Thanks to Curtiss Pemice lor filling in re
cently while I was s&vphng film and lager
in Deutschland. I hope this explains ev
erything.
Big Night (PG-13) A wonderfully sweet
end funny film about two Italian brothers
struggling to succeed in high cuisine on
the New Jersey shores in the 1950s.
Stanley Tucci, who corrected along with
Campbell Scott, and Tony Shalhoub pre
pare an elaborate dmer for jazzman Louie
Prima in an attempt to save their restau
rant. Great cast, great humor, great dia
logue... donT miss it (Beechwood)
Dear God (PG) TVs Greg Kinnear t$kes
on all the letters sent to the Lord Almighty.
Garry Marshall directs this mild comedy
about a postal worker's attempt to do
some good in the world. I prefer the old
George Bums flicks about God, but I shall
not cast the first stone at he who laughs
last alt the way to the bank Amen (Mall
Inside)
Die Hard (R) 1988. Bruce Willie plays a
New York cop and spends quality time
with some grumpy terrorists over the holi
days in California. Lots of violence for ev
eryone. With all the gun blasts Willis may
one day die hard of hearing. Take it easy,
old fella. (Tate)
Dc the Right Thing (R) One ol Spike
Lee's best. This 1989 film was the first I
saw of the talented Ossie Davis, Giancarlo
Esposito and John Turturro. Set in New
York City on the hottest day of the year,
tensions surge racially and emotionally. A
wide variety of very real human stories
tangle around main character Mookie.
played by Spike The ending maybe con
fusing. but this shoulo not be missed
(Tate)
First Wives Club (PG-13) Three
middle-aged ladies pat together in a
scheme to get back at their mean old ex-
husbands. If you donT mind being spoon
fed a well-produced, sale Hollywood com
edy for the '90s. go see this. Keaton,
Midler and Hawn are fine: the story's fine;
everything's just fine. (Beechwood)
Fly Away Home (PG) I hope to see
more roles for Anna Paqum. She plays a
strong, intelligent adolescent very well.
This touching fatnet-daughter film is
based cn a true story. Jett Daniels is the
awkward Dad. Lots of geese. Gooo (am
ity film. (Beecnwood)
The Gate of Heavenly Peace: nr) A
thorough 1995 oocumeniary from direc
tors Carma Hinton ana Richarc Gordon
about the protests ana subsequent mas
sacre a: Tinnanmen Square m 1989 The
Chinese uprising there was one of the
largest in Chnese history. Periiaps Clinton
should glance at this and reconsider his
'most favored' status lor China. This isnt
something you can catch on CNN. so go
see it. (Tate)
The Ghost And The Darkness (R)
Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas are hav
ing a nasty time in Africa with the two li
ons known as the Ghost and the Dark
ness I guess Kilmer forgot mat he was
supposed to mamtam an Irish brogue. Set
m the village Tsavo (Swahili tor 'place cf
slaugnier") in 1896. this true tale just might
scare the trousers of! ya. Dougias is kinda
goofy at times especially when he's try
ing to dance with the tribesmen bulover-
atl. this is a good flick ;5eecnwood)
Girls Town (R) A hard-hitting balanced
debut tor independent filmmaker Jim
McKay. 1 iii Taytec Anna Grace and BnJdin
Harris cope net only with the loss of a .
friend but also issues of rape and self-re-
soeci. The documentary filming style
adds a convincing sense of reality lo some
very believable performances. T nis self-
described ‘feminist fifin' is dry. clever and
provocatively emotional. (Beechwuod)
Larger Than Lite (PG) Bill Murray. Mat
thew McConaughey ana a big elephant

Garofalo, the veterinaran from ‘The Truth
About Cats and Dogs,' luckily for the el
ephant. All three of these tine actas have

too. (Mall Inside)
The Long Kiss Goodnight (H) Sorry.
Dut Geena Davis barely pulls if 08 as an
assassin in this. Good old Samuel L Jack-
son steals the show in this am., resia action
film. The premise is promising, but the
payoff is lame, bloody lame. TbuTI laugh
out loud at Jackson as the second-rate
investigator, but youTI probably frown at
Geena DonT pay top dollar. (Mall Inside)
Michael CoiDns (R) A heavy and accu
rate portrayal ot the 1920s Irish Revolu
tionary Michael Collins from director Neil
Jordan (‘The Crying Game’). In fact.
Stephen Rhea ct ‘The Crying Game' 's a
great support to the powerful Liam
Neeson The attention to detail and his
torical evenls solidifies a great perfor
mance from Neeson. Julia Roberts is in
the love triangle with Neeson and Ournn
and I'll say it again; learn the damn ac
cents! The subject matter may be a bit
unfamiliar to American audiences, but the
Delivery or, screen is dead straight Elabo
rate and dramatic. (Beechwooo)
The Mirror Has Two Faces (PG-13)
Barbra Streisand plays a professor with a
problem. She has trouble dealing with an
obsessive Mom. a sexless mamage to Jeff

