more grinding, slower Slayer. Play

Tibbetts Street (Wishbone’s)
They mix and match groovy styles
and musical genres from just about
everywhere, and their CD One Sev
enty does a pretty swell job ol docu
menting just that.
Violet (40 Watt) Opening for
Where’s Anita? and Ralph
Roddenberry.
Where's Anita? (40 Watt) Although
Where's Anita? has functioned as
stripped down as an acoustic duo in
the past, this is the full band experi
ence. A combination of six and 12-
string guitars plus percussion, dur
eling vocals, bass and drums fill-out
the Anita Blaschak/Debbie Norton
compositions in the best possible
way. Their most recent CD. My New
Word, is wel' worth a listen for the
folk rock enthusiast.

Alien Child (Peppino’s) Intergalac-
tic soundwaves. Originals, mostly.
Athens Songwriter's Show*
case (Peppino’s) Featuring Scott
Shaner, Joe Pruitt and Joe
Baracco. Others are welcome, and
the same crew will play again tomor
row. Also Peppino’s has plans to do
some serious renovating to become
more of a full-time club early in the
new year. Stay tuned for details.
Dave Blackmon A the BTU’s
(Wishbone's) This is a new bluegrass
ensemble featuring Dave Blackmon
on fiddle; Mike Harrison on banjo
and vocals; Allan Hughes on guitar,
mandolin, dobro and vocals; and
Keith Morris on stand-up bass and
high baritone vocals. They play a lot
of the old traditional bluegrass
songs, and mix it up a little with
some swing. Check it out.
Brian Burke & No Tell in'
(Allen’s) Expect some down home
country and everything from Elvis to
Hank to the Rolling Stones.
The Continentals (High Hat) The
Continentals are one of Atlanta's
best exports. They play country, love
songs, and all-around crooners and
come highly recommen"’ / just
about everyone who has seen ’em —
including me. They're a dance band
good enough to listen to at home
(with or without boogie shoes), and
they're guaranteed to put a smile on
yer mug.
Dayroom (DT’s Down Under) It’s
the groove that makes yer booty
move. Dayroom should rock this joint
funky.
Driva*Ey Truckers (40 Watt)
These guys slam through songs with
a vengeance usually reserved for the
very angry. Patterson Hood’s twisted
country songs have never been
stronger ("Bulldozers & Dirt’ is one of
many fine examples), and now he fi
natty has a band as strong as he is.
Mr. Pitiful (Athens Brewing Com
pany) A high-energy blues band,
ieaturmg two members ol The Heal
ers, vocalist Clarence Cameron from
Kingfish and Steve Keane (ex-Neal
Pattman) on bass. They would rather
put on a "show" than just play songs.
This is music you can move to.
People Who Mutt (Atomic Music
Hall) Jangle-pop from Augusta. The
Road You Travel was released last
year on Cargo Records.
Star Room Boys (40 Watt) Pure
heartland honky tonk. The band has
scrapped plans for their new 7-inch
in favor of recording a full-length CD
early in the new year. They’ve got
four songs in the can and hope to
record something like eight more to
complete the record. Stay tuned.
Tibbetts Street (Georg a Theatre)
They mix and match groovy styles
and musical genres from just about
everywhere, and their CD One Sev
enty does a pretty swell job of docu
menting just that. Tommy Gunn
(Lowery's) Dylan. Stones and Dead
covers. Plus more.
Tone Deaf Radio (Georgia The
atre) Ever changing, e-er evolving.
Last I heard, TOR was a three-piece,
although their Syd Barrett -n.eets
Midnignt Oil-type songs are still at
tha core of what they do. Opening
for Tibbetts Street.
Trinket (Atomic Music Hall) Tney're
more Sex Pistols than they are
Nusrat All Khan now, and that's just
fine by me. Their version ol the
Ramones’ ‘Merry Christmas (I Don't
Wanna Fight Tonight)’ on the Flag
pole Christmas Album is actually a
few seconds shorter than the
Ramones' version. Ah, sweet youth.

