out in the country beyond Comer, off GA 281, near
the Broad River, and it gets into watching for mail
boxes and turning down driveways, and if you're seri

OCONEE COUNTY
The Happy Valley Pottery arts collective had
its main Christmas open house last weekend, but it's
open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and by appointment in the evening
hours between now and Christmas Happy Valley has
a large group of clay artists making functional pottery,
mcluaing Jeff Bishoff Kathy and Jerry
Chappelle Flora Eustis Lisa Koch and David
Moak Layton Hall is doing stone carving. In glass

azza To get to Happy Valley, go into Watkinsville off
the new bypass out there; go through town and take
441 South and turn left onto Colham Ferry Road; go
eight miles to Carson Graves Road. Turn right and
Happy Valley is the first mailbox Just follow the blue

On down Colham Ferry Road about 10 miles from
Watkinsville check out Watson Springs Pottery.
Just turn left onto Watson Springs Read, and the pot
tery is about a mile down the road on the right. Signs
will assure that you can t miss it. There you'll find salt-
fired arid wood-fired functional pots by Liz Lurie and
Carey McDonald They're having their first Open
House 9 a.m.-5 p.m Saturday, Dec 7, and Sunday,
Dec. 8. The address is 2111 Watson Springs Rd., ano

Further out 441 past Watkinsville in Bishop is
Second Apple pottery studio, where Barbara
Allen shows off her pottery and jewelry during her
Christmas open house Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday,
Dec. 8: hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days.
And even farther out 441 Geoff Pickett is hav
ing a pottery sale at Farmington Pottery 1700
Salem Rd 9 a m.-5 p m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec
7 & 8. Geoff is a lor .. area potter who specializes
m functional pottery for kitchen and table Turn left
off 441 at the Farmington depot. Go one block
and the road makes a sharp right. Then take
the left fork and Farmington Pottery is
less than a mile down the

Right in Watkinsville
DeWitt Smith is having
a sale Saturday, Dec 7,
“until 5 p.m. I don't put a
starting time, because they
come at daybreak anyway." X
Sunday, Dec. 8, the hours are '
1-5 p.m. DeWitt makes hand
made stoneware pottery and
some porcelain — each piece individu
ally made and one-of-a-kind; mostly functional. He’s
in Watkinsville at 71 Jackson St., off 441 just past the
Highway 15 intersection. You’ll see his sign on the right.

Out Highway 15, four miles south of Watkinsville,
Michael and Peggy Pitts are having a one-day-
only sale 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. Michael and
p eggy are famous in these parts for their functional,
handmade stoneware pottery that has graced many
a table in Athens and beyond. Just to see the abode
of these longtime clay pioneers is worth the short jaunt.
Turn right off 15 onto Elder’s Mill Rd., and you'll find
their house down the road on the right. 769-6318.
OCLETHORPE COUNTY
The Limited Editions group had its open house
last week but is open every day 10 a.m -6 p.m. through
Sunday, Dec. 8 at 3025 Hunters Pointe in Arnoldsville
in Oglethorpe County. (See how you get to explore
the area?) Go out Highway 78 east; after you cross
the Oglethorpe County line, turn left onto Yancy Rd
Go 3.8 miles; dogleg to the left onto Meadow Creek
and then turn right into Hunters Pointe. They've got
Lynette Phillips, pottery; Rainey Gentry
herbal Christmas cards; Flo Gross, watercolors
and jewelry; Don Leddy. functional pottery: Kay
Shukair. handpainted ornaments, Anita
Ammons, landscape oil paintings; Chris

Mary Porter and Beverly Buchanan are
having a studio sale at 824 Boulevard in the studio in
the rear building, the hours are noon- 2 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 6; 1-4 p.m Sunday, Dec. 8; and 1-4 p.m. Sun
day, Dec. 15, or you can call 548-4664 and make an
appointment fa some other time. Mary does those
voluptuous paintings and Beverly does small draw
ings and cutout figures.
Wild Rabbit Pottery is having its Christmas
open house 10 a m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Dec
7 & 8. at the studio downtown at 425 East Hancock
across from the Civic Center Wild Rabbit features the
pottery and crafts of Pat and Carter McCaffrey
and other crafts people from around the U S The
McCaffreys together produce a wide range of beauti
ful and usable pieces from *he kiln in the back of the

And, yes, Rebecca Wood is having a Christ
mas sale 9 a.rn.-5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, right here
in town at 450 Georgia Drive, up the hill off Oconee
Street. If you know Rebecca's work, you know this
means that if you have to. you can wait until Dec 14
to do your Christmas shopping, if you get there in time

the east side, follow Barnett Shoals Road to Whitehall

the woods around daybreak so you can get there hours
