Sylvester Stallone is back in an
underdog hero role in this action/
thriller. Sly plays a disgraced
head of the EMS who risks his life
to save the survivors of an under
water tunnel explosion in New
York. Dan Hedaya and Amy
Brenneman also star. It seems that
the ‘disaster movie” with heroes
narrowly escaping balls of fire is
this year's trend. Not quite
“Rocky," but better than “Rhine
stone." (Beechwood)
The English Patient
(R) Adapted from the novel by
Michael Ondaatje, this film version
is a heavy story about a Hungar
ian (Ralph Fiennes) working in the
Tunisian desert for the British just
before the opening acts of WWII.
After surviving a fiery crash, he
lives out his last days in a make
shift "hospital” in a Tuscan mon
astery. As his Canadian nurse
(Juliette Binoche) tends his
wounds, he recalls his love affair
(with Kristin Scott Thomas) and
his misadventures with both sides
of the War (especially the shifty
Willem Dafoe). The use of images,
irony, symbolism and metaphor
are all firmly in place, but the ac
tions of all the characters are con
fusing and awkward. I left feeling
as if I didn't really get to know
enough about anyone. ‘The En
glish Patient’ requires lots of pa
tience. so make sure you’re in the
right mindset. (Beechwood)
First Wives Club (PG-13) Three
selfish husbands leave their wives
for younger, vivacious bimbos.
The three wives, played by Goldie
Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane
Keaton devise a drunken scheme
of revenge and justice. There are
some lighilv funny cameos and
one liners, but compared to the
big films out now. this seems limp.
Look for Keaton in the upcoming
“Marvin’s Room.” (Beechwood)
The Ghost And The Darkness
(R) A true tale about man-eating
lions, British Imperialism, hunting,
dirty hospitals and condescend
ing conversations between rich
Europeans and native East Afri
cans. Things get very tense to
ward the finale, but watching
Kilmer can be a chore. Starring
Val Kilmer. Michael Douglas and
John Kam (Beechwood)
Girls Town (R) Bruklin Harris,
Lili Taylor, Denise Hernandez and
Anna Grace star in this realistic
story made by Athens/New York
filmmaker Jim McKay about inner
city high school seniors graduat
ing into the adult world. Check it
out; the fraternity crowd will be out
of town. (Georgia Theatre)
High School High (PG-13)
SNL star Jon Lovitz tries and tries
to teach some exaggerated urban
steieotypes in school, but the to
talitarian principal (Louise
Fletcher) and the gang leader
(Guillermo Diaz, the boyfriend in
‘Girls Town") keep dissin' him.
Luckily, Tia Carrere takes leave
from the M&Ms commercials to
flirt with the disheveled Lovitz.
This is crap, but it's fun.
(Beechwood)
Jingle All the Way
(PG) As far as holidry films for
kids go, this may do the trick.
However, children are usually
smarter tnan we think, so they may
see through this Smbad-
Schwarzenegger Xmas trek. Basi
cally. The Kindergarten Cop has
to buy a Turbo Man for his son, i.e.
Christmas equals consumerism.
(Mall Inside)
Kingpin (PG-13) Woody
Harrelson, Bill Murray and Randy
Quaid star in this film about a rub
ber-handed bowler and his Amish
friend's quest to win a big-time
bowling tournament. Brought to
you by the same guys who made
“Dumb and Dumber." If you liked
that one, you’ll like this one even
more. It's good clean fun for any
one not offended by gratuitous
vomiting scenes and jokes about
bull semen. (Alps)
Last Man Standing (R) Ban-
terer °aul Trudeau pointed out
how cJd it was to see Christopher
Walken as an Irish gangster, in
stead of the usual Italian type.
This, unfortunately, is one of the
biggest twists in the film. Bruce
Willis emulates Clint Eastwood in
this violent, quasi Western/gang
ster story set in the Prohibition-era
West Not bad, but not exciting.
(Alps)
Lone Star (R) Great film from di
rector John Sayies about a boroer
town in Texas with a murky, inter
woven past. After a body is found
in the desert, Sheriii Sam Deeds
(Chris Cooper) reluctantly inves
tigates a 40 year series of events
that could possibly incriminate his
legendary father, Sheriff Buddy
Deeds (Matthew McConaughey).
