ANOTHER
FRIEND GONE
Last week, Andre Nuci Phillips was found
dead in hi" apartment from an apparently self-
inflicted gunshot wound. He was in local bands
Koncak and Enboil and was among the most
gifted musicians this town has known. Al
though Koncak only played a handful of shows,
those in attendance knew they were seeing
something truly special as Nuci flailed away
on his 12-string guitar, oblivious to the love
there was in the room for him. He was a stu
dent, a musician, a son, and a friend. He will
be missed.
It is anticipated that a memorial service will
be held in Athens in the coming weeks, but at
presstime no firm date had been set. (Marc
Pilvinsky)

Student Station Off The Air For
Studio Renovation
90.5FM, WUOG, the student run campus radio station, will be off the air until Jan. 6,1997,
due to studio renovations. 90.5FM signed on in 1972 and, for the most part, has broadcast 24
hours a day for the past 25 years from the original studios. Thousands of University of Georgia
students have graced the studios of 90.5FM, exposing UGA to innovative, independent new
music as well as news, sports and public affairs programming. Unfortunately, Athens and the
surrounding area will be without their “old friend” 90.5FM over this holiday break. But they will
return on Jan. 6 and look forward to visiting with you over the air or in their newly renovated
home on the fifth floor of Memorial Hall. (WUOG press release, in case you couldn’t tell)

Severely Burned In An Accident
Acton Jackson, who will turn nine years
old this month and is the son of painter
Robin Jackson and musician Will Jackson,
was seriously burned in a recent accident.
He .a undergoing restorative surgery in the
Augusta Burn Center, and the prognosis is
good for his complete recovery. Although
his mother’s job provides insurance, the
procedures involved are tremendously ex
pensive, and co-payment costs alone are
staggering.
The Oglethorpe Elementary School PTC
has set up the Acton Jackson Pund to help
with these hills, and contributions to the fund
can be made at anv NationsBank location.

GUEST EDITOR'S NOTES
Flagpole Could Have Done A Better Job
I need to express my disappointment with
Flagpole's election coverage this year. First, although I
realize the magazine focuses mainly on local issues and
candidates. I kept waiting for coverage of Green Party
candidate Ralph Nader. Many of us re!/ on alternative
publications such as Flagpole to enlighten us with options
that are all but ignored in the mainstream journals.
For the first time in over 20 years of voting, I found
myself with a viable write-in candidate. Rom the environ
ment to health care, the Green Party platform and Ralph
j Naders very informative acceptance speech encom
passed the most broadbased spectrum of our fundamental
rights, which are being threatened by corporate irrespon-
■ sibility. A1 least the acknowledgment of this candidate
would have been informative. While this is a simple pro
cess, it can be intimidating if you do not know how.
Secondly, concerning candidates closer to Ixxne, it
appears that we only had choices between the mundane
and the superficial with lame platforms of pure rhetoric.
Who isn't against crime and fa education? At best, we
maybe had a choice between the questionably accept
able and the purely evil. Flagpole did help to identify be
tween the urban sprawl developers and the more pio-
neighborhood candidates (an important issue). But what
about other issues? Fa example, where did the candi
dates stand on the proposal to transpat nu.'ear waste
not only across the state of Geagia but through the heat
of Athens-Clarke County? The potential hazards are jv
fathomabie, and it is ou own taxes that will subsidize this
bailout of an irresponsible nuclear -energy industry.
Where did the candidates stand on the proposed log
ging of the Chatahoochee and Oconee National Forests?
The proximity of these beautiful areas indirectly enhances
our quality of life and mae directly feeds our rivers.
And do any candidates have a stand on the ongoing
sprawl of the University of Geagia 7 In addition to the dev
astation of the River Road area fa its new “East Campus,"
the university that calls itself an environmental leader can
not seem to build enough packing decks fast enough. The
proposed i,200-space parking monstrosity at the old
Tanners bcatio 1 will effectively clog traffic on these al
ready overaowded roads and compromise the vitality of
downtown Athens. In the end, the community will have to
pay fa these problems. Until the university's auioaatic
rule is challenged, we will continue to face mae question
able facilities, such as the Bbcontainment Research Cen
ter Facility being built irresponsibly dose to family hous
ing, classrooms and neighborhoods.
Perhaps next time Flagpole could ask these candi
dates some mae pointed questions rather than granting
100 wads of free space to ramble on about nothing. I
realize Flagpole is not responsible fa our lack of insightful
public officials, but if they ignae our health, safety and
overall well-being, maybe alternatives such as the Green
Party would be more deserving of support.
