot
the 19th Century, close-harmony
singing had become a popular
recreational activity and expres
sive form of fellowship. Barber
shops were important social cen
ters: places for waiting, talking and
visiting. The Men of Accord are
Athens businessmen keeping that
spirit alive. Two shows: 4:45 and
7:15 p.m.. in the main lobby.
Nada Surf (40 Watt) Their song
“Popular" answers the age-old
question of what a cartoon version
of Weezei might sound like —
pretty good, actually.
New Birth Singers (Morton
Theatre) Gospel at 7:30 p.m. Call
613-3771 for info.
Planet Jive/S.O.L. (Garden
Stage) They label themselves “ex
otic rock'n'roll with a serious bite."
They’re playing from noon-3 p.m.
Sandfly (DT's Down Under) A
unique blend of folk, country
and blues, straight from the low
country.
Nathan Sheppard Band
(Georgia Theatre) Sheppard has
been playing around Athens and
winning over crowds here for
years. He has two CDs, Wander
ing, and Half Life, under his belt,
and there are more on the way.
Tonight he'll start about 10:30 p.m.
Singers of Drepung Loseling
Monastery (UGA’s Hugh
Hodgson Hall) These famed
multiphonic singers have per
formed with Paul Simon, Edie
Brickell, Natalie Merchant, Kitaro
and the Grateful Dead's Mickey
Hart. Tonight they'll be performing
“Sacred Music, Sacred Dance for
World Healing “ The monks will
demonstrate their multiphonic
abilities, in which each monk si
multaneously sings th r ee notes of
a chord. They'll also play 10-foot
dunchen horns, drums, bells, cym
bals, and gyaling horns. For infp,
call 542-4400.
Skinner Pilot (Atomic Music
Hall) This duo used to live here
(and hosted a show with Ruby
Falls at the Skinner Pilot home
stead), and they're back for this
show (and another at the Landfill
on Friday) only. Playing with Hall
of Fame. Check it out.
Squat (Georgia Theatre) Jazz
standards and originals. Midnight.
Superdrag (40 Watt) Their new
record, Regretfully Yours, doesn’t
quite live up to the potential that the
single “Sucked Out" showed, but
it's a decent record nonetheless
They’re touring with Nada Surf and
The Gravel Pit.
