effecis-laden pop. They had taken
a break over the summer as at
least one band member went over
seas, but now they're back in full
swing and should have a new
demo ready soon.
The Qu'et Men (Atomic Music
Hall) Intelligent, psychedelic pop
fiom Athens (by way ol the London
sound) Playing with May. See
story on Page 22
Space Voyage Ahem (Wash
ington Street Tavern) Rock f.om
the cosmos. They're now a power
trio, by the way, and hope to start
work on some new recordings
soon. 10:30 p.m.
Squat (Georgia Theatre) Smooth
jazz.
String Cheese Incident (Geor
gia Theatre) From Colorado, and
opening for Squat Thankfully,
they're nothing like ‘The Spaghetti
Incident," because that just wasn't
pretty.
Friday,
November 8
The Bacups (Allen's) Acoustic
classics with an emphasis on vo
cal harmonies. 8 p.m.
Donkey (40 Watt) The lounge liz
ards have become more straight
forward rockers, but they still bring
you a message of love.
EROK (High Hat) EROK is a blues
band that combines some smokin'
guitar work with Eric Culberson's
soulful vocals and his powerful
songwriting chops. The band will
be entering the studio this month
to record another record for King
Snake records out of Florida Their
debut, Blues is My Religion, con
tinues to be a hot little item.
The Hill (DT's Down Under)
They're kinda bluesy-jazzy, have a
violin player, and play a bunch of
originals plus the oc asional song
Widespread Panic or Buffalo
Springfield.
Mel & the Party Hats (Geor
gia Theatre) Alternative and rock
covers.
Mudflap Tammy (Atomic Music
Hall) This Dand played at the Daily
Groceries Block Party recently, but
this is their first time playing on a
real stage. One band member
(Laura) won the Go-Go comest at
this year's Sleazefest, and another
member (Ginger) was crowned
Queen of Sleaze. Hold me. Play
ing with The Woggles.
Quin Quo Quartet (Georgia
Bar) Jazz from 6-9 p.m.
The Simpletons (Lowery's)
Rock covers and originals.
The Woggles (Atomic Music
Hall) They've been rocking the
planet since Montague re-joined
the band, and should have a
swanktaculous new record at the
turn of the new year.

November 9
Big Fish Ensemble (High Hat)
Aside from being in a fine outfit of
their own, half of BFE will be help
ing Anne Richmond Boston open
tiie show tonight. No word on a
new BFE record, but congrats to
Michael Lorant and Sheila Doyle
on their recent marriage. You guys
rule 1
Anne Richmond Boston (High
Hat) She'll be joined tonight by
Rob Gal (of Snack & Shack stu
dios, on guitar & vocals), Matthew
Sanborn (of Tongue & Groove
Pines on guitar, bass & vocals),
Michael Wegner (of Los Fuzzy
Sprouts, on piano, guitar, bass,
clarinet, vocals and possibly har
monica), plus Michael Lorant and
Sheila Doyle of Big Fish Ensemble.
Randall Bramblett Band
(Morton Theatre) Bramblett is an
Athens legend from his work
alongside the Allman Bros., Steve
Winwood, Sea Level ano Traffic,
but he's a fine songwriter in his
own right, as some adva~ce tracks
from his upcoming (still untitled)
CD clearly show His songs fall into
the same territory as artists like
Sting and Peter Gabriel (thoug'h
more rootsy), and mere could be
some big things happening 1or this
band in the near future. 9 p.m.
Crash Fire Club (Galaxy £03)
Sort of New Order-type keyboard-
driver pop Playing with the like-
minded Girl Pool and Atlanta's
Path of Allyson.
The Girl Pool (Galaxy 500) Elec
tronic music for the next wave.
Their new demo is called Forever
Seventeen, and tonight they're
playing with Crash Fire Club and
Path of Allyson
Hall of Fame (Atomic Music
Hall) Lately, only the guitar work
in Unwound has impressed me as
much as Jeff Matthews' off-kilter
guitar skronkings in Hall of Fame.
Their new 8-song demo is out and
ready to eat your stereo alive.
Jucifer (Atomic Music Hall) Man,
give 'em a buzz clip and they'd be
a household word Jucifer takes
the best elements of 70s metal
and '90s ambient music, puts them
in some sort of song structure, and
then reinvents the whole damn
thing. They're great.
