Chimera (Atomic Music Hall) Their
new album on Grass Records is
called Earth Loop, and it’s a pop rock
record that takes both those words
very seriously. They're Irish, no less.
Jucifer (40 Watt) Maybe tonight, be
cause they're playing with Aftermath,
Jucifer can pull off some of the
scratching/hip hop stuff they secretly
want to incorporate into the post-punk
maelstrom that is the normal Jucifer
set. Regardless, they're great.
King Daddy Zeb (DT's Down Un
der) Bluesy piano-based New Or-
leans-style boogie woogie.
Greg Klyma (High Hat) Klyma is a
singer/songwriter from Buffalo, N.Y.
He fronts a folk-blues-rock band
called Stone Church, and they have
a new record called Mmnm! Pie that
should be out Dec. 14. One track fea
tures James Quill Smith (ol Dr. John
and Three Dog Night) on slide guitar.
Tonight Klyma will be playing solo, in
cluding many of his own songs, plus
some others by Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil
Young, Merle Haggard and more.
Mayhem (40 VYatt) Playing with Af
termath and Jucifer.
Christie McCarthy (Washington
Street Tavern) McCarthy is a recent
transplant here. She's got an amaz
ing voice and a real gift for folky
songwriting. She's playing every Mon
day at the Tavern, and you can see
Yer Goody on Page 14 for more raves.
10 p.m.
Mint (Atomic Music Hall) Drums +
guitars + samples = Mint. According
to the band i'self, Mint is kinda heavy,
but natural-sounding (even with
samples); and nothing like Ministry—
more positive overall. Playing with
Grass Records' Chimera.
Vailejn (High Hat) Latin flavored
rock'n'roll from Austin, Tex. Three of
the bandmembers are brothers, and
the word on the street is pretty good.
Tuesday,
December 3
Breathianes (40 Watt) Airy, atmo
spheric music from the imprcv team of
John Miley and Jamie Dc’’ j, with
ex-Lenny vocalist Elissa Hadley han
dling vocal duties.
The Fountains (High Hat) Smolder
ing folk, country and straght-ahead rock
Mi Cost (City Ba) A just-for-fun project
from members of Brides of Jesus, Phal
Phive and other local bands.
Mile Zero (DT's Down Under) This
is the brand new band that has arisen
out of the ashes of the Nathan
Sheppard Band. Matthew White, Tom
McNeiH and Mike Rizzi (all from the
NSB) are joined by Andy Ingalls (ex-
Good Cows) for a full-on rock project
that will have them playing a ton of
their own material plus some obscure
covers like Yo La Tengo and the Vel
vet Underground.
The Palletjacks (High Hat) Twangy
pop songs that wak the line between
rock and very loud country.
The Rubber Experiment (Atomic
Music Hall) The band has a brand new
‘official' cassette, wherein the material
veers confidently from wah-wah rock ter
ritory like Girls Against Boys to a dark
place where Primus (on an improv kick)
is brooding about the apocalypse. Ring
leader Nikki Shapiro’s ‘solo’ recordings
on the tape range from Shaft theme old-
school grooves to airy piano noodlings
to near-techo stuff to dark sound loops
that would make Beck proud. See ar
ticle on Page 15.
Tangent (Atomic Music Hall) So any
way, ! was walking along the Shelbywlle
Highway with an onion tieo to my oelt
— which was the style at the time —
and I saw a nickel on the ground only
back then we called it a ‘Five-Penny’
even though those nickels were worth
more than a quarter by today's stan
dards. So I pick up the nickel and no
sooner do I grab it than I find myself
walking along the Shelbyville Highway
with an onion tied to my belt again —
which was the style at the time.
TUmstyle (Atomic Music Hall) Funk
rock.
Vein (40 Watt) Vein plays about half
instrumentals, and is composed of
two guitarists and a female drummer/
vocalist. The guitar work is pretty in
teresting; there's not much ‘dueling’
— it's more like a layered cacophony.
They go from dissonant to achingly
beautiful, but never try to jar your
senses b, leaping into anything too
quickly — it's all a building process. I
like ‘ern.
Wild Kingdom (No Where Bar) Fea
turing Wade Hester.