Richard LaGravenese ("Bnoges of Madi
son County") wrote the script, so you ex

Phenomenon (PG-13) John Travolta
shows his sensitive side here m this well-
done human spirit fix. Forrest Whitaker
learns Portuguese and Robert Duvall loses
his pants arro his temper. Look for Travolta
in another spiritual nlm. ‘Michael," out
soon. 1 guess the Church Of Scientology
is getting tc him some (Alps)
Ransom (R) High-buOget Hollywood

ana Gary Sirase. Directed by Ron Howard.
Shcuid be pretty good HavenT seen it yet:
tne lines were loo long to get m. ana that
should tell you something. (Mall Outside)
Romeo And Juliet (R) This updated
Shakespeare story is an extraordinary vi
sual piece sei in modern (or very near-tu-
turei urban times. Froblem .s, you may
never ever get used to street gangs anc
teenagers bantering away in Elizabethan
English Claire Danes, from TV's ‘My So-
Calleo Life and new film To Gillian On
Her 37th Birthday.' steals the show from
smug punk Leo DiCaprio (‘Whats Eating
Gilbert Grape" and ‘Basketball Dianes').
The best scenes feature Romeo and Juliet
alone; the worst were the clumsy
MontagueiCapdet gang fights. All the dia
logue is original text. I admire director
Luhrmanns great casl and attempt to
modernize a classic love tragedy, hut I"
did not enjoy this, vou will likely eithe' rove
or hate it. Wafch for a cameo from M
Emmet Walsh as Apothecary' (Man Out
side)
Secrets And Lies (R) C<rec!or Mike
weigh (‘Naked") won some awards at
Cannes lor this drama about individuals
rising above their weaknesses despite
race, class and family Leigh is highly ad
mired in Britain and this film may jusi pul
nim in the spotlight nere as well
(Beechwood)
Set It Off (R) Dreclcr F Gary Gray may
need some time off from working on hip-
hop videos before his next feature be
cause this film delivered like ‘Vo! MTV

‘NYPD Blue’ star Blair Underwood and
detective John McGinfev (‘Nixon,’ ’The

Sleepers (R) The DeNiro Bacon Pit Four
youths are brutalized in a reformatory by
guard Kevin Bacon, then seek payback
in aoutttiood. Loca* priest Robert De Niro
and alcoholic lawyer Dustin Hoffman help
out IVe heard very mixed reviews on this
film from tolks. At least this adds more
options for college students obsessed with
“the Kevin Bacon Game." (Mat Inside)
Swingers (R) A hilarious independent
release starring newcomer Jon Favreau,
who also wrote and co-produced. Favreau
is Mke, a struggling actor Irom New York
whe tries his luck in Hollywood After
months he's still not over his ex-girifnend.
His swingin' pais try to shake Nm out ot
his plight and tram him to be hip and pick
up hot chicks in the cocktail bars Lots ot
guy talk and self-deprecating humor.
(Beechwood)
Supercop (R) Jackie Chan and Michelle
Khan kick ass Over and over again Great
action, great explosions, great humor, bad
overdubbing. Chan is the man. man. Stay
tor the stunt out-takes! (Tale)
That Thing You Do (PG) Tom Hanks
delivers the sale but enjoyable goods wiih
this music comedy Tom Everett Scott is
as likable as Hanks hmselt. l heard that
The Who's Roger Daltrey was kicked out
of a trreater recently while screaming
tnrngs like ’No way!’ and ‘Come on!" at

Thinner (R) Ooooon, I’m losing weight.,
how scary! An obnoxious tat guy is curseo
when ne plows into a gypsy with his car.
He sheds a few pounds a day until... well.
..ho cares? Stephen King should have
cast Rush Limbaugh as the mam charac

A Time To Kill (R) The big summer
Grisham story about Mississippi justice.
Even though Samuel L Jackson isnT fea

To Gillian On Her 37th Birthday
(PG-13) Peter Gallagher (‘Short Cus’) is
the father. Claire Danes {’Romeo and
Juliet") is the teen daughter. Katny Baker
is the concerned aunt. Gallagher can’t let
go ot tne nierr.ory of his wife (Michelle
Pfeiffer) even rwc years after her death
On her birthday, the family awkwardly
spends the weekend on tne beach m

the in-laws for Gallagher Mild, touching
and sometimes funny. Not great but rot
bad. (Beechwood)
MOVIE
Lone Star (P) I saw this early in the yea
down m Charleston and couldnt wait to
come home and sec- it aga.n. Problem
was. however, no Athens cinema carried
it... until now. "Lone Star' is a ricn. plush,
mysterious ad complex film set in 3 dusty
Texas bordei town. This is the kind of film
that utilizes scenery, landscapes and
structures almost as much as the cast for
effect
Loca Shpc“ cnris Cooper has a'ways
been tr, the shadow ot his legendary fa
ther. another sheriff played by Matthew
McConaughey. A badge and a skeleton
are found in the nearby h/ifs, sparking a
renewed investigation of the ’murder’ of
loathed Sheriff Kris Khstofferson Cooper
and McConaughey were both in ’A Trie
To Kill' as different men of law, but they
both shine brighter in ’Lone Star.’
The townspeople are a functional mix of
white, black, Hispanic and Native Ameri
can ethnicity. Characters from each seg
ment ot the town play key and sometimes
surprising rotes in the unraveling of the
murder mystery. Suspense, drama and
visuals at their fullest. Enjoy this intense
American film while itfc here! (Beechwood)
