Beam and Butthead Do America
(PG-13) A sophisticated comedy about
the trials and tribulations of two young
heroes in an adventurous journey to this
nation's capita 1 If you're net a fan of the
MTV show, stay far away. This animated
masterpiece from smartass Mike Judge
will without a doubt be the dumbest film
in Athens for weeks. I canl wait. Starring
Beayis, Butthead, next-door neighbor
Anderson, Bill Clinton and Robert Stack.
(Beechwood... huh, huh, I wrote "wood")
Daylight (R) After an enormous explo
sion in a New York commuter tunnel, dis
graced ex-EMS chief Sly Stallone sneaks
in to save the day The fiery scenes look
great, but as in "ID4." you canl believe
anyone actually survives the blast. What’s
more, the pack of survivors whine and
complain when Stallone, their only hope.
tnes to rescue them. No guns, no sex. no
fun. ‘Dragonhead' director Rob Cohen
meant to make a trendy disaster movie,
and "Daylight* is disastrous. (Beechwood)
The English Patient (R) This dramatic
love and war story does not hit the mark.
Many viewers found the affair between the
Hungarian archaeologist Ralph Fiennes
and his comrade's wife Kristin Scott Tho
mas emotionally intact. I found it frustrat
ing Juliette Binoche as a compassionate
nurse and Willem Dafoe as a strong-out
thiel are terrific in the scenes with the dy
ing English patient, but the winding plot
and vague love iequires much patience.
(Beechwood)
First Wives Club (PG) This comedy
about divorce, revenge and self-worth was
here forever. Now you can see Bette
Midler, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn
strut their aging stuff for cheap at Alps.
Lots of cute gags, cameos and martinis.
Not great, but not bad (Alps)
Fly Away Horn (PG) A good famiy ftn
based on the true story of a father-daughter
team nelping a flock of Canadian geese team
to mgrate. Jet Daniels and Anna Raqiin aie
the reteciart duo, and they grow closer to
gether after an initially sad reirion. Swei
and environmentally conscious. (Alps)
Jeny Maguire (R) See Movie Pick. (Mail
Inside)
Jingle Al the Way (PG) Diii.it sue was
tunny when Arnold and Sinbad were chas
ing each other in the toy store, duh. This
"Christmas" flick depicts the worst of the
worst holiday ‘gift giving" traditions,
marred by traffic, selfishness, greed, infi
delity, lying, stealing, drinking and covet
ing... sort of like downtown^ bar scene.
Despite some mildly amusing cameos
and gags, Arnold Schwarzenegger just
isn't that fumy as he searches for a Turbo
Man for his son. Poor baby. (Mall Inside)
Kingpin (PG-13) If you are easily of
fended or Amish, skip this. If you want to
see a non-stop mockery of the tackiest
American trait* with one vulgar joke after
another, don't miss this. Jokes about floss,
semen, breasts, urinals and prostitution.
Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid and Bill
Murray star in this follow-up to "Dumb and
Dumber." This was the funniest movie of
the summer, so don't be Munsoned. (Alps)
Mars Attacks! (R) Hell, no! I cant be
lieve it. The most exciting December re
lease was a total bore! Even with an all-
star cast, Tim Burton's hit and miss sci-fi
comedy drags on and on with no concept
and lame jokes. The "war room" scenes
with Rod Steiger as the generai and Jack
Nicholson as the president were totally a
‘Dr. Strangelove" rip-off. The martians
were funny initially, but wore thin very fast.
None of the roles were well-written. Maybe
Burton expected to dazzle the audience
with the massive cast. ‘Mars Attacks!"
was a passive disappointment.
(Beechwood)
Mighty Ducks 3 (PG) Emilio Estevez
was wise to stay out of most scenes.
Disney flops and lilts in the water with this
lame sequol. Hockey is mighty fine, but
for underdog kid sports honor, skip this
and rent the real thing, "The Bad News
Bears." (/Jps)
My Fellow Americans (PG-13) More
politics? Yep, and this time it’s grumpy old
man Jack Lemmon and Rockford Filer
James Gamer as political rivals who iron-
call; tc3m up in this Peter Segal ("Tommy
Boy") comedy. They challenge the current
president after they team of his dirty White
House dealings (surprise, surprise!). Dan
Aykroyd and Lauren Bacall also star in this
political comedy. This could be funnier
than ‘This Week With David Brinkley"
(Man Inside)
The Mirror Has Two Faces (PG-13)
Good film. If you're looking tor something
entertaining after those big holiday meals
this week with the gmmpy old relatives,
go see this. The love and beauty theme
isn't too syrupy, and Streisand peppers
each scene with good one-liners. Stamng
Jeff Bridges, Lauren Bacall, Mimi Rogers
and what's-her-name. (Beechwood)
101 Dalmatians (G) Younger kids will
love the "Babe'-like sequences with the
daknatian puppies and other animals, but
watch out: Glenn Close is like a bad SNL
character and the interaction between
Joety Richardson and J ’ Daniels is as
fun as a trip to the gas station Disney
shodd have left well enough alone. WhatS
next — a live action remake of "Dumbo?"
