Brian Burke ft No Tollin' (Allen’s)
Expect some down home country and
everything from Elvis to Hank to the
Rolling Stones
Dime Bag (Atomic Music Hal!) Harsh
rock. They're a brand new band in town
playing fast-paced metallic hard rock
(a la Motorhead, maybe). Very straight
forward.
Halo of Sports (Atomic Music Hall)
This same band — an offshoot of the
Emerson Quiet Kool — has been known
as Infrastructure and/or Mamie at dif
ferent times, but I'm hoping they stick
with the Halo of Sports moniker for a
while. The band described itself as be
ing very much like 'Fables-era R.E.M.,"
and while that influence is certainly
there, Halo of Sports sounds one gen
eration removed, as does For Squirrels
(who, in turn, come off rather R.E.M.-
ish). That’s not to say Halo of Sports is
any kind of rip-off band — it is not. This
could grow into something cool down
the road a bit.
Christie McCarthy (Washington
Siree! Tavern) McCarthy is a recently
transplanted singer/songwritarwho, for
much of her life, simpiy wrote songs
oecause the words and music came
into her head as she slept She has a
new CD on the way called Serendipity,
the advance songs of which are simply
incredible. McCarthy takes .ne basic el
ements that practically every singer/
songwriter utilizes and simply uses
those elements much better than most.
Sheesh, that voice is gorgeous.
Mercury Dime (High Hat) Odd (but
appealing) ragged rock from Faith,
N.C., that simultaneously recalls early
R.E.M., the ghost of Hank Williams, and
the theme from The Sting. It's piano-
based twangcore rock music, and —
as far as I can tell — itfc one of a kind.
Their new CD is called Baffled Ghosts.
and this band will be worth the effort
Six Loose Shoes (Wishbone's)
Child's play folk music.
Sprout (DT's Down Under) Live mu
sic.
22 Jacks (40 Watt) I just got the word
that 22 Jacks will be Joey RamoneS
backing band when he starts touring as
a solo artist. I had already heard the
Jacks' debut record, Uncle Bob. and
immediately heard the Ramones influ
ence. so this isn't exactly shocking
news. The ex-Wax vocalist fronts this
band, and members (or former mem
bers) of Face to Face, No Use for A
Name, and The Adolescents fill out the
rest of 22 Jacks. They play super-me
lodic punk that ever ventures into pop
territory; it's swell.
Unwritten Law (40 Watt) Positive
punk rock from Epic Records. I cant
help but think of Dag Nasty or 7 Sec
onds (circa 1986) when I hear any non-
angry punk bands nowadays. Unwrit
ten Law isn't reinventing the wheel here,
but they're spinning it relatively well.
Whippersnapper (40 Watt) Punk rock
from Atlanta. This band evolved cut of
the little-known Corpus Spin, and I'm
told they tear it up on the Atlanta party
scene. See article on Page 17.

Alta Peak (Washington Street Tavern)
This is the same band that plays
Grateful Dead songs on Tuesdays,
only tonight they're playing their own
originals.
Randall Bramblett Band (High
hat) Bramblett is a legend around
these parts (having played with Sea
Level, The Allman Brothers and Traf
fic, to name a few). I know his band
members are still beaming about
their recent trek to Texas. Ask 'em
about it. This is a 9 p m smoke-free
show, followed by an 11 p.m. smoke-
friendly one.
Davis Causey (High Hat) Causey
is a member of the Randall Bramblett
Band who has been holed away in
the studio secretly compiling his own
solo album. The album, a collection
of 14 songs written over the years
(some of which basically appeared
out of thin air recently), is called
Over Howe. It shows Causey's love
for melodic guitar work utilizing a
good deal of tasteful slide guitar
(along the lines of Eric Clapton, al
though generally more low-key). If
you heard Causey's beautiful clos
ing song from last year's Flagpole
Christmas album, you've got a guod
idea where Over Home is going. It’s
a nice place, indeed. Causey's CD
release party is from 6-8 p.m. See
interview on Page 18.
Greyscale (Georgia Theatre) Hard
hitting alternarock for the next wave.
The crunchy guitars become me
lodic before you know it, and sud
denly there's a hard pop song where
before there was just rock. See the
album review on Page 20.
Hecklahammer (Atomic Music
Hall) As if Steve Albini ground up
Kim Gordon's panties, put in Mark
Bolin's fingernails (for kick), and
poured it into Trent Reznor's drum
machine. Playing with Slackdaddy.
Ralph Roddenberry ft Second
Hand (40 Watt) This incarnation of
Second Hand features Danny
Esposito (guitar), John Mills (bass)
and Mike Gossett (drums). Second
Hand's debut CD (featuring 13 songs
penned or co-penned by
Roddenberry) is a fine slab of plas
tic exploring Roddenberry’s sort of
New Orleans-sounding full-band folk
rock. My favorite lyric from the album
is ‘Life is like a blind date/ You jump
right in, then you hesitate.’ Ain't it
the truth?
Sacred Aliens (No Where Bar)
Featuring Joe Barnes with the
rhythm section of While Buffalo
(Crumpy and Randy Durham). They
play Barnes' highly intelligent piano
songs.
Nathan Sheppard (DT's Down Un
der) Song-oriented working-man's
folk rock. Sheppard takes up resi
dence somewhere along the same
path traveled by Neil Young and Cat
Stevens, which really ain't a bad
place to be.
The Simpletons (Lowery's) Rock
covers and originals.
Slackdaddy (Atomic Music Hall) I
think I'm intrigued by Slackdaddy.
because I don't exactly ‘get’ what
they're doing. They refuse to be
boxed into any style you could de
scribe in a sentence (and after all,
I've got to try). Sometimes they
sound like The Police, or The Talk
ing Heads, or Follow For Now, or
even Sly & the Family Stone. There
are elements of rock, funk, punk and
jam-oriented stuff in any given song,
and the best thing about music like
this is that you've simply got to hear
it yourself before you can know if it's
your thing cr not.
Srper Natural (Georgia Theatre)
Super Natural plays technical, mid-
'80s metal along the lines of old-
school Metallic^, Testament or a
Pita Wraps, Phillies, Veggies, Salads
Value Meals, Beer, Ale, & Stout
