December a
Ashtray (DTs Down Under) They're a
power tno from Gainesville. Carl from
Squat says ‘Ashtray plays shit so funky
they should be arrested." The band is
‘nothing like rock'n'roll and everything
your mama warned you about ‘'NuB said.
Brides of Jesus (High Hat) Music for
anyone who gives a funk.
Brian Burke A No Teflin’ (Allen's)
There’s... uh... *no fellin’" who will join this
Normaltown Flyer for some spinted coun
try-rock tonight.
Grittv Kitty (Atomic Music Hall) While
they're preparing to record and release a
split 7-inch with The Godrays, Gritty Kitty
is also trying to write some new materia!,
playing this show, and will be playing live
on 88.5 FM this Saturday afternoon
(around 2 p.m.). Cool.
Kudzu Jones (Georgia Theatre) Ray
ing a double bill with Second Hand Jive
John S. Hall (of King Missile) (40
Watt) Hali was the pointman for the now
delunct King Missile (who, with their song
"Detachable Penis,’ gave me a chuckle
or two, and with their other song "Martin
Scorcese." actually scared me). He will
be doing some spoken-word performing,
then will be pined by punk rocker Roger
Manning for some King Missile songs. The
two have been on tour together for a wfvle
now. and it sounds like a very cool thing
Roger Manning (40 Wan) Manning
is the ultimate punk rock troubadour. He
plays solo punk-folk-rock like no one
else He was on SST in the early days,
and now he plays socio-political folk
loud enough to raise the dead. Tonight
he'll play a set of his own barn-burning
punk-folk in addition to backing up
John S. Hall from King Missile.
Matters of the Hemisphere (Atomic
Music Hall) This is a new band in town,
with an even newei d'ummer since
Kincaidls Ryan Lewis had to step down
because ol his many Kindercore/Kincaid
obligations. The Masters will have a demo
out in January, detailing their plans for a
universal takeover utilizing the pop song
as a weapon. Also, the band and their pals
wiS be involved in a championship kickball
game on the UGA campus (on the Myers
quad field) at 2 p.m. Sunday. Those crazy
kids....
Second Hand Jive (Georgia Theatre)
Playing with Kudzu Jones.
Sprout (DTs Down Under) Not to be
confused with the Fuzzy Sprouts, mind
you.
S wingstreet (Jittery Joe's in Five Points)
Jazz from 7:30-10 p.m. It$ in a smoke-
free zone, and there will be tasty goodies
available for your perusal.
Thursday,
December 5
Addison Blue (40 Watt) Jerky, angular,
in-yer-face angst-pop.
Day By the River (High Hat) What's
cool about DBR is that even though they
have enough iazz-school talent to fill up
the Omni, their grooves first and foremost
serve the song. See their new CD, % for
examples.
The Healers (Georgia Bar) Chicago-
ancf Texas-styte blues, starting at 10 p.m.
May (Atomic Music Hall) Swirly, effects-
laden low-key pop. Pairing them up with
The Quiet Men was a swell idea.
Mrs. Atkins (40 Watt) Ah rock from the
gut Just when you think they're all too
weird, they come back to "normal’ terri-
tery, only to get weird all over again.
The Quiet Men (Atomic Music Hall)
Even though they've been a band for sev
eral years now, this newest incarnation ol
The Quiet Men is just a few months old.
That’s why I was pleasantly surprised re
cently to see how flat-out great these guys
are live. They slam through their dreamy
Euro pop songs like they've been doing it
fcr ten years (yet are still invigorated by
the whole thing), and their half-smirking
sense of irony reminds me not of the cur
rent crop of droney British bands, but their
musical grandfathers: The Sex Pistols.
Nathan Sheppard (DTs Down Under)
Strong, song oriented fofc rock.
Space Voyage Ahem.. (Washington
Street Tavern) There are elements of a
whole cosmic stew of things that culmi
nate in SVA's particular sound. They pretty
much defy categorization, and thatls a
good thing.
The Toasters (Georgia Theatre) These
guys are like the Rl%DMC ol ska music.
Through thick and thin, the lean years and
- the glory days, The Tipsters have kept ska
alive. They started Moon Ska Records,
and have more or less helped create an
entire counterculture through the label and
their constant touring. Their new record,
Hard Band For Dead, is another in a long
line of solid records for this band. They’re
asgcodasitgets.
Friday,
December 6
Bullhead Clap (Atomic Music Hali)
Metal/rap like Anthrax^ Tm the Man’ (only
angrier), from Atlanta. They've got a new
CD-EP called From Over Yonder.
Brian Burke & No Tellin’ (Allen’s)
There's no tellin' who will join this
Normaltown Flyer for some spinted coun
try-rock tonight.
Disposables (Galaxy 500) Country/
bluegrass from Lexington, Ga.
Gravy (High Hat) A blues band from Ala
bama.
DJ. Hurricane A Sniper Unit (40
Watt) This is the beginning of what will
become a regular hip-hop night at the 40
Watt. Brought to us by Soul Slingin' Sistaz
Productions, the first Monday in January
will see DJ. Hurricane (of the Beastie
Boys) begin a weekly hip-hop night at the
Watt. Tonight, Hurricane and his band
Sniper Unit will play live, followed by an
hour ol Hurricane spinning other hip-hop
records. Other performed on the bill in
clude DJ Seize and Prince Paul (of De La
Soul).
Josh Joplin (DTs Down Under) Sort of
middle-period R.E.M.-type stuff. They're
re-releasing the Projector Head CD to in
clude some interactive CD-ROM goodies,
and you can read more on Page 19.
Mishap (Georgia Theatre) Fun-fi!!ed
song-based acoustic rock'n'roll.
The Rubber Experiment (Gaiaxy
500) A heavier, weirder, decidedly less
Primus-fikc version of what used to be
Rubbernubby, featuring some current
Volard members. They've got a swell
new self-titled full-length cassette you
