MUST BE JELLY: Fans of real (ahem...)
music journalism via Crawdaddy, MOJO,
No Depression and early Creem should
check out Jelly, an excellent periodical pub
lished in Seattle six times a year. This 32-
page publication is devoted to in-depth re
views of a little bit of everything, although
there is a definite slant towards the singer/
songwriter genre. The issue ! just got
through reading covers everything from a
Classic/Columbia vinyl re-issue of Duke
Ellington's Blues In Orbit (whose title NRBQ
ripped off for their amazing Grooves In Or
bit) to a CD re-issue of Gram Parsons &
The Fallen Angels’ Live 1973. Also, their
bluegrass reviews (in this issue encompass
ing Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Peter
Rowan) are close to the best
I've read in any domestic pub
lication. Most endearing qual
ity? This particular issue fea
tures a section called The Jam
Session, where staff members

READ THIS: We have just received con
firmation that one Tony Eubanks (of the
High Hat) did, without provocation and
entirely of his own volition, attend the re
cent Neil Diamond concert in Atlanta. This
is not a joke, but did in fact actually hap
pen. It is unknown at this time whether or
not Mr. Eubanks sang along during Mr.
Diamond's rendition of "Song Sung Blue."
Drew A'ston, to the best of our knowledge,
was not involved. Mr. Eubanks' street cred
will be on sale at the Flagpole office as of
the 11th. $100 OBO. (Oh, and I do think
that "Thank The Lord for the Night Time"
is a cool song. So there.) Editor's Note: This
is obviously one of those Flagpole inside
jokes: so inside that even the editor is not
sure what it's about.
HOLLYWOOD AWAITS (in a sense...):
Jouiles Wright is soliciting music from lo
cal musicians for a film currently in pre-
production called In The Flesh. The film,
produced by Cape Town Films in Atlanta
and directed by Ben Taylor, basically in
volves "two main characters — a street
hustler and a cop who come into contact
during a murder investigation." Sounds
pretty cool, huh? They're planning to be
gin shooting in February, and Wright (who
is acting as Managing Music Producer for
the film) is looking for submissions via a
demo tape or CD, with specific selections
from the artists chosen to be included on
the In The Flesh soundtrack. All music sub
mitted should be dropped at Wright's mail
box at 735 Bouievard 30601 (corner of
Chase and Boulevard), and you'll need to
include two copies of your demo, plus all
the requisite contact information if you
make it past the screening/selection process.
All the music submitted will also be kept on
file for considerat' js future soundtrack
material. Most importantly, the deadline for
all submissions is Dec. 18, giving you roughly
a week to get your demo in. If you ^
need any additional information,
call Jouiles at 22/-9183. Get J
cracking, kids.
ON DA WEB: AthensNet I
RealAudio Cyber Jukebox, a I
cool site on the web, basically |
makes your music available to
the world at large. All you need
to do is submit
Black Label, and mouth off
about records they've been lis
tening to lately. Let me stress
something here: this publica
tion, which veers just far away
enough from "audiophile"
status so as not to frighten
me, contains more literate
music writing in 32 pages than
10,000 pages of Musician. For
subscription information, con
tact Jelly at P.O. Box 29424,
Seattle, WA 98124-0924, or
dial up the magazine on the
Web at http://
www.jellyroll.com/.
ADDENDUM: In continuation
of a previous installment concern
ing the remaining members of the
Jayhawks, they have changed their
name to 6 Green Olives. Much like
Mr. Eubanks' installment, this is not
a joke.
