BENEFIT FOR BARROW ELEMEN
TARY (Georgia Theatre) Featuring a stel
lar line-up. including As« Nisi Mass, a
Normaltown Flyers reunion, plus
Greg Reece and Where's Anita?.
Sounds like a great show (or a great
cause. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7
at the door
Bottleneck (Atomic Music Hall) They're
the only out of-town band on a bill with
locals EQK and Cat Brand Bats. Bring a
can o! food (and no Cream of Mushroom
soup, please) for $1 off at the door.
Cat Brand Bats (Atomic Music Hall)
They play a sparse brand of slow rock that
wouldn't be out of place next to Shepherds
of Hot Pavement, Low or even Asa Nisi
Masa. They're in the midst of recording
some new stuff, so stay tuned...
The Cariisles (City Bar) They've got a
slight ska flavor, and feature two Wuxtry
employees and Melinda Kershner on vo
cals and saxophone. Their new cassette
is chock-full of upbeat pop rock, but
there's the ever-present ska guitar work
to give it a little extra spice.
Emerson Quiet Kool (Atomic Music
Hall) Therr new EP, "The Demand For Vir
gin Paper,* should be out any day now.
It's a swell offering of textured pop-punk
songs (sorta like Superchunk witnout the
caffeine). You can bring a can of food for
S1 off at the door.
Duans Jarvis (40 Watt) His newest
Medium Cool record, D.J.S Front Porch,
is a great record of minimalist folk, and rock
songs, and it has Jarvis collaborating with
greats like Andrew Williams (of The Wil
iams Brothers) and Bill Bor* (of, wed, Bill
Bonk). This is one of the good ones, folks.
Jay Mark waiter A Friends (Allen's)
The Sandfly member wiS get by with a little
help from his friends.
Phat Fhive (Half Moon) Heavy, funk-in-
fused jazz.
Jonathan Richman (40 Watt) Richman
is a troubadour—one of few entertainers
today who trudge willingly all over the
country bringing joy—not angst—to the
world. His songs can be funny, sad, deep
and just plain silly at any given moment.
He is simply THE MAN. See story on page
17. Duane Jarvis opens.
Nathan Sheppard (DTs Down Under)
Song-oriented folk rock from a guy who
knows that sort of thing inside and out.
Song Swap (The Globe. Upstairs) Bring
an instrument and a song, or just go to
hum along. The folks who run the Swap
invite anyone who wants to test drive new
songs or old, originals or obscure covers,
to this gathering of the scribes
Squat (High Hat) Smoothed-out |azz with
a kick in the pants.
Swing street Quartet (Jittery Joe's in
Five Points) Jazz from 7:30 to 10 p.m. It's
in a smoke-free zone, and there wilt be
tasty goodies available for your perusal.
Mark Wiggins (Wishbone's) Blues, folk,
country.
Yahblo Canyon (Athens Brewng Com
pany) Tiro sets of acoustic jams drawing tom
the guitar masters o; the'60r and 70s.
Thursday,
November 21
Trey Boyer Band (No Where Bar) Folk-
tempered rock.
Eiyption (Night Owl Lounge) Accord
ing to the presskit, this is "The Wbrtd's
Greatest Tribute to Van Halen,* and who
knows, with their recent Dave-is-in-the-
band-no-wait-hels-out-of-it shenanigans,
maybe people's interest in old-school Van
Halen is piqued. And 111 ted you one thing:
I'd rather see Eruption at the Night Owl
than the new Van Halen at the Omni any
day. (Please, God, dont let Van Halen start
playing 'More Than Words'). Two sets at
10 p.m. and midnight.
Jim Cartand A Wit Rehberg (Allen's)
Outlaw country.
The Healers (Georgia Bar) Chicago &
Texas-style blues from 10 pm. till closing
time.
Josh Joplin Band (Georgia Theatre)
Opening for Underwaterfall, and supporl-
nvg their jangle-pop debut, FYcyecfvX Heacf.
Kudzu Jones (DTs Down Under) They
got what you need.
Edwin McCain (40 Watt) I remember
hearing an independent record McCain
released a few years ago and being mildly
impressed. Back then he wasn't yet in
Hootie's shadow, and he had more of a
Peter Gabriel/Sting thing going on. Now
hels more folk-based, quite a bit wealthier,
and singing duets with Darius Rucker. The
kids seem to love this sort of thing.
Popcyde opens.
Mudcat w / Neal Pattman (High Hat)
Atlanta blues band Mudcat has released
a new CD called Worldwide Mud. It's yer
basic blues album, but it sometimes strays
into pop territory (the Hoolie-rsh ‘Blue
Style’), upbeat lounge (the swell ’Savan
nah Strut’), and has a good deal of supe
rior slide-guitar work. It's done well and,
as always wit* this band, there's a whole
lotta shakin' goin' on.
Popcycle (40 Watt) Song-oriented
power pop from the Artists Formerly
Known As Catfish Jenkins. Opening for
Edwin McCain.
Space Voyage Ahem (Washington
Street Tavern) I'm not exactly sure how to
describe 'em, and neither is the band!
They’re a power trio now and will likely
rock this joint silly.
Thumb (Atomic Music Hall) Where punk
gets taught a thing or two by pop. Or is it
the other way around? Two-minute bursts
of power have never been so much fun.
Underwatoffan (Georgia Theatre) The
groove rockers' day has come. Tonight
they celebrate the release of their debut
CD. Give 'em a hand.
Friday,
November 22
Aftermath (Georgia Theatre) Live hip-
hop featuring a violin player, a drummer, a
sample maestro, a keyboardist, a bassist
some rappers and more. Check 'em out.
Park Chisolm A Adam Wright
(Allen's) Acoustic and electric rock n’ roll
sounds blend together behind a thick tap
estry ol harmony, melody, and rhythmic
intimacy. Chisolm is a baritone from Nash-
vile, and Wright plays solo guitar. Together
they play acoustic music along the lines
of Stewart & Winfield.
The Continentals (High Hat) The Con
tinentals play country, love songs and all
around crooners, and come highly rec
ommended by just about everyone who
has seen 'em. Including me.
Cravin’ Melon (40 Watt) Groove-ori
ented pop. Opening for Hobex.
Fuzzy Sprouts (Georgia Theatre)
Schizophrenic pop-metal-blues-rock.
They're zany, ihe/re mangy, and boy are
they a blast live. Aftermath opens.
Hebex (40 Watt) This is a new- band
fronted by former Dillon Fence main man
Greg Humphries, but donl expect a lick
of jangle rock — Hobex is a soul band
straighi outta Marvin Gaye territory.
Kilgore Trout (DTs Down Under) One
band member told me they're sorta Ike
the Allman Brothers meets Stevie Wbnder
— a little funk, a little groove and some
southern rock.
Glenn Phillips (Atomic Music Hall) 2
sets of intricate guitar improvs starting at
10:30 p.m.
Me Grew Gap Band (Wishbone's) Blue-
grass straight from the Old Country.
Mr. Pftffu* (City Bar) They just played
Bluesfeast 6 (which was a tremendous
success), and are mixing up their blues
stylings with some boogie-woogie, swing,
and shuffle.
The Simpletons (Lowery’s) Rock cov
ers and originals.
The Veit (40 Watt) This isn’t the 24-7
Spyz-type rock band caSed The Veldt, is
it? Opening for Hobex.
