AHo Guthrie (40 Wall) His biggest hit
was the 16-minute ‘Alice's Restaurant’ in
1967 (it was the basis tor a movie two
years later), but Guthrie has been churn
ing out quality folk records on Repnse and
on his own Rising Son labei (which has
teen buying his records back from
Warner Bros ) ever since. Four years ago
the younger Guthrie released 20 Grow Big
Songs, an album ot children's songs writ
ten by his father Woody, but recorded by
Arto and his siblings. Tonight s show starts
at 8 p.m. sharp, and consists of two sets
(though everyone is tree to stay for both
sets)
TYey Boyer Band (DTs Down Under)
Uptempo alternative folk.
Brian Burice & Nc Tellin' (Allen's) The
Normaltowr, Flyer gets by with a little help
from his friends.
The Carlisles (Flanagan's) Pop with a
hint of ska. They've got a new six-song
cassette available now (with song titles
like "le Inspector.' ‘Barr.aby Jones
Theme’ and ’Celebrity Golf,’ no less), and
they just donT play around here very of
ten.
Charlie Mars Band 'High Ha!) Their
sound has been linked to bands like Big
Head Todd, Nei' Young and the Counting -
Crows Their new album (which came out
before Neil Young's Broken Arrow) is
called, ironically Broken Arrow See article
on Page 15
Dayroom (Georgia Theatre) Quirky pap-
lunk-caffane-mduced mayhem. Their new-
record is called Contagious
Glenmont Popes (Atomic Music Hal!)
Playing with Jack Black.
The Hill (City Bar) They’re kinda bluesy-
jazzy, have a vioiin player, and play a
bunch of originals plus some covers.
Jack Black (Atomic) Where drag-rac
ing and rock'n'roll meet punk rock in a
head-on collision They recorded their
debut CD live at CBGB's last year, and
they just plain rock. See article on Page
15.
Kudzu Jones (High Hat) Playing with
the Charlie Mars Band.
Loveapple (Georgia Theatre) Smart pop
rock with impressive vocalist Kitty Snyder
at the helm Opening for Dayroom.
MiCosa (Atnens Brewing Company) A
side-project for some local folks, includ
ing Bill luoso of the Brides of Jesus.
Thursday,
November 14
Action Slacks (High Hat) Playing with
the Dashboard Saviors.
Angie Aparo (Wishbone's) Singer/
songwriter stuff.
Cobweb Strange (40 Wat!) Intricate,
lyrical, progressive psycho-delia from At
lanta. They re influenced by King Crimson,
Gentle Giant, Rush. Pink Floyd and Ves.
Da shboard Saviors (High Hat) It almost
seems like these guys have been more ac
tive since they ’broke up' last year. Good
for them, and good fa us. Is that live al
bum available in the U.S. yet? Pester the
folks who should know about it.
The Healers (NoWhere Bar) Chicago-
and Texas-style blues
Left Front Tire (Atomic Music Hall)
Punk meets ska in Cornelia, Ga. Picture
that Green Day guy singing *or the
Bosstones and you're getting dose.
J. Mascis (University of Georgia) Indie
rockts main man '$ louring behind his new
solo album Walk the Dinosaur, Jr„ man.
Christie McCarthy (Washington Street
Tavern) She's an acoustic singer/
songwriter who just moved here from Ber
keley.
Phat Chicken (DTs Down Under) Psy
chedelic funk from Tucker, Ga. George
Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners (Gea-
gia Theatre) Porter is the multi-talented
bassist from The Funky Meters. He has
been working on a live Meters album in
addition to his own projeds. The Meters
are an incredible live band, and while
Runnin' Pardners is not exactly the same
thing. I'm betting this band rocks as well.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock cov
ers and originals.
Stewart & Winfield (Georgia Bar)
They're an acoustic duo hellbent on great
harmonies. 10 p.m.
Still (40 Watt) These guys were formerly
known as Echolyn (and were signed »o
Sony). Accading to their biggest fans (in
Volare). they feature ‘structured, textured
arrangements combining heavy, sym
phonic blues-rock with emotive hooks and
harmonies, plus flashes of the breakneck
complexities that made Echolyn the great
white hope of American prog rock.’
Awwww yeah. Playing with Wolar6 and
Cobweb Strange.
Volare (40 Watt) They're trying to em
phasize texture and contrast lately, and
they hope some of their new songs do just
that. "We aint just crazy wackos," the
band says They're hosting the Prog Rock
Olympics tonight with Philadelpnia's Still
(famerty Echolyn) and Atlanta's Cobweb
Strange.
Yahblo Canyon Band (Allen's) Acous
tic jams drawing from the guitar masters
of the '60s and '70s.