With flashbacks to the 1950s
where mean old Kris Kristofferson
ran the show, and overlapped
family situations from the Anglo,
Mexican, Native American and
African-American characters, this
story succeeds with a richness
and balance rare in the theaters
these days. (Beechwood)
The Mirror Hat Two Facet
(PG-13) Barbra Streisand directs
and stars in this slightly mushy
story about sex, beauty, love and
self-confidence. Where “First
Wives Club" is a cute spoof on
marriage fiascoes, this film is ef
fective, personal and amusing. A
fine cast featuring Lauren Bacall,
Mimi Rogers and Pierce Brosnan
support a strong love story.
(Beechwood)
101 Dalmatian! (G) Disney
keeps cranking them out, don't
they? Glenn Close is the evil, high-
heeled, fur-wearing Cruella Di Vil,
and she ‘Wants those puppies!!"
Jeff Daniels and Joely Richardson
play Pongo's and Perdy's keepers.
I fondly remember the animated
1961 version, and honestly, it's
much better.(Beechwood)
Phenomenon
(PG-13) Cute film starring John
Travolta, Kyra Sedgewick and
Robert Duvall. The small town
. can’t quite accept that Travolta,
an all-around good guy. can pre
dict earthquakes, move objects
and learn Portuguese in 20 min
utes... all with his new phenom
enal intelligence. Look for Travolta
as another spiritual character in
the upcoming “Michael," too.
(Alps)
Ransom (R) Although this Ron
Howard thriller is a huge produc
tion with almost overly-dramatic
acting from Mel Gibson, Rene
Russo and Gary Sinise, it works.
A self-made millionaire challenges
the kidnappers directly after they
swipe his son Lili Taylor and
Delroy Lir.do are great, and the
suspense during the last third of
“Ransom" .s mighty fine (Mail
Outside)
Romeo And Juliet
(R) Claire Canes and Leo

Cappuccino clearly have talent
and deserve better than this. Even
with the lavish production, the use
of original text and the star-stud
ded cast, this is a chore to watch.
Shakespeare's tragic love story
looks so unnatural in modern for
mat, even though he himself in
cluded sex, drugs and violence in
the original. (Mall Outside)
Set It Off (R)
Four inner-city girls decide to
take back what the “system’ stole
from them by resorting to crime.
The actresses (Latifah, Pinkett,
Fox and Elise) are talented, but
they cant salvage the unrealistic
and glamorizing aoproach to
crime and justice set off by rap
video director F. Gary Gray. Good
cast, bad story. (Mall Outside)
Sleeper* (R) With Dustin
Hoffman and Robert DeNiro help
ing out, a pack of rascals, led by
Brad Pitt, seek revenge against a
brutal reform school guard,
played by Kevin Bacon. Heavy,
dramatic and quite long. I'm not
sure if the reform school scenes
are exaggerated, but director
Barry Levinson insists that "Sleep
ers" is ‘based on a true story."
(Mall Inside)
Space Jam (PG)
Michael.Jordan and the cast of
Loony Toons shoot hoops to save
the world. What's next? Maybe
Ren and Stimpy will fight crime
alongside Pete Rose, or Droopy
will prevent WWIII alongside John
McEnroe. This film is fun for the
kids, but for quality animation,

FLICKER
Enough about all these big releases in big cinemas. There
are some truly unique advantages to living in Athens, and the
creative visual arts scene is a big one. You may not notice, but
there is evidence of local art everywhere you look: on business
signs, on restaurant walls, on calendars, on ONTV, everywhere.
For local filmmakers, Ricker is a visible outlet, an ongoing
medium through which any film locally made may achieve ex
posure, and ultimately praise and/or criticism. Angie Grass has
managed the Flicker workshops and screenings for years and
established the 30 minute “Best of Flicker' on Channel 40’s
ONTV.
This season's screening Monday night will feature some of
Grass's newer works as well as several other artists: in particu
lar, live short films from Jonathan Raily. Four of theses are a
series of “very Zen" works titled “Films on Tao." Grass empha
sized to me that anyone may still submit anything for screening
up to Dec. 8. All films are 8mm and Super 8 for the 40 Watt
screening. Videos are acceptable for the TV episodes. For in
formation, call Daily Groceries at 548-1732 and ask for Angie.
As with fair college radio stations, Flicker aims to expose
and promote everything, good and bad. The celebration of the
craft and creativity of film is v/hat Flicker is all about. Support
local art and check it out.
