Star ‘ftek (PG-13)
Bulletproof (R) Sandler and
Wayans play cop-thief buddies while
James Caan plays your typical
druglord. There are plenty of one-
liner laughs here, but not much else.
This violent, action-comedy is, how
ever. a step forward for the talented
Adam Sandler. (Georgia Theater)
The English Patient (R) A heavy,
romantic epic-drama set in World
War ll-era Europe starring Ralph
Fiennes (“Shindler s List'), Kristin
Scott Thomas ('Four Weddings and
a Funeral"), Juliette Binoche ("Blue")
and Willem Dafoe. A suffering patient
in a Tuscan monastery recalls a
tragic iove affair while his nurse in
evitably fans in love with him. This
film could well be an award-winner.
(Beechwood)
First Wives Club
The Ghost And The Darkness
(R) Val Kilmer in a valid comeback
from the awful "Island of Dr Moreau."
Kilmer and Michael Douglas hope to
rid an African village of two man-eat
ing lions before London loses its tem
per. Based on a true story. Kilmer
should watch "Michael Collins" for
dialect pointers before attempting an
Irish accent again. (Beechwood)
High School High (PG-13) This is
one of the worst movies showing in
Athens! However, there are a few re
deeming factors here; Tia Carrere
("Wayne’s World") plays a sexy guid
ance counselor, Louise Fletcher
(Nurse Ratched from "One Flew Over
The Cuckoo’s Nest") plays tie cold-
hearted principal. Jon Lovitz is the naive
teacher in the overly-exaggerated stereo
typical inner-city school, and the laughs
ain’t there. (Beechwood)
Hunchback of Notre Dame (G)
Disney version of the classic tale This
animated film features the voices of Tom
Hulce. Jason Alexander and other chubby
adults. Good flick for the kios, so catch it
before it leaves this week. (Alps)
Jack (PG-13) I wish AC/DC's song
‘The Jack" had made it to the
soundtrack. Oh. well. Robin Williams
has a disease that makes him age too
fast, and this is the subject of ridicule
among his peers. ! know the feeling
(Alps)
Jingle All the Way (PG) I guess
Arnold feels obliged to toss out one for
the kids, uke with "Junior" and ‘Last
Action Hero" once a year. This team-
up with smug tunnyman(?) Sinbad
makes fun of crass holiday commer
cialism. This film is crass holioay
commercialism. Maybe the kids can
laugh at all the "chase scenes" in the
toy stores, but not much else. Also
stars Phil Hartman and Jim Belushi.
(Mali Inside)
Last Man Standing (R) Bruce
Willis dresses up : n some sharp '30s
suits, drives out West and challenges
Christopher Wa'ken and Bruce Dern
to a nasty game of "quarters' at Wil
liam Sanderson’s bar. There’s plenty
of ounsmoke and blood, but for a
Western-style story, I suggest "Lone
Star" over this. But, what the hey, it's

Lone Star (R) Great film. A Texas
sheriff (Chris Cooper) hesitates, then
digs for the truth about his legendary
father (Matthew McConaughey) and
the body of a hated but intelligent
lawman from 1957 (Kris
Kristofferson). Along the way, other
unresolved stories involving various
locals (Elizabeth Pefta. Clifton Jones
and even Frances MacDormand) be
come as important as the "murder" it
self. This is a rich, well-balanced film
from director John Sayles. Highly rec
ommended (Beechwood)
The Mirror Has Two Faces (PG-
13) See Movie Pick (Beechwood)
101 Dalmatians (G) This is the live-
action version of Disney's 1961 ani
mated classic starring Glenn Close as
Cruella Deville and Jeff Daniels and
Joely Richardson as the proud puppy
owners. Close didn’t need much
make-up for the oart and Daniels fi
nally shaved after his roles in "Two
Days in the Valley" and "Fly Away
Home." Look for Close as the First Lady
in the upcoming "Mars Attacks" as well
(Beechwood)
Phenomenon (PG-13) A small Califor
nia town can't quite accept that nice
guy(?) John Travolta suddenly became
phenomenally intelligent. I kept thinking
of old "Welcome Back Kotter" episodes
and almost joined in. This is actually a
good, human-spirit story with a good
cast (Robert Duvall, Forrest Whitaker,
Kyra Sedgewick) and is well worth see
ing. (Alps)
Ransom (R) Ron Howard directs a very
dramatic anu gripping thriller starring
Mel Gibson and Rene Russo. One of the
New Kids on the Block steals Gibson's
son. and the infuriated Gibson ignores
Delray Linde's FBI advice and takes the
kidnappers head-on. This is a big pro
duction and all, but with support from
Gary Sinise and Lili Taylor, "Ransom"
succeeds. (Mall Outside)
Romeo And Juliet (R) This huge up
dated version of Shakespeare's clas
sic love tragedy will either dazzle you
or infuriate you. DiCaprio and Danes
are good in some scenes, dreadful in
others. The awkward s'reet-gang-
type rivalry seems even more awk
ward with the Elizabethan verse spo
ken. You may as well see what all the
hoopla is about, but avoid the full ad
mission. will ya? (Mail outside)
Set It Oft (R) As an action film that
features four African-Americar fe
males taking on the corrupt "system *
this is an important contemporary
film. As a story, though, this sucks I
was never convinced that these four
inner city friends (Jada Pinkett,
Queen Latifah. Vivica Fox and Kim
berly Elise) could or would turn to vio
lent crime as easily as they c-.d.
