The Crow. City of Angels (R) You may
neeo extra beer money for this one. Like
the first "Crow" this is set in a gloomy, fu-
tunstic, urban nightmare with the likes of
Iggy Pop hanging around. Hey, if you
need to dive into the Gothic scene, why
no! dress up and pout at a cafe'. I don't
get it. 1 his isn't worth more than the $1 50
cover. (Georgia Theater)
Dear God (PG) Greg Kinear did just fine
in last year's ‘Sabrina,’ and is okay in this
Garry Marshall light comedy about a
postal worker responding to all the 'Dear
God’ dead letters piling up. Nothing spe
cial here. I would rather have seen Kinear
responding to letters to the editor... it
might have been funmer.(Mall Inside)
Diner (R) 1982. This is a good one from
director Barry Levinson with a strong cast
featuring Mickey Rourke. Steve
Guttenberg, Daniel Stem, Kevin Bacon
and Ellen Barkin, Its set In 1959Baltimore
a! the corner hangout, where each male
character flaunts his own strengths and
delects unknowingly. Friendships, prob
lematic relationships and cheap, greasy
food Sounds like the Grill on weekends.
(Tate)
First Wives Cli* (PG-13) Sale and tidy
Hollywood fun from the almost middle-
aged trio of Hawn, Keaton and Midler
These avenging ex-wtves certainly down
plenty of martinis along the
way(Beechwood)
The Ghost And Tie Darkness (R)
Based on the true story ol an African vil
lage terrorized by two man-eating lions
during construction of a British railroad.
Tense, frightening and very 'Jaws’ like.
Val Kilmer, the Irish engineer, and Michael
Douglas, the famous American hunter,
seem a bit exaggerated at times, but the
th>filing ending is worth the wait.
(Beechwood)
High School High (PG-'3) Imagine
Master Thespian cast in Tm Gonna Get
You Sucka.’ SNL veteran Jon Lovitz plays
a naive white-guy principal in a predomi
nantly b'a"’' n oh school. Optimism and
utter s ..., go hand in hand in this silly
comedy. (Man Inside)
Hunchback of Nob* Dame (G) This
is not about the college team. Disney is
at it again. If the kids didnl get enough of
this the first time, here's your chance to
bring 'em back for cheap. Great, safe
animation and the friendliest portrayal of
Quasimodo yet (Alps)
Jack (PG-13) Robin Williams grew up too
fast. Now all the fourth graders are mak
ing fun of him. Francis Ford Coppola
though! this would be amusing. You may
prefer "Mork arid Mindy’ to this miss But
what the heck, itls only a buck-fifty (Alps)
Jingle All the Way (PG) It's Christmas
Eve and Sinbad and Arnold
Schwarzenegger battle over the last Turbo
Man doli for their greedy little kids. Who
wifi appease the brat with the coveted
action figure 7 Who will buy into the holi
day season marketing strategy? We ll see.
(Mall Inside)
Larger Than Life (PG) Poor old Bill
Murray. Why does he settle for such lame
comedy? What’s Matthew McConaughey
doing drwng a trjck? Why doesnt Bill get
along with the elephant? This comedy is
one of those industry throw-aways. Not
recommended. (Mall Inside)
The Long Kiss Goodnight (R) A
comeback for Gena Davis and another
tine step ahead for the hilarious Samuel
L. Jackson Davis, a mother and teacher
suftenng from amnesia hires Jackson a
two-bit investigator to set it off. As it turns
cut, Gena is an assassin for Uncle Sam.
Violent and corny. (Mall Inside)
Lone Star (R) Don't miss this John
Sayies drama! 'Lone Star’ is a complex,
rich story based in a diverse, dusty Texas
town revolving around the sheriff (Chris
Cooper). He confronts his personal pas,
and his father's legend while investigat
ing the mysterious disappearance of a
sheriff 40 years earlier (played by Kris
Kristofferson). This is one of this year's
absolute best, and I'm gladfinally made
it to Athens (Beechwood)
Michael Collins (R) Liam Neeson is ex
cellent as Michael Collins, the Irish revo
lutionary leading the fight fa freedom from
British rule. Director Neil Jordan (’The
Crying Game’ and "Interview With A Vam
pire’) accurately portrays the dramatic
events in the 1920^ in Ireland, although I
read that some English critics are miffed
about the ‘glamorization’ of one whom
some consider a terrorist. Also starring
Aidan Quinn, Julia Roberts, Alan Rickman
and Stephen Rhea. Don’t miss this.
(Beechwood)
The Mirror Has TVro Faces (PG-13)
I don't normally like Barbra Streisand and
Jeff Bridges, but they were both very good
in this touching comedy Streisand plays
a passionate English professor desperate
fa true love. Bridges is the dry mathema
tician who theorizes that sex ruins all re
lationships. The two hook up after some
hilarious courting sessions, including an
awkward dinner with meddling Mom
Lauren Bacall. This is a well acted, well
directed (Streisand) film. Bring your older
relatives to this over the holidays.