Gary Andrews (Allen's) Gary is one half
of The Fountains' writing team (and also
about two minutes older than his twin
brother/writing partner Jeffrey). He's been
boning up on his Woody Guthrie and Cat
Stevens songs (plus a boatload of his own
compositions), so look out world
The Birrs (Wishbone's) This is a new
biuegrass ensemble. See the article on
Page 16.
Captain Snack (Atomic Music Hall)
This is the logical extension of what The
Gomans might sound like with another
guitarist (a fuller sound) and a more de
finitive pop direction (urn, poppier).
They're too good to wait this long between
shows Playing with Poolside.
Five-Eight (40 Watt) One full year since
Five-Eight recaded its new album (then
it was called Comet, but now it's called
Gasolina). Velvel Records will finally re
lease it Feb. 18. And it's about time —
about everyone I know has worn out their
copies of Weirdo, and some nev- Five-
Eight material will be just the thing to keep
those winter blues away Put yer mouth
on the gasoline. The excellent \ferbena
opens.
Jump Little Children (Geagia The
atre) Lively acoustic — but not folk —
rock'n'roll. It's eclectic and unconven
tional, and J.L.C. fans have developed a
whole Rocky Horror-type routine amund
their songs (using hand gestures and a
type ot sign language). All reports are
raves.
Poolside (Atomic Music Hall) Now that
Herr Lesemarm is back from Deutschland,
Poolside can continue to conquer land
and sea with blistering guitar solos and a
newfound love for — of all things — the
pop song. Their fellow Gritmeisters Cap
tain Snack are also playing.
Popcycle (DTs Down Under) Formerly
Catfish Jenkins. They play song-oriented
power pop, and will be a fine opener for
Edwin McCain 'when he gets here. The
new name suits them much better than
the old one did.
Quin Quo Quintet (Geagia Bar) Jazz
from 6-9 p.m.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock cov
ers and originals.
Star Room Boys (High Hat) True-grit,
dirt road honky tonk. They should have a
new 7-inch single on Kindercae Recads
out any day now.
Verbena (40 Watt) Verbena played a slot
directly befae my band a! the 40 Watt
about two years ago and made us look
damn silly. They're bombastic and great
in much the same way Joe Christmas is
bombastic and great. I had heard DGC
was checking 'em out. but I'm glad to see
that Super chunk's label. Merge, signed
them — I think that's a much wiser move
for Verbena at this point. Their newest
record, Souls For Sale, will be released
April 1. Opening fa Five-Eight.
Saturday,
November 16
Joe Barnes (Georgia Bar) Music start
ing at 10 p.m.

needs is a guitar and a moment ot your
time. This man is a pro. See article on

Kudzu Jones (Geagia Theatre) Open
ing fa Derek Trucks.
The Rubber Experiment (Atomic
Music Hall) A heavier, weirder version of
what used to be Rubber Nubby, featuring
some current Volarfi members.
Spackle (Atomic Music Hall) Welcome
back! The Spackle ladies lived here fa
about a year and returned to their home
of Blacksburg, Va. Now they’ve got an
other brand-new drummer and are return
ing fa one show I, fa one, have missed
'em. Playing wiui The Rubber Experiment
Tibbetts Street (Wishbone^) Groove
rock and jazzy mountain funk — a six-
piece collage of styles.
Derek Thicks & the Derek Thicks
Band (Geagia Theatre) Trucks is a mem
ber o' the Allman Brothers family, and he
also happens to be a 16 year-old guitar
whiz. Kudzu Jones and the Kudzu Jones
Band opens.
Wortd Sod (D'ft Down Under) They play
a sort of heavy Doors-type thing, but they’ve
been laying low fa a while, so frings might
have changed. Expect the Ra/a CD to be
released in the coring weeks.