Maybe director Gary Gray felt the au
dience would be predominantly hra-
nop fans. (Mall Outside)
Sleepers (R) With Dustin Hoffman
and Robert DeNiro helping out, a
pack of rascals led by Brad Pitt seeks
revenge against a brutal reform
school guard, played by Kevin Ba
con. Heavy, dramatic and quite long
I'm not sure if the reform school
scenes are exaggerated, but direc
tor Barry Levinson insists that "Sleep
ers" is "based on a true story." (Mall
Inside)
Space Jam (PG) Silly and full of
marketable items, "Space Jam" is a
flick for the younger crowd It's not the
Looney Toons without the voice of Mel
Blanc, right 7 There are some cute,
amusing scenes, especially with Bill
Murray and Wayne Knight, but this is
pretty much predictable fluff. Jordan
topples Shaq's "Kazaam" with ease.
(Mall Inside) .
The Spitfire Grill (PG-13) What
may pass for heartwarming and
touching for some sure looked syr
upy and messy to me (with syrupy
music throughout). This story follows
Percy (Allison Elliot) on her new jour
ney, as she arrives in a small Maine
town after a five-year jan term. She
has predictable impacts on various
townspeople and makes friends with
a hermit in the woods. This may be
okay if you're bored this Monday, but
don't blame me if you gag (Georgia
Theatre)
Star Trek: First Contact (PG-13)
I've heard reports ranging from
‘great special effects" to "great spe
cial effects, dude." (Mall Outside)
Swingers (R) This is a good intro
duction to the burgeoning cocktail
lounge scene in Hollywood. Mike
(Jon Favreau) can't get over his ex
girlfriend, and for months floats aim
lessly in and out of the singles scene
with some overly confident pals
(Vince Vaughn, Patrick Van Horn).
Mikes buddies live in a Hollywood
reality, but Mike is sincere and tran
scends the "swingers" scene. There
are some lulls and weaknesses in the
film, but the humor is dry. mockino
and self-deprecating, and the obvi
ous homage to "Reservoir Dogs" was
hilarious. (Beechwood)
Thinner (R) Starring Robert Burxe
and Joe Mantegna. Based on a 1985
Stephen King novel. "Thinner"
serves as "a metaphor for death and
cancer and AIDS." claims director
Tom Holland. Sounds like a blast,
huh?(Beechwood)
The Mirror Has Two Faces (PG-
13) Okay, I know I'll catch a lot of
heat for admitting and suggesting
this film as a pick. I don't mind,
though, because ‘The Mirror Has
T wo Faces" works. It's sentimental,
sorrowful and very funny. Barbra
Streisand directs and plays the main
character, a lonely but passionate
English professor who longs for true
romance Her beautiful but bitchy
sister (Mimi Rogers) sets her up with
Jeff Bridges, a lorely math profes
sor who wants a mate for compan
ionship, not sex
The two get married under the
agreement that sex will not be a fea
tured factor. Streisand is so desper
ate for a husband that she goes
along with this for a while This
premise may seem far-fetched, but
it work, well in the film. The scenes
between the uncomfortable Bridges
and Streisano ore genuinely funny,
especially in their bedroom. The
story not only nyolves marriage re
lations, but problems between fam
ily. too, like the mum (Lauren Bacall)
and the brother-in-law (Pierce
Brosnan). The fine performances
from the supporting cast strength
ens what's already in tact.
Streisand's metamorphosis from
ugly duckling to super-confident
beauty is a bit corny, but all the
mushy stuff aside, this is a well-
made film about love, sex and
beauty. When I saw the previews for
this, I knew I'd hate it. Luckily, I was
wrong. Bring a relative to the theater
over the holidays, and check it out.
