THE JAY-WHO?: As most of you are aware,
the Jayhawks quietly called it quits close to a year
ago after the departure of singer/guitarist Mark
Olsen, having accrued massive debt with their
label, American Recordings,
and mainly because they were
just a little tired with what
Seemed to be widespread in
difference to their music
within the business. Lucicy for
us, then, that the remaining
members (Gary Louris, Marc
Perlman, Tim O'Reagan and
Karen Grotberg) decided to
regroup way back in March,
with plans to record after ev
eryone took a little break (re:
Golden Smog, and hopefully
some of you caught Louiis' and fellow Smog
member Kraig Johnson's surprise appearance at
the 40 Watt a few weeks ago). The band, who
will most likely re-name themselves, are currently
recording up in Minneapolis with Wilco/Son Volt/
Superchunk producer Brian Paulson, with a pro
jected release date for early '97.
CLIMB UPWARD, CLIMB ONWARD: Six
String Drag, who recently inked a deal with Steve
Earle's Nashville-based E-Squared label, just got
out of the studio with Mr. Earle, who twisted
the knobs for this major la
bel debut. Little by little. Six
String have become some
thing of a presence in this
town (and several others
dotting the Southern land
scape), mainly thanks (at
least Athens-wise) to the
booking tenacity of one
Tony Eubanks at the High
Hat. Congrats to Six String
guitarist/vocalist/songwriter
Kenny Roby who just got
hitched up in Raleigh, NC.
Expect their alb 1 ’m and the requisite world domi
nation soon.
SERENDIPITY, INDEED: Good God. Every
once in a while you hear a voice that makes you
stand up (or, perhaps, sit down) and just reflect.
Christie McCarthy possesses such a voice.
McCarthy is a recent Athens transplant and has

whiled away her Monday evenings this past
month playing at the Washington Street Tavern.
Consider, then, your next Monday evening (Dec.
2 to be exact) spoken for. McCarthy will be per
forming around 10 p.m., and, quite frankly, you
don't want to be left out of this much longer.
The cassette that formed my introduction to Ms.
McCarthy was maoe up of 5 songs that are fea
tured on her upcoming independent CD Seren
dipity, which, if these songs are any indication, should
be amazing. There's a palpable acoustic texture to
these songs, with enough atmospherics to remind
me of k.d. langls ingenue , and then there's that
voice: dulcet, golden, sort of Christine McVie/Emily
Saliers hybrid. But maybe you
don'* need reference points: just
go. You can also dial up her web
page at www.christie.com. Thank
me later.
HAMMERING SO HARD:
Atlanta's The Union (in addition
to contributing a downright
amazing track to our 1996 Flag
pole Christmas Album) have just
put out what might just cement
tnem as the best bana in At
lanta (Jeez, where's my soap
box.). Their latest release. In Ter
minus, GA 1997, on Ichiban's
I.M.F.OVBullsitter Records fol
lows up their self-titled Grass
Records release from two years
ago, and, you must know this,
this album is durn near brilliant.
The whole project was helmed by Steve Albini, with
some additional vocals recorded by David Barbe (who
also mixed those songs). Oriyiiially, the bulk of the
band's influences were more or less obvious (Squir
rel Bait, early Lemonheads, Naked Raygun), but suf
fice to say that the past two years (with God knows
how many drummers) have turned this band into a
formidable quartet.
AND FINALLY: If you have any news or info
for Yer Goody, contact me all day Wednesdays
at (706) 549-9523, or write me at PO Box 1027,
Athens, GA 30603.

THE RETURN OP JOE BARNES
After an absence from the Athens stage of more than a decade, pianist
extraordinare Joe Barnes has joined forces with drummer Randy Durham
and bassist Paul “Crumpy" Edwards to form the "Sacred Aliens." The group
has begun playing Barnes' melodic instrumentals in local dubs and will be
appearing at Allen's on Saturday, Nov. 30. (Photo by Dan Johnson)
