NOVew&e/z. 27, rwt, E
and Corkscrew. Gemini wouldn't be at all special if it
didn't have two cars racing at the same time. There is
a red car and a blue car, and they always leave the
station at exactly the same time. Blue always is just
about one car ahead the whole ride, but at the very
end red pulls ahead cn one of the curves and wins
the race. When it was first built, Gemini was the fast
est and highest roller coaster in the world. The most
fun thing about Gemini is that the whole ride you can
have your hands out giving people high fives. (My
uncle Jim came with us on this trip, and I really wanted
him to ride this with me because then I could tell people
that “Jim and I" rode ‘'Gemini").
Disaster Transport is an indoor bobsled-type
coaster. On a bobsled coaster, the cars don't run on a
track, but instead are made more like sleds to run on
a bob sled course. This coaster was pretty much fun,
and I think my mom could have done it, because it’s
pretty much like the Mine Train ride she had done
earlier that day, only in the dark. Nothing special here.
Wild Cat is an enjoyable little ride. It's the kind of
thing I d like to have in my back yard. It was designed
by Anton Schwartzkopf. of Germany, who designed the
Mind Bender at Six Flags Over Georgia. Wild Cat is a
fairly small coaster, and only four people fit in each
train. These small cars accentuate the feeling of the drops,
and even though they aren't very high a steep, you can
still lose ycxr stomach. It's a quick, zippy ride with a very
sharp jerk at the end that really hurt my neck.
Iron Dragon, another Ron Toomer creation, was
las' I was somehow able to persuade my mom, who
hates roller coasters, to ride it with me. As we were
slowly pulled by the chain over the first lift, she
screamed so loud that I'm sure Raptor riders on the
other side of the park were wincing. She hated the
first hill, but loved all the curves and swoops through
the trees and the trip through the mist at the end.
After all that wonderful riding, it was time to go
home. We drove through Kentucky, Tennessee and
back to Georgia, where I finally spent a night in my
own bed.
The next morning, I woke up, said goodbye to my
mom, and then I was off to Busch Gardens in Tampa
to ride Montu, the new inverted coaster. But that's a
different story!

• Sarah Pattison’s Third
Annual Georgia Days Calendar
is on sale. Ms. Pattison began
this project four years ago for a
calendar of Martha's Vineyard. She had the idea to create this calendar and said she would
have no self-respect if she did not do it. Raising money by selling her paintings and doing odd
jobs to fund the project, she realized this creative process was done primarily for self-satisfac
tion — having the calendars out there for the love of doing it.
Using it as a medium for expressing her perspective on life, Ms. Pattison has rediscovered
what we all have been told at one time or another: do what you love to do.
This year the Georgia Days 1997 Calendars will be available at Frontier, Old Black Dog
(but hurry), Art Masters (in Watkinsville) or directly from the artist by calling 613-0851.
