Storm Tro«JaI, Ralph Roddenberry
and Nathan Sheppard.

Randy Andersen Sextet (City Bar)
Jazz.
Death's Little Sister (40 Wat!) Key
board-led goth pop and semi spoken-
word stuff. It's not your average fare and
that's a good thing.
Friends of Your Mother (Atomic Mu
sic Hall) What was that you said about my
mother?
The Girl Pool (40 Watt) New wave
gloom pop from some big boosters of
electronic music in this town. They're put
ting together shows in unique venues with
out-of-town bands on a regular basis now,
so more power to 'em. Their new cassette
is called Forever Seventeen
Mike Jones Quartet (Athens Brewing
Co.) This former Donkey sax player bnngs
his ,azz quartet to the Brewpub. No easy
listening jazz standards here; this is BOP
central. Check it out.
King Daddy Zeb (DTs Down Under)
New Orleans-style blues piano boogie
woogie.
ODK (40 Watt) Thai’s Order of the Dying
Knights to the uninformed (which included
me about 30 minutes ago) They're al
ready been pigeonholed into the Atlanta
goth scene, although their music isnt
nearly as dark, depressii ,g and downright
scary as you might expect given tha’ fact.
See the article on Page 16.
The Sinners (Allen's) This is a conglom
eration featixing multi-talented mutti-instm-
mentalist Aaron Parrett, who has a "solo’
CD called, of all things, The Sinners.

Big Back Forty (High Hat) Rock solid
Americana. They've got a swell EP that,
unfortunately, comes in one of those an
noying little paper envelopes instead of a
lewel box. Luckily, the band's songwriting
has nothing to do with that envelope. Play
ing with the V-Roys.
Blue tip (Atomic Music Han) This D.C.
band is part of the harsher side of
Dischord Records. They’ve got a guy from
Swiz in the band, and they're playing with
Galanas:Cerdd and Kerosene 454.
The Fountains (40 Watt) Fiery folk rock.
These gcys play like their lives depend
on ft, and reinvent the simplest of songs
in a way that's just incredible. Playing with
Garrison Starr.
GalanasrCerdd (Atomic Music Hall)
Freemasonry has evolved into
Galanas'Cerdd (pronounced “gull-ANNis
KAIRTH"). The trio has recently added
another guitarist (from the band Barren),
and we can expect a CD EP on
Moodswing Records (same label as Hell
Mach 4) soon
Herringbone (DTs Down Under) Com
plex three-part harmonies and driving
acoustic guitar licks. A three-part
audiodisiac.
Kerosene 454 (Atomic Music Hall) This
D C. band has been descnbed to me as
‘Bastro meets Drive Like Jehu.' They've
been produced by Jay Robbins of
Jawbox, and seeing as how they're in the
company of Galanas:Cerdd, they're defi
nitely okay in my book.
Live Dead Covers (Washington Street
Tavern) This isn’t a band; it's an event
Every Tuesday the T„.em has local (and
touring) bands come down to play Grate
ful Dead songs. Sometimes, when there
are no bands or they just want a change
ol pace, the club plays Dead bootleg
tapes.
Old Toby (Allen's) Blues-based rock.
Mostly covers.
Garrison Starr (40 Watt) Starr is a
singer/songwriter in the same vein as Iris
Dement and Lucinda Williams. Her new
EP is called Stupid Girl
Strutter (Georgia Theatre) Itts the ulti
mate Kiss tribute except that anyone who
should care about this probably jus! saw
the real Kiss at the Omni (which, by the
way, was an out-of-body experience).
Oh well, better luck next year.
The V-Roys (High Hat) These guys
play rock'n'roll in a way that’s just a little
bit greasy, if ya know what I mean.
They're also a great batch of
scngwnters, and no less than Steve
Earle signed them and produced their
incredible new record, Just Add tee. for
his E-Squared label. This will be an
FARLY SHOW, starting al 10 p.m. The
da is to get people home by 1 a.m.

Jack Slack: 3h Spades
Ever smack your shin against the edge of a coffee taole really hard 9
Maybe you've popped your spine and felt a jolt shoot through your body,
down your arms and out your hands. Jack B'ack is that electric vibralior.
running through your body, that sensation making vou slightly uneasy
but very much aware.
The New York City trio play the greasiest rockabilly that side of the
Hudson River. Their music is a nasty mix of punk, blues and rock’n'roll,
borrowing from the roughest part of all three Sometimes something can
be so ugly, it's gorgeous, and Jack Black has that in spades.
Jack Black ventured south to Chapel Hill, N.C., recently, paying this
summer's Sleazefest. The band aiso released a 7-inch, “Money Talk" b/w
“She's Coin' Down,” on Atlanta's Casino Royale Recoras. The two bere-
crushing songs were produced by Kosmo Vinyl, former manager of the
Clash.
Jack Black out-Horton the Reverend, and while that may be sacri
lege, so be it. These boys flat play hard, and they leave the competition
in a cloud of dust. They cut driving three-chord stomoers bound in fat,
juicy bass and thumping drums. Their tempos drop in half out of no
where, only to suddenly shift gears quickly and drive on home.
Plus, with names like Wes Houston, David Quick and Johnny Katonah,
they're in the right line of work. Jack Black play it ugly and mean, a bruis
ing belch of electricity.
Just try not to get too banged up, and while you're at it, maybe you
should move that end table.
Neil Swanson
Don t miss Jack Black at the Atomic Music Hall Wednesday, Nov. 13.
