ing factor with many people
There are plenty of people in town who believe in
the Old Black Dog and buy there even though they
can get a 20 percent discount at the University of Geor
gia, she said, paying tribute to the stores loyal cus
tomers and to other supporters such as The Georgia
Review and the University of Georgia Press.
Ms. Long pointed out that competition comes not
just from the chain bookstores but also from other kinds
of sellers: grocery stores, mail order and book clubs,
to name a few She cited a recent Publisher's Weekly
survey finding ihat 50 percent of books in America to
day are sold through such other outlets, leaving the
other 50 percent to be split among the chains and the
independent booksiores
Ms. Long cited the thin one-percent profit margin
typical of the bookselling business as impetus for the
drive toward volume selling and as another deterrent
to her willingness to assume ownership of the Old Black
Dog
"I love it." she said, "and if the profit margin were
higher, I would do it.”
Ms. Long, who said she spent many a sieepless night
trying to decide whether or not to buy the Old Black Dog.
is convinced that her decision against it was the right one.
"Last weekend I was in a book warehouse in At
lanta. she said. They had copies of Phil Williams's
book for $2.99. I have to pay many times that just to
get the book in our store They had Warren Leamcn's
book for a dollar If I needed any reminder cf what I
would be up against, tnat did it. You couldn't have or
chestrated it any better for me.” (PMc)

Complaint: Stop
Calling Me Shithead
Trey Thompson ran against John Barrow fa the Dis
trict 4 Commission seat in the November General Elec
tion, Thompson mailed out a different brochure every' day
toward the end of the campaign, attacking Barrow and
inviting citizens to call Thompson at home, to participate
in his campaign
Rolf Roley. a friend and supporter of John Barrow, is a
79-year-old engineer, a survive’ of throat cancer who had j
hisva rc x i erroved 20 years ago and since then speaks
with the aid of an electronic device held against a hole in
his windpipe.
Roley was infijuated by Thompson's attacks on his I
friend, and he left messages on the candidate's telephone
answering machine, calling him in the process a "shithead"
and suggesting that because of his negative campaign
Thompson deserved to lose, a, as Roley put it. to be "blown
out of the water.”
After a number of such calls from Roley. the last one
coming the morning after the electior which Thompson
lost to Barrow by a sizable margin, Thompson told Roley
to step calling him a he would have Roley put in jail.
Roley called Thompson back and told him. “If you
think you can do it. go ahead."
Thompson filed a complaint against Roley in
Magistrate's Court fa telephone harassment ana terrais-
tic threats, and the two squared off last Thursday befae
Judge Michael Coleman, himself no stranger to political
name-calling Local attorney Jeff Gilley represented Roley:
Thompson represented himself.
Gilley argued throughout the hearing that Roley was
exercising his Constitutionally protected freedom of speech
in the context of a political campaign Judge Coleman
constantly tried to confine the issue to one of telephone
harassment, which the Judge said was pretty much an
open and shut case that should be bound over fa trial
in State Court Thompson claimed that he had no idea
that Roley was a 79-year-old man and said that the
electronic device heightened the threatening tone of
Roley's comments.
The highlight of the hearing came when Gilley insisted
that Thompson read aloud a dictionary definition of
“shithead." After first refusing, but then being directed to
do so by Judge Coleman, Thompson read aloud
.shithead a shitface a stupid, confused, and blunder
ing person; a fuckup....”
Judge Coleman seemed ready to bind the case ova
fa trial when Gilley succeeded in getting Thompson to
agree that he would drop charges if Roley would promise
not to call him anymore After the case was dismissed
Thompson went over to Roley expecting to shake his hand
and gain his apology, but Roley refused to give Thomp-
; soneitha.
Corrmssoner Barrow observed the proceedings from
j the rear of the courtroom but did rot participate in the
| hearing (PMc)