Athens Symphony Orchestra
(Classic Center) This Saturday, the
Athens Symphony Orchestra will per
form its annual Christmas concert at
8 p.m. at the Classic Center. Conduc
tor At Ligotti will perform classical
Christmas music, including excerpts
from Vivaldi's "Gloria," and Handel's
"Messiah." Then the First Presbyte
rian Choir will do "Jesu, Joy of Mants
Desiring" by Bach. The second half
of the concert will be more contem
porary Christmas music, with Leroy
Anderson's "Sleighride." and the fea
tured work "The Many Moods of
Christmas (Suite No.1)," by Robert
Shaw and "White Christmas." The
evening will close with an audience
sing-along of Christmas carols utiliz
ing the chorus and Symphony both
(the lyrics for which will be printed
in the audience's programs). The
event is free.
Elf Power (40 Watt) Lo-fi, sludgy,
warp-factor indie rock. I still haven't
heard their new 7-mch, The Winter
HawL EP. but their first full-length.
Vainly Clutching At Phantom Limbs
is truly a lo-fi masterpiece. The.r
shows are seldom the-sanr.e, so ex
pect the unexpected.
Fuzzy Sprouts (Georgia Theatre)
Schizophrenic, fun-filled rock/pop/
funky blues/metal. To keep abreast of
the latest Sprout news, you can write
P.O. Box 48545. Athens. GA 30604
and ask to be included on the band's
mailino list — they send out post
cards, lyric books, and other cool
stuff fairly often. You could also call
the Sprout Hotline at 549-1700.
The Go To Hells (Atomic Music
Hall) Gee, I feel so rejected. They're
playing on a bill with The Kiss My
Asses and The Eat My Shortses. Well,
maybe not.
The Healers (High Hat) Chicago-
and Texas-style blues.
Mi Cosa (Wishbone's) This is a
loose, unrehearsed collection of
some of Athens' best musicians from
blues and funk and rock back
grounds, including members of
Brides of Jesus, Phat Phive and oth
ers. •
Mud (Atomic Music Hall) Playing
with The Go To Hells.
Of Montreal (40 Watt) Opening for
Elf Power.
Rachel A Andy (DT's Down Under)
Admittedly cheesy (but fun) acous
tic little diddies, complete with silly
theme songs and some serious origi
nals. No grumpy people allowed
Ralph Roddenberry A Second
Hand (Georgia Bar) This is tne GA
Bar's Christmas party. Second
Hand's debut CD (featuring 13 songs
penned or co-penned by
Roddenberry) is a fine slab of plas
tic exploring Roddenberr/s sort of
New Orleans-sounding full-band folk
rock.
Space Voyage Ahem~. (Georgia
Theatre) T.iree-piece rock from out-
of-this world. Opening for the Fuzzy
Sprouts.

Songwriter's Showcase (Athens
Brewing Company) This latest in
stallment of the weekly showcase
here at the Brew Pub features per
formances from: Tobin Hines
(stark, mournful folk), Jay
Markwalter (Southern folk rock),
Christie McCarthy (beautiful,
soulful folk), Marc Pilvinsky (dis
sonant sad songs) and Matthew
Sanborn (low-key quirky art-folk).
Music begins at 9 p.m., and the
songwriters will probably play a sort
of "round robin" set (each person
playing one song, then passing the
mic).

(Flanagan's) Jazz standards ano
originals
Mile Zero (DT’s Down Under) This
is the new project from Matthew
White, Tom McNeill and Mike Rizzi
(all ex-Nathan Sheppard Band).
They are joined by Andy Ingalls (er-
Good Cows) for a full-on rock project
that will have their playing a ton of
iheir own material plus some ob
scure covers like Yo La Tengo and
the Velvet Underground.
Project S.A.N.E. Benefit *High
Hat) Featuring Mike Mantione (of
Five-Eight), Paul Lombard and
William Tonks (of the Hot
Burritos). Project S.A.N.E. is a more
compassionate way of helping rape
victims than the system usually pro
vides. S.A.N.E. survives largely due
to donations, so seeing this show
(which should be great, by the way)
is one way to help while you enjoy a
swell evening on the town. See Page
19 for more info.