(Beechwood)
The Mission (R) 1986. Epic film set in
18th Century South Arnica. Jeremy Irons
is an adventurous Jesuit priest who con
fronts Robert DeNiro, a brutal slave hunter,
while establishing a mission. After convert
ing DeNiro, Irons continues his crusade
until Portuguese invaders thieaten total de
struction. Marc Pilvinsky strongly recom
mends this film, therefore I do, too. (Tate)
Phenomenon (PG-13) John Travolta
shows his sensitive side here in this well-
done human-spirit film. Forrest Whitaker
learns Portuguese and Robert Duvall
loses his pcnts and his temper. Look fa
Travolta in another spiritual film, ‘Michael,’
out soon. I guess the Church Of
Scientology is getting to him some. (Alps)
Ransom (R) Slick and huge, but surpns-
mgly good Mel Gibson and Rene Russo
battle to retrieve their son from bad guys
Gary Sinise and Lili Tayla. Ron Howard
directs a tense and twisted plot, peppeied
with anguished scenes that at times re
semble ’Seven’ and ’The Usual Sus
pects' m appearance. Despite the urges
of FBI guy Defray Undo, Gibson dares to
threaten the kidnappers directly. Strong
cast and a good thriller (Mall Outside)
Romeo And Juliet (R) Claire Danes is
Juliet and Leonardo DiCaprio is Romeo in
this updated Shakespeare story. Shot in
Mexico City with a huge cast and lavish
production, the film is at times stunning
and almost overwhelming Viewers, how
ever, may no! buy any ol the portrayals by
the young actors. Some scenes are very
rigid and i kward and at time over-acted.
You'll either love it a hate it. Also starring
John Leguizamo, Pete Posthlewaite and
Brian Dennehy. (Mall Outside)
Secrets And Lies (R) See Movie
Pick.(Beechwood)
Set K Off (R) A daring urban action flick
with four strong female characters in the
lead roles. ‘Set It Off intends to expose
the unjust effects of ‘the system’ as well
as the heroic, desperate attempts by
these individuals (played by Queen
Latifah, Jada Pinkett, Vivica Fox and new
face Kimberly Elisey The story, however,
is plagued by flashy, gratuitous violence
and MTV dialogue. Director Gary Gray
loses sight of the real aim of the story, fac
ing some rather unconvincing scenes
throughout. Crime, action, revenge and
ridiculousness. (Mall Outside)
Sleepers (R) This long drama about four
New York youths seeking revenge against
their brutal reform school guard is sup
posedly based on a true story. Good cam
eos from Dustin Hoffman and Robert
DeNiro. Heavy, disturbing and well per
formed. Brad Pitt continues his quest tor
respect. (Mall Inside)
Space Jam (PG) No. this isn't a Wide
spread Panic rockumentary. Looney
Tunes, Michael Jadan, Bill Murray and a
pack of alien ‘mon-stars' hash it out on
the court. Do you remember when the
Harlem Globetrotters played against the
Robots on ‘Gilligan's Island’? This is sort
of a ’Roger Rabbit’ version of that mas
terpiece. (Mall Inside)
Star Trek: First Contact (PG-13) The
’Nexi Generation' crew from TV venture

cack 300 years in time to confront Bjorn

Patrick Stewart, LaVar Burton, and
Jonathan Frakes draw the line and dive
in head first with the special elects de
partment along lor good measure. This is
the eighth ’Trek’ film and could well be
one of the best (Mall Outside)
Swingers (R) Great independent com
edy from Doug Liman and Jon Favreau.
“Swingers’ perfectly captures the guy-talk
conversations and humor between a
group of close friends. Basically. Mike
(Favreau) is moping around LA for months
after getting dumped by a girtlriend back
East His pals try 10 get him back into the
game with some ’advice’ on clubbing in
the hip LA cocktail scene. Every charac
ter will remind you of someone you know
here in town (and ifcie at Flagpole). Don!
miss this! (Beechwoc-J)
That Thing You Do (PG) Check this
out if you're in the mood for something fun
and light. The story sounds goofy, but
Hanks directs well with a strong cast in
cluding Liv Tyler and Tom Everett Scott.
The one-hit wonder band, the Wonders,
rise and fall while drilling the tide song into
your head 11 times. (Beechwood)
Thinner (R) Robert Burke, a favorite of
Amencan director Hal Hartley, is casl as
the obnoxious, fat businessman cursed by
a gypsy fa running over an ad lady. The
curse causes the fat guy to shed pounds
continuously. Based on the Stephen King
novel. Burke is normally good, but, man,
this film wasn’t. (Beechwood)
A Time To Kill (R) The big summer
Grisham story about Mississippi justice.
Even though Samuel L Jackson ism fea
tured enough, McConaghey, Spacey and
Sutherland make up for it. Good drama,
despite the gratuitous Klan scenes. In
Germany this is titled ’The Jury' and
Sandra Bullock gets top billing. She's
barely even necessary. Go see this if you
haven't already.