Kudzu Jones (DT's Down Under)
They've packed DT’s in the past.
Will they do it again? It’s up to you.
Lords of the Ring (40 Watt) This
is the second time the 40 Watt has
hosted this Rock 'n' Wrestling
bash, and if the first one was any
indication, Lords of the Ring 2 will
be a smash — literally. I can t re
member a time when I had as
much fun at a rock show as i did
for the first Lords of the Ring. This
time out, rock bands SciFu, Mon
sters of Metal (who are not to
be missed) and Hayride will rock
the joint in between bouts of fleshy
mayhem courtesy of pro wrestlers
Mad Max, Big Ron Studd (7'4‘ and
425 pounds!), the Bounty Hunter.
Big Sexy (my personal fave), and
ten more wrestlers. Be there or
some rather large gentlemen will
show up at your doorstep Sunday
morning with a large polo mallet.
Path of Allyson (Galaxy 500)
Electronic pop something like Iggy
Pop or Peter Murphy playing with
a kinder, gentler Nine Inch Nails.
The Simpletons (Lowery's)
Rock covers and originals.
Monday,
November 11
Cracker (40 Watt) Their new
record, The Golden Age is the first
‘complete" Cracker record. The
first two records had their share of
great songs mixed with some less-
great stuff, but The Golden Age
seems fully-realized in a way that
the earlier records just weren’t.
Good 'or Mr. Lowery and company,
because I knew they had it in 'em.
‘Big Dipper' and "I Can't Forget
You" give me the chills. See inter
view on Page 20
King Daddy Zab (DT's Down Un
der) Piano-based New Orleans-
style boogie wcogie.
Michael (Atomic Music Hall)
They combine the playful disso
nance of indie rock with the big
themes brought about by Nirvana
and their ilk. Their newer stuff is
less easily defined, but it's pretty
cool.
Will Rehberg & Jim Garland
(Allen's) Outlaw country and more.
Self (40 Watt) Their debut record
is called Subliminal Plastic Mo
tives. and it's the sort of pop
record Trent Reznor might have
...ade if he had been born as
Siamese twins with Jonn Lennon
on one side and Beck on the other.
Opening for Cracker.
Shek Ala Shek (Atomic Music
Hall) This Chapel Hill trio is about
as daring and schizophrenic as
Atlanta's Bob, and would probably
get along famously with the afore
mentioned genius weirdoes
They've got a five song CD that
covers much territory — from Mag-
neto-esque high octane Sabbath/
Zeppelin rockers to more sub
dued, weirder stuff using guest
sax and trumpet players — and
despite the jarring shifts ir styles,
it all works. Their songs are like a
, sign pointing to some blurry object
in the distance: you're not sure
what the object is or if you want to
go there, but you go along anyway,
thanking yourself when you get to
a place much cooler than you had
anticipated in the first place.
Vic Verney (High Hat) He's got
an amazing new cassette called
Stars that he recorded with William
Tonks (Hot Burritos) and John Neft
(Star Room Boys). Jason Station
says it's ‘Super-A splendiferous."
Plus. I see him at pretty much ev
ery Vaudeville show, so the man's
obviously got taste.
Tuesday,
November is
Angry Johnny & the
Killbillies (Atomic Music Hall)
Cowpunk. They're not nearly as
scary as their name, album
(Hankenstein) or cover art would
have you believe. See article on
Page 23.
Big Slow Wreck (Atomic Music
Hall) Playing with Angry Johnny &
the Killbillies.
Mishap (DT's Down Unoer) (un
filled song-based groovy acoustic
rock'n'roll.
Say Zuzu (High Hat) Americana
from parts North Tony at the High
Hat booked them because he likes
'em. You might have heard the CD
playing in the High Hit and inquired
about it. They’re playing wth iellow
countryboys the Steam Donkeys.
Second Hand (Allen's) This is
the full-band project from singer/
songwriter Ralph Roddenberry.
His CD is called Fix Myself.
Nathan Sheppard (40 Watt)
Working-rr.an's folk rock.
Steam Donkeys (High Hat) The
shows these guys have become
legendary. The Steam Donkeys
play traditional country, roots rock
and cow punk, but they infuse it
with life the way few others can.
Check 'em out.
Stewart & Winfield (40 Watt)
A duel guitar team hell-bent on
swell harmonies and opening for
Nathan Sheppard.
