Am I the only person that

CENTERING AROUND KEMP
(WHILE INCLUDING MURPHY &
VIC): Local songwriter Kemp
Jones recently rang me up be
tween catering gigs to let me know
about his inclusion in the finals of
Musician Magazine's Best Un
signed Band contest. No less than
four of our esteemed local artists have shown
up in this listing: the Michael Guthrie Band,
Where's Anita?, Hazel Virtue and Mr. Jones.
Kemp, who is within spitting distance of com
pleting his own 'at-home' recording project
(with the able and generous use of Michael
Guthrie's 8-track) will also perform at the Morton
Theatre along with Vic Varney and Elliot
Murphy Aug 13. Unless you've been under a
rock in the past few years, you're probably fa
miliar with Varney's work, but you need to hang
around at this particular show for Elliot Murphy,
who was lumped in with folks like Steve
Forbert, Loudon Wainwright and
Springsteen as being one of the 'New Dylans"
back in the '70s (meaning that after Springsteen
— deservedly — achieved widespread acclaim,
none of these other guys could get arrested),
nd who has a brand spanking new album cn
the Texas-based Dejadisc label So to reiterate,
Murphy, Varney and Jones will be performing at
the Morion Aug. 13, showtime is expected to be
8-11 p.m. v so you can stili get up in the morning
and be productive), and tickets are S 5 at Wuxtry
and Big Shot. There, see how simple that was?
SCRAPING SASHA OFF THE WHEEL: Out
of the ashes of projects iike Low L'.e, Bo ►•by
Vietnam, iieeq Nutra, the Groir. '.uneers,
Medaglia D'Oro, Gtenn Lizzy, etc., comes
what is described by member Dru Wilbur as
'aggressive ambience, new lite pornographic
soundtracks.' You'll probably know it only as
Go>den Sasha, the latest experimental noise
project featuring John Driscoll, Wilbur and
Omar Khalid, which, well, to me kinda sounds
Lice John Zorn doing an interpretation of Metal
Mad: ne Music, but... not. Anyway, they're re
leasing a limited edition cassette called Trans
missions From The Bunker which comes pack
aged in a cool mysteriously etched foil pack
age. The cassette is probably best ingested af
ter ingesting something else, so !'ll leave all of
you to your own devices with this one. You have
been warned.

Possibilities The Possibilities were one of the
first bands to play the Saturday afternoon
shows, and also show up on the latest
Ghostmeat comp Release The Monkeys (as
well as the latest Treble Revolution compila
tion). and if you haven't already picked up
their cassette Loser Stew, well, maybe you
should For info on Ithica Gin I would refer
you to last week's Flagpole (you know, the
one tha* is now lining your litter box — just
wipe it off and look for this column), or I could
just tell you that this will be one of those
shows that you will long remember for one
thing: good songs I could use a lot of that
same old 'Americana' crap to describe
what's going on with Ithica Gin and their new
album Alembic, but that's just selling those
guys extremely short Don't miss this. For fur
ther info on booking these Ghostmeat shows,
please call your local representative at 549-

away, don't worry — he's a very busy young
man. Thank you and goodnight.

BELL COMP: Part One (i. leaning there's a-gonna
be another) of the Release The Monkeys: 23
Bands from Athens & Atlanta release parties is
Aug. 8 at the fabulous 40 Watt, featuring the
melodious, wholesome sounds of Blake
Guthrie, Poolside. Drip and Gick (all of whom
have fine entries on the album). Entrance into
the club is a mere $4. Copies of the compilation
will be on hand at extra low prices. Jeepers, this
should be a real hoot.
PANIC Courtesy of the fine folks at Moon
Times (you know, the, urn, official propaganda
tool of Widespread Panic), word is that the
band is, as you read this, prepanng to enter John
Keane's Studio to record their fifth album for
Capricorn, which is as of this writing untitled.
The band has 15 new originals plus a passal of
new cover tunes that have shown up in recent
live shows, and the entire project will be pro
duced by John Keane and mixed by Keane
along with Cliff Norrell (the same guys who
worked on Ain't Life Grand). No other long term
plans in the Panic camp, although you can ex
pect them to kick off their next tour sometime
in October.
That's Yer Goody for the week of 8-7-%.
