ARTISTS EXIT
The work of four graduating students will
be on display at a senior exit show Nov. lb-
22 at the Lamar Dodd Visual Arts Building
on campus. Works presented will include
paintings, drawings and prints — an impres
sive array of media showcasing the talents
of the diverse quartet. Those who have not
recently had the opportunity to see a show
on campus may be in for a pleasant surprise.
The work of students in the art program has
of late taken on a highly accomplished and
deeply personal character. Each individual
involved in the exhibit is noteworthy for de
termination in realizing a unique vision.
Erika Bradford will display 37 different
still life paintings, which taken as a col
lective whole, bring about insight into the
artist's most personal feelings. The 'terns cho
sen for the painting are of the household va
riety: glass jars, plants and pill bottles are sorm
examples. Bradford opted to use these mun
dane objects so as not to distract from the
larger significance of the project, which she
describes as “the emotional response brought
about simply by color and canvas.”
Jessica Richardson will present a number
(perhaps 10) of graphite and pastel drawings,
each rendered in an explorative, non-objec
tive mode. A strong emphasis in her work is
placed on the action of drawing and the rela
tionship between colors within the composi
tion. Ultimately, her goal is to achieve an
intimate, subtle way of drawing, one in which
emotional states manifest themselves within
the renderings. She cites the influence of 20th
century artist Cy Twombley, who once re
marked, “The drawing is the interruption of
an inner monologue."
The paintings of Chido Johnson are a
collection of lost fragments without any
particular boundary. Each of the works is a
self-portrait. They are exceptional in their

ure. Johnson is also an accomplished sculp
tor and has been hard at work in the arts
since infancy. In fact, one piece at the show
derived its composition from paintings
done in early childhood.
Margaret Maurice begins her paintings
working from life in a strictly observational
manner. Once she has acquired all the in
formation she deems necessary, she then
attempts to make the painting succeed as
an entity in and of itself. The five works
she will display depict empty, hanging
clothes, a subject meant to convey the idea
of unfulfilled expectation. Her chief goal
is to try and use color to describe three-
dimensional forms in space.
“I am looking to define form and
achieve luminosity with color, rather than
simply by use of light and dark values,” she
said. “The idea was one pointed out to me
by professor Bill Paul, and I find it very
meaningful.”
The maturing work of this foursome re
flects well upon the BFA program at
UGA. Each of these young artists is likely
to be heard from in the future. Soon, they
will disperse to different graduate schools or
other parts of the country, in search of new-
creative challenges and endeavors. Here is a
chance to see ther work, together at once,
before they’re gone.
