THUMBNAIL
Thumbnail / Cargo Music
Thumbnail is one of those
bands that sort of border on
hardcore and do a lot of
screamin' and yellin' over
lots of heavy non-melodic
music and distortion.
Surprisingly, it’s not bad
stuff. Every now and then
you find an MTV band who
tries to do this kind o f thing
in an attempt to sound
tough, but in a safe, boring
way. Thumbnail does it the
right way. Though I've never
been a big fan of this sort
of thing, even I was drawn
to this music. "Foreign Lan
guage Class," for example,
is noisy but it has such a
great pace and sense of
energy that you can't help
but admire it for being such
a great song. It sounds real
and honest — not contrived
— and sometimes that's
hard to find these days.
Though the music alone
isn't all that special or origi
nal — your basic college
garage band noise — the
lyrics balance it out and
make Thumbnail a pretty
even, appealing album. It's
perfect for blowing off
steam on bad mood days.

BRUTAL TRUTH
Kill Trend Suicide / Relapse
Records
Some magazine pro
claimed Rage Against the
Machine as the world's most
dangerous band. They even
made the cover. Obviously,
whoever made that judgment
has never been exposed to
New York's grindcore mon
sters Brutal Truth, who have
returned with a ten-song mini-
CD aptly titled Kill Trend Sui
cide. Brutal Truth is danger
ous. Frighteningly so.
Kill Trend Suicide contin
ues where their last full-length
effort, Need to Control, left
off Hyper-warp blast beats
combine with unimaginable
musical dexterity creating a
wall of painfully tangible
noise. Kevin Sharp’s vocals
and lyrics have never been
more acidic as Brutal Truth
calls for the "death of all that
is false-core." Musically. Bru
tal Truth defies true descrip
tion. The guitars spiral to
wards the atmosphere,
shrapnel-laced drumfire
punctures flesh and the bass
flays it. All instruments, in
cluding various power tools,
are played with a psychotic,
biood-letting frenzy bordering
on pure insanity. Jamming
your face into a meat-grinder
might come close to aptly
describing the Brutal Truth lis
tening experience. Then
again, it might not.
Brutal Truth continue to
produce some of the most
thought-provoking music in
any genre, much less
grindcore. And I wonder —
why aren't more people lis
tening? (Relapse. P.O. Bex

PAIN
Midgets With Guns /
Goggins Records
Pain sounds like they re
ally want to be a ska band,
out they're afraid to take
that risk and go all the way
with the idea. Maybe they
really haven't ever thought
of playing ska, but what a
shame. They have a terrific
horn section.
Although at first this al
bum sounded a bit too
much like a rip-off of TMBG,
it started growing on me af
ter a while. The horns really
do add something. Without
them, this band would
sound like a zillion other
college bands out there.
I wanted this to be a ska
album. It turned out to be
your basic pop-rock with
horns. But, you know, that's
actually not such a bad
thing. (Goggins Records,
P.O. Box 2112, Tuscaloosa,
AL 35486)

EINSTJRZENDE
NEUBAUTEN
Ende Neu/Mute
Einsturzende Neubauten’s
name translates literally as
“collapsing new building."
This rtame r eflects not only
the bands general philoso
phies, but often the sounds
they create as well. With
their beginnings in pure
sound constructions and sub
sequent deconstructions, us
ing not only traditional in
struments, but power tools,
various home-made ma
chines and anything else
that makes a sound,
Neubauten's music has
evolved over the years into
a different kind of noise. A
different kind of beauty.
Neubauten's new album,
Ende Neu, which is derived
from within their name,
means “end new.” Indeed,
this record could be consid
ered a new end for the
band. Although the band
now features only three
members, almost every
song on Ende Neu includes
an orchestra. To fans, the
idea may seem preposter
ous, but the beautiful or
chestrations really work. Ev
ery little sound, every beat
and every pause is put
there for a reason — for
beauty's sake.
Melodically, Ende Neu
continues where
Neubauten's incredible
Tabula Rasa left off, but
gone are the pure tones fol
lowed by massive explo
sions of sound. Instead,
screams are replaced by
whispers, and even the
simple noises made by
frantic scribbling is incor
porated in*o the percussion
of songs. Blixa Bargeld's
commanding vocals are ac
companied by soft female
voices on “Stella Maris" and
"Die explosion im
Festspieihause,” creating a
new tension rarely explored
in their past works.
In this case, Ende Neu
is not the calm before the
storm, but the unsettling
one left after Tabula Rasa
has laid the entire country
side in ruins. Neubauten
has again shown a new re
finement in their chaos and
has successfully created
not only an incredible new
album, but another perfect
piece of art.