Cut it out. (Beechwood)
The Preacher's Wife (PG-13) A remake
of the 1947 fim “The Bishop); Wile." A rev
erend under duress (Courtney B. Vance)
asks for help from the big guy, so an an
gel (Denzel Washington) shows up for the
gig. The problems between the preacher
and his choir-leading wife (Whitney Hous
ton) arenT always clear, but the laid-back
charm of Washington is. This is <a good
seasonal film that could have been a bit
funnier, with a surprisingly strong perfor
mance from the normally shrieking Hous
ton. (Mall Inside)
Ransom (R) Mel Gibson, a wealthy air
line owner challenges the kidnappers who
are holding his son ransom in this Ron
Howard thriller. Bad guys Gary Sinise
("Truman"), Donnie Wahlberg (New Dorks
on the Block) and Lili Taylor ("Girls Town,"
"i Shot Andy Warhol") are nervous wrecks
as Gibson turns the tables on them, offer
ing a reward for their capture. Sure it's btg
Hollywood stdf, but ifc pretty good. Also
starnng Rene Russo and Delray Undo.
(Man Outside)
Romeo And Juliet (R) For the real
Shakespeare deal, I suggest waiting for
the massive "Hamlet" from Kenneth
Branagh, or Al Pacino in "Looking For Ri
chard" in the next few weeks. "Romeo and
Juliet’ is the Ainericanized updated we
sion of Shakespeare, a8 dressed uo and
nowhere to go. DiCaprio and Danes set
off some sparks, but the cast reciting origi
nal text gets a bit ridiciJous. Imagine the
gangs in "Colors" threatening each other
in Elizabethan English. (Mall Outside)
Scream (R) Drew Barrymore, Courtney
Cox and David Arquette star in this Wes
Craven horror film about a horror film-ob
sessed psychopath (no, not Marc
Piivinsky) staking a pack of teens alone
in a huge house The kilter alludes to ele
ments of the "Elm Street" and "Friday the
13th" films as he scares the pants olf the
sexy teen idols [No, not Ballard Lesemann.
-Ed.]. (Mall Outside)
Sat ft Of (R) I thought that "crime doesnt
pay," but it does apparently for Vivica Fox
("ID4") and Jada Pinkett ("Nutty Profes
sor*) and Queen Latifah. A good cast suf
fering through an urreaSstic inner city story
of sex, money and unfairness. (Mall Inside)
Space Jam (PG) The Loony Toons char
acters and Michael Jordan work together
in animated fun for the kids to save the
world from the mean old Monstars. I'm
surprised the religious fundamentalist fa
natics haven't attacked this for the
paganistic theme and glorification of pos
sible alien beings, as well as the use of
the Tasmanian Devil. (MaH Inside)
Star TYek: First Contact (PG-13) I
remember when Bjorn Borg beat Mclnroe
at Wimbledon in 1980 Why did he abuse
crew go back in time to the mid 21 st Cen
tury as they battle the Borg on their own
ship while Picard struggles with a terri
fied earthling who got on board acciden
tally. Follow? You'll gel it. Trekkies declare
this the best film of the Star Trek series.
It's pretty good. (Mall Outside)
Striptease (R) You'll hate this from the
ridiculous opening courtroom scene,
through the stupid Brit Reynolds politi
cal shtick, all the way to the titillating fi
nale. Demi Moore sheds her clothing and
her pride in this foul flick. See this only to
keep abreast of the situation. Ahem. (Alps)
A Very Brady Sequel (PG-13) If you
missed this first time through, catch it now.
The culmination of various jokes from vari
ous episodes along with a still portrayal
of Greg should keep you
twuntysomethings satisfied. These '70s
show revivals are getting fun. I hope to
see some "Chico and the Man" and
‘Sanford and Son" remakes soon. (Alps)
his privilege and start a race of fascist
space beings? The ‘Next Generation"
Jerry Maguire (R) Even with the corny previews, I kinda looked forward
to this romantic comedy from Cameron Crowe (“Say Anything," “Singles'). I
think the idea of mocking the greed and corruption in the sports industry ap
pealed to me, plus a realistic relationship between realistic characters seems
Ike a breath of fresh air in this murky film season, plus there’s plenty cf Who
music in this.
Tom Cruise is Jerry Mag lire, a top notch sports agent who suddenly real
izes the abusive and greedy nature of his field. After an impulsive “mission
statement,’ Maguire is fired from his company, struggles to keep his clients,
and ends up with his most eccentric aid least-known football player, Cuba
Gooding Jr. Gooding is great as berth loving husband and motivated rookie.
Maguire has one devoted employee, played very well by the lovely new
comer Renee Zellweger. She abandons ship with Maguire despite the risk
because she has faith in hist lids. In several very delicate scenes, Zellweger
and Cruise awkwardly plot thei business plans, open up to each other and
eventuafly almost fall r love.
The screen-stealer here is the son, played by Jonathan Lipnicki. This kid
instantly wins Maguire's heart, and the viewer's. Unite those Cukkviike trained
chid actors you see so much of Lipnicki is natual, sweet and very funny. He
plays an integral role in tlie developing relationship between his mom and
Maguire.
The hunorous flashbacks to Maguire’s sports mentor, the divorce group,
the bitchy fiancee and the sweet, teary-eyed performance from Zellweger help
Gooding and Cruise make this film a surprising success. Please catch this
entertaining and touching movie over the holidays.
