Daylight (R) Well, it is the 20th ad
versary of 'Reeky,' so maybe we should
take it easy on old Sly Stallone This flick
features a pack of panicking New
Yorker motorists stuck in an underwa
ter tunnel after an explosion. After find
ing a way inside, Stallone becomes
trapped, too, and has to improvise. This
action/thriller stuff is predictable and
tired and this is definitely not Sylvester's
best. Directed by Rob Cohen
("Dragonhead"). (Beechwood)
Th© English Patient (R) This roman
tic film about pain, memories and war
has won so much praise in the press
and around here for its elegance,
beauty and complex love story. I don't
get it. The scenery in Tunisia and
Tuscany is stunning, and the perfor
mances are great, especially those from
Juliette Binoche and Willem Dafoe, but
the love story between Ralph Fiennes
and Kristin Scott Thomas was awkward
and unconvincing. This is a long, dra
matic film full of subtle complexities, so
be mentally prepared before entering.
(Beechwood)
First Kid (PG) Sinbad has to protect
(i.e. baby-sit) the President's bratty son.
The two hate each other at first, but
through boxing, dance lessons and
trips to the mall, they grow closer. Ac
tually, this isn't that bad. Sinbad was
certainly better here than in ‘Jingle All
the Way.' Also starring Robert
Guillaume and the red-haired, bearded
guy from TV’s 'thirtysomething' (Alps)
The Ghost And The Darkness (R)
Pretty scary stuff about a bridge builder,
an American hunter, a British railroads
and a village of lion-wary Africans. Val
Kilmer and Michael Douglas are goofs,
but the lions are great. (Beechwood)
Girls Town (R) Girls Town is the de
but feature film from former Athenian
(and co-owner of C-00 Films) Jim
McKay. Though Girls Town is a story
involving such issues as rape, suicide
and self-respect, the director uses hu
mor throughout the film to balance the
overall emotional weight. Girls Town
tells an effective story without the big
Hollywood effects withe.4 the big-
name stars, and without any corporate
sponsorship. (Beechwood)
Jerry Maguire (R) Tom Cruise has
calmed down a bit after
'Mission:lmpossible' and plays a
sports agent who flips out after being
fired, continues representing his star
player, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.,
and falls in love with single mom Renee
Zellweger. Directed by Cameron Crewe
('Singles'). I think some Pete Townsend
tunes are in the soundtrack. (Mall In
side)
Jingle All the Way (PG) It's hard to
sympathize with such a neglectful, ir
responsible father (Schwarzenegger)
as he races to buy a Turbo Man action
figure for his son. Despite some cute
and almost-funny scenes with Jim
Belushi, Rita Wilson and Phil Hartman,
this flick is boring rubbish. Sinbad and
Arnold don't click and the ending is
awful. This is for devout Arnold fans
only. (Mall Inside)
Kingpin (PG-13) Without a doubt, this
is one of the funniest movies of the year.
Disgusting, crass and non-stop. Randy
Quaid, Woody Harrelson and Bill
Murray portray the tackiest traits of
America through a story of bowimg,
faifh and prosthesis. Also starring
Vanessa Angel, Chris Elliot and Laurie
Metcalf from 'Roseanne.' Directed by
the Farrelly brothers ('Dumb and
Dumber'). (Alps)
Lone Star (R) John Sayles directs one
of his best ever with 'Lone Star.' This
is a story about a Texas sheriff who hesi
tantly investigates a 'murder' from 40
yec : ago. As he digs deeper into his
small town's history, more and more
unresolved stories rise to the surface.
Great stuff from Chris Cooper, Elizabeth
Peha, Kris Kristofferson and Matt
McConaughey. Go see this.
(Beechwood)
Mars Attacks! (R) Hell, yes! Tim Bur
ton directs a total spoof, based on an
old Topps comic starring Jack
Nicholson, Glenn Close, Martin Short
Jim Brown, Tom Jones, Annette Bening,
Tom Jones, Danny Devito and so forth.
The top Army guy, played by Rod
Stieger, totally reminds me of George
C. Scott in 'Dr. Strangelovu' from the
previews. Whereas 'ID4' took itself way
too seriously, this fun flick is deliberately
stupid. I can't wait! (Beechwood)
The Mirror Has TWo Faces (PG-
13) Like her or not, Barbra Streisand
pulls off what could easily have been a
soppy romantic mess. She plays an
ugly duckling professor desperate for
true love, as Jeff Bridges plays a hand
some but dopey professor in search of
true companionship. George Segal
plays a great drinking buddy. I thought
I'd hate this, but f was pleasantly sur
prised. (Beechwood)
101 Dalmatians (G) Stick with the
animated version. This new Disney
'holiday hit' was boring and uninven
tive. Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil
could not have been more overdone
and the romance between Jeff Daniels
and Joley Richardson was as exciting
as The Weather Channel. With so many
cute animals cornu.unicating through
out this film, I thought I was watching
'Baty' or 'Charlotte's Web' at times'
Wnat was intended as cute and fun
actually was infuriating and mindless.
