D J. Scientist (40 Watt) DJ Scientist has
waked with Queen Latifah (among many
others) and has been known to set Beads
on fire (literally) and to sometimes even
spin with his toes (ouch!). Its tricky, /all.
This is part of Unity; A Night of Hip-Hop
ana Grooves from Soul Slingin’ Sistaz Pro
ductions.
The Simpletons (Lower/s) Rock cov
ers and originals.
Vein (Galaxy 500) Lush, atmospheiic.
non-droning 4AD-type stuff - only they
can rock when they want to. The song
they've had on 90.5 recently has been in
and out of my brain fa weeks now Keep
an eye on this one, folks.
Saturday,
December 7
Apenas Atones (same place as last
party at 227 Oconee St.) One Love United
Productions and UGA International Club
present DJ’d Latino salsa music, plus the
live show Apenas Alenas brings (and this
will be a farewell party fa lead vocalist
Nicki, as he heads back to Sao Paulo,
Brazil, soon after). The party starts at 3
p.m„ and you can find the party by going
down Oconee Street with Buckhead
Beach on your right: the party is across
the street on your left, and the fun starts
at 3 p.m.
Atari Teenage Riot (40 Watt) Lo-fi
high-impact noise. They have some ma
terial out on Digital Hardcore Rscadings,
and were just recently signed by Mike D.
(Beastie Boys) to Grand Royale Recads.
The Backsliders (High Hat) Great,
song-based insurgent country from the
Caroliias. They've got a new EP on Mam
moth Records (which, aside from. Seven
Mary Three, almost never steps wrongly),
and tonight they're playing with Six String
Drag.
Karry Comtek Jr. & His Funk Band
(Classic Center) I was initially thrown for
a loop upon hearing Mr. Connick's new
record, Star Turtle (a concept album
about... you guessed it... a turtle), but
seeing that he is touring with a funk band
brings it all into sharper focus. While I'm
sure Connick will dabble in his picture-
perfect young Sinatra material (and for
give me fa enjoying Connick more than I
do Sinatra), this funk stu" hat he's into
now, and it’s a whoL * oallgame. On
another note: is it just me, or in Indepen
dence Day did he just basically play
"Goose’ to Will Smith's Tom Cruise 7 Oh,
never mind.
The Qodrays (Atomic Music Hall)
Smart, fun indie pop from ex-members of
Small Factory. They have made records
fa Teen Beat, have just released a new
recad on Caroline Records, and have a
singlowecord coming out soon on the
Pop Narcotic label. Their newest is called
Songs For TV'Stars, and it’s pretty swell.
Also watch fa a split 7-rich with our own
Gritty Kitty on Kindercore Recads soon.
Kilgore TriKit (DTs Down Under) One
band member tuid me they're sorta Ike
the Allman Brothers meets Stevie Wonder
— a little funk, a little gioove and some
Southern rock. The/re a five-piece, utiliz
ing an agankeyboard player, and a six-
string bassist.
Kincaid (Atomic Music Hall) Indie pop.
Raying with former Small Factory mem
bers, The Godrays.
Phat Chicken (DTls Down Under) Psy
chedelic funk from Tucker, Ga. They play
originals and covers by the Dead, Wide
spread Panic, Eric Clapton and more.
Tim Reynolds A TR3 (Geagia The
atre) Reynolds is the featured guitarist on
a!! the Dave Matthews Band recadings,
and either Matthews has rubbed off on
Reynolds in a big way, a vice versa. TR3
has a CD they released last year called
Light Up Ahead, which bears more than
a passing resemblance to the sort ol
funky-groove rock songs that Matthews
has recently made popular. (Matthews
sings on one song, actually.) Reynolds is
obviously a heck of a guitar wizard, and
it's rather ironic that he and Harry Connick
Jr. (with his funk band) are playing in Ath
ens on the same night, because I think
the two would have a lot to talk about.
Three sets starting at 10 p.m.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock cov
ers and originals.
Six String Drag (High Hat) Down home
country roc 1 ' that will simply knock you on
yer butt These guys have fans like Steve
Earle (who recently signed them to his E-
Squared label) and Son \felt, so you know
they're the real deal. I know plenty of mu
sicians who art afraid to play after Six’
Stnng Drag has left the stage. They're that
good.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
(40 Watt) They're reinventing the post
punk landscape with bell bottoms and a
Rolling Stones fixation. They floored me
the first time i saw 'em, and that seems to
be the general consensus. Their new
record on Matador is called Now l Got
Worry Read mae on Page 17.

Randy Andersen Sextet (City Bar)
Jazz standards and originals.
Blue Stockings (Atomic Music Hall)
Two acoustic guitars, a couple of voices,
original songs and a newly-added set of
drums. This will be an electric set.
Kmg Daddy Zeb (DTs Down Unda)
Bluesy piano-based New Orieans-styfe
boogie woogie.
RaB (NC) (High Hat) Demented, throw-
down, tear-up-the-walls-and-set-yourself-
on-fire country rock.
Tone Deao Radio (Atomic Music Hall)
The band has gone through some line-up
changes recently (with Bayon Forte go
ing off to New York and all). Witt) a new
violin player firmly in-tow, Tone Deaf Ra
dio is now a three-piece, sounding some
thing akin to the Dirty Three meets Mid
night Oil. They've recorded some new
mataial so good that they're probably
going tc axap a lot of the oldenlcad-
ings theyjiad saved fa their d^ut CD.
Ah, perfectkr'sm.
Vein (Atomic Music Hall) Lush, atmo
spheric, non-droning 4AD-type stuff —
only they can rock when they wan! to. The
song they've had on 90.5 recently has
been in and out of my brain fa weeks now.
Keep an eye or. this one, folks.

Alta Peak (Washington Street Tavan)
Playing Grateful Dead covers all night
long.
Blue Stockings (City Bar) Two acous
tic guitars, a couple of voices, original
songs a d a newly-added set of drums.
This will be an acoustic set.
Harry Carey (High Hat) These guys ex
pertly maneuver through a minefield hold
ing big '70s guitar rock, comic relief & la
Sp.nal Tap, and the best of the ’senous’
punk/metal bands of today — and they
come out unscraped' They're a hilarious
blast ot white-knuckle guitar Bailings and
half-kidding metal poses, and whatfc more
— they rock.
Hayride (High Hat) I love the new pop
direction these guys are moving towards,
and personally think their show recently
with Hall of Famer Jeff Matthews joining
in was among my favorite Hayride mo
ments period Thai being said, these guys
have a whole arsenal of new material, and
it's sure to rock yer world. Read more on

Laxy (40 Watt) They were labelmates with
Magnapop right befae Priority Records
closed its rock division. Tonight the/re
playing with the excellent Seely.
Mi Com (DPs Down Under) This is a
loosely aganized side-project fa mem
bers of Brides of Jesus, Phat Ptwe and
some otha local gnx ps. There s no setlist
and really no telling what they're likely to
play. Check it out.
Ralph Roddonberry A Second
Hand (No Where Bar) Second Hand is a
loose conglomeration of musicians
Roddenberry coaxed into playing songs
he wrote.' asked him why not just call the
CD ’Ralph Roddenberry,’ a no he said,
basically, because he always wanted to
be part of a band (as opposed to a solo
musician). Newts his chance.
Sooty (40 Watt) Mixing tribal beats with
swirling, atmosphenc vocals and guitar
work, Seely is like a 4AD band that rocks.
They use voices Ike instruments and in
struments like voices — its a beautiful
thing. Their new record (which is actually
a reworking and rerecording of their first
recad with Tortoise's John McEntire a! the
helm) is out now on Too Pure/American
Recordings.
