mic folk from 10 p.m. to closing time.
Braathianes (The Globe, Upstairs) A
trio combining tasteful use of 3 delay
pedal with some beautiful female vocals,
sparse guitar work and drums that are just
barely there. It's airy and atmospheric, and
will be accompanied by some Coiman
McCord films. See article on page 17.
Park Chisolm & Adam Wright (Ath
ens Brewing Company) Chisolm is from
Nashville and Wright is from Newnan. To
gether they play acoustic music along the
lines of Stewart & Winfield.
AFTERNOON SHOW (High Hat) Ro
tors to Rust and Labtvnum from 4-7
p.m. Rotors to Rust is a heavy (yet me
lodic) rock band from Boston, and Labur
num is a four-piece indie pop band from
Charlotte.. Their new record. Unnoticed,
is a sort of lo-fi cornucopia of ideas. They
havealownmble going on throughout most
of the altxr 1 (sort of Ire Colfax Abbey did),
but there are definitely some swell songs
underneath the haze. Interesting.
Allan Hughes A Nathan Sheppard

show, starting whenever it feels right.
Hughes and Sheppard win be playing cov
ers plus lots of Sheppardls own originals
Gick (Atomic Music Hall) If you dont al
ready own iheir new cassette, Beautilul,
either consign yourself to the nether re
gions of the boneheaded or march down
to da sto' and pick up a copy or three.
Grayscale (Atomic Music Hall) Heavy,
pretty straightforward alternative rock.
They draw a lot of Alice in Chains com
parisons, but wha! they share with that
oand is simply a knack tor writing strong,
melodic metal songs. Playing with Gick
and Shek Ala Shek.
Haywood Ramblers (Memorial Hall
Balroom, UGA) Contra and Square Dance
music, with lessons provided at 7:30 p.m.
The dance runs from 8-11:45 p.m. Call
613-8287 for info.

street is that they're fantastic.
Over the Rhine (40 Watt) Aside from
the# still-new album Good Dog Bad Dog:
The Home Recordings, Cincinnati's Over
the Rhine will have yet another new record
called The Darkest Night of the Year in
stores the first week of December. Not only
are they a great band live or on record,
they're prolific as all get-out. Which makes
us very lucky folks indeed. See article on
page 19.
Shek Ala Shek (Atomic Music Hall)
From indie reck to experimental
skronkings to Sabbath/Zeppelin grooves
to a little bit of soul, Chapel Hiflb Shek Ala

Tavern) McCarthy is a recently trans
planted singer/songwriter who, for much
of her life, simply wrote songs because
the words and music came into her head
as she slept Now she's sharing that ex
perience with us as she does a regular
Monday night thing at the Tavern.
Tuesday,
November 26
Alta Peak (Washington Street Tavern)
This is the formerly unnamed band that
has been playing Grateful Dead covers
here at the Tavern for a while now. They
do something completely different every
week, so if the Dead is your thing, this
probablv is too. Give it a looksee.
Asa Nisi Masa (No Where Bar) Beauti
ful and haunting. Haunting and beautiful.
This band raises ideas about songcraft
to new levels. They're simply great.

Shek Ala Shek: You Gotta Shek Em Out
They called to say they were com
ing, but I just wasn't prepared.
The boys in Shek Ala Shek, an odd-
but-great Chapel Hill rock trio, entered
the Flagpole office win video camera in
hand. They were I ere to rteview me, they
said. Well, that's just not how things work
around here, I assured them. They didm
seem to understand, so a brief wrestling
match and afew bodyslams later, I had the
camera, and Shek Ala Shek was at my
mercy.
As a band, these guys are about as
daring and schizophrenic as Atlanta's Bob,
and wotid probably get along famously with
those genius weirdoes. They’ve got a five song CD that covers much territory — from Magneto-esqx high octane
Sabbath/Zeppelin rockers to irae subdued indie rock, soul, and weird almotf-dub stuff 'jsing guest sax and trunpet
players—and oespite the larring shifts in styles, it all works Their songs are lice a sign Dointing to some bturry object in
the distance; you're not sure what the object is a if you want to go there, but you go along anyway thanking yourself
when you get to a place much cooler than you had anticipated ri the first place.
Shek Ala Shek have been together for about a year, and have recently begin playing outside of Chapel Hi “just to
see who car grab onto the music and who cant,’ bassst/vocafet Daryl White says. Chapel HiH 6 getting a bttJe bit away
from the indie rock thing, he says, “but ife not quite up to ax, uni, rock speed.'
This tour and past ones have included dates with The Jesus Lizard, Capsize 7, Carp, and Babe the Blue Ox. Ther
CD EP is available now at Big Shot Records, and at a past show they once overheard someone say 1 just wet rry
pants.' That's about as strong a recommendation as anyone caici ask for.
By the way, guys, you’re not getting the camera back