Yuck. (Beechwood)
Phenomenon (PG) Travo'ta, love him
or hate him, did a great job in 'Phenom
enon.' one of this summer's best films.
With help from Robert Duvall, Kyra
Sedgwick and Forrest Whitaker,
Travolta charms the screen in a story
about the human spirit and love. Bring
a companion.(AIps)
The Preacher's Wife (PG-13) Penny
Marshall directs a spiritual comedy star
ring Denzel Washington, Courtney B.
Vance and Whitney Houston. Washing
ton, an angel, answers a plea for help
from minister Vance, probably because
Houston wont stop bringing up Bobby
Brown. This may be one of the better
holiday films You cant lose with Denzel
in mere. (Mall Inside)
Ransom (R) Even though you have to
suffer through Rene Russo's emotional
squalls, the performances from Mel
Gibson, Gary Sinise and Delroy Undo
make up for it. A rich airline executive
turns the tables on his son's kidnap
pers, against the advice of the cops
and FBI. Lili Taylor is a great occom-
plice, and Donnie Wahlberg is a real
doofus. Directed by Ron Howard. (Mall
Outside)
Romeo And Juliet (R) You’ll either
love this for its daring and elaborate ap
proach, or hate it for itr hdiculO"3ness
and bulkiness. Leonardo and Claire
play naughty teens with stubborn par
ents in this updated Shakespeare clas
sic. Look for the upcoming 'Beowulf
starring, lason Priestly and that girt from
'Blossom,' or the new "Canterbury
Tales,' all in original text, starring
Crispin Glover and Jenny McCarthy.
Really. (Mall Outside)
Set It Off (R) Four young women in
LA decide to set it off, or rather, hold
up banks and 'take back what the
system took' from them. Despite
some fine acting from Jada Pinkett
and Vivica Fox, and a strange sexual
set-up for Oueen Latifah, 'Set It Off
is a n nbling mess that unintention
ally glorifies crime and violence.
(Mall Outside)
Sleepers (R) Four young lads are
simply having a go at the old hot dog
vendor, when the gag suddenly turns
deadly. They all suffer in reform
school at the hands of 'Footloose'
star Kevin Bacon Later, they plot
their revenge. Heavy film. Starring
Brad Pitt, Jason Patric, Robert
DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie
Driver. (Mall Inside)
Space Jam (PG) I hope Bugs
Bunny keeps up the good work. Even
though this is a very silly film aimed
at the younger crowd (freshmen, I
think), Bugs and Michael Jordan de
veloped a relationship on screen that
rivaled that of Rocky and Mickey, or
Oscar and Felix, or Beavis and
Butthead. (Mall Inside)
Star Trek: First Contact (PG-13)
For some reason, the Borg people re
ally pissed Captain Picard off way
back when, in this eighth Trek film,
the 'Nexi Generation Crew' battle the
fascist Borg, travel back ir. time io
the mid-21st century and try to so
ber up an American scientist. Patrick
Stewart is as dramatic as ever, and
the action and special effects are A-
1. The Borg Queen even puts the
moves on one of the crew! I usually
hate this stuff, but this was enjoyable.
(Mall Outside)
Striptease (R) This was one of the
absolute worst movies of the year. I
don't know what Demi Moore was
thinking. Ving Rhames ('Pulp Fic
tion') is a pretty cool bodyguard, but
Rurt Reynolds was horrible as the
perverted Congressman. Maybe
Gingrich should have been cast in
stead. The story is utterly stupid and
Moore is a total bore. If you need to see
fake breasts this week, itls worth the
$1.50; otherwise, stay clear. (Alps)
A Very Brady Sequel (PG-13) A
better effort than the first one. Greg
and Marcia were always on the verge
of something naughty, right? Certain
things happen during this hybrid-of-
episodes that attest to that. Shelley
Long leads the pack of generationally-
challenged through a silly, fun 'adven
ture.' I can't wait for the 'Sanford and
Son” movie, to be honest. (Alps)
There is no pick of the week this week
due to too many big dumb films clutter
ing up too many screens. However,
'Mars Attacks' looks like a gem. For the
sentimental types, go for ‘Jerry
Maguire ‘or The Preacher's Wife. ’both
of which could be surprisingly good. On
the horizon lurks John Travolta in
‘Michael,’ Mike Judge's ‘Beavis and
Butthead Do America' and Jack
Lemmon in ‘My Fellow Americans’
(there’s a sneak preview this week at
the mall) — all due out this month.
