. he Georgia Museum of Art on campus.
• At the Georgia Museum of Art: To keep you warm and stimulated
this holiday season, when it seems Athens becomes what it would be if
the University was no! here — a scary thought — the Georgia Museum of
Art has some wonderful exhibitions for your viewing pleasure... although
two women fignting over the last blender at Wal-Mart does have its enter
tainment value.
“The Modernist Urge” will be shown through Jan. 26 in the Philip Henry
Alston Jr. Gallery. This exhibition includes over 40 paintings, prints and
drawings by artists John E. Costigan, Nathan Dolinsky and John W. Taylor,
who worked in a variety of
styles, including realism, ab
straction and cubism
John Costigan's (1888-
1972) work reflects his ap
preciation of the land and its
relation to human life. His
themes focus on the human
figure, and he often turned to
family members, workers
and farmers for inspiration.
Also concerned with the
emotions of everyday life,
Nathan Dolinsky (1890-1985)
made his first public appea
ance in the Armory Show in 1913. Primarily portraits, landscapes and still
lifes, his works are known for their rich, colorful palette.
John Taylor (1897-1983) is considered an American Scene painter. His art
also suggests the influences of cubism and surrealism, and encompasses
such themes as American life after the Depression and World War II. He was
primarily a landscape painter, but his later style verged on abstraction.
Curated by students in the Museum Studies Program at the GMOA
under the direction of William U. Eiland, this exhibition is a rediscovery of
significant achievement in 20th Century American Art.
Also showing through Jan. 26 is “An Eye on Flande.s: The Graphic
Art of Jules DeBruycker.” This traveling exhibition, created by Stephen H.
Goddard (the Spencer Museum of Art c 'rata), includes 51 prints, draw
ings and books chronicling the career of artist Jules De Bruycker (1870-
1945), one of Belgium's most gifted 20th Century printmakers.
De Bruycker was ban into a waking-class family in one of the old
quarters of Ghent. While pursuing his art, he was an interia decaata,
upholsterer and wallpaperc like his father. At the age of 30, he began
etching and quickly became a virtuoso printmaker.
This exhibition chronicles his early works, Droduced in a dilapidated
studio in an abandoned monastery, his Great War images executed while
an expatriate in London, works rendered between the wars as his recogni
tion grew, and the last etchings of his career that witness the second oc
cupation of Ghent during Wald War II.

tions that influenced Campbell throughout his career — the Watkinsville
farm where he grew up, Sapelo Island on the Geagia coast, Anarctica
and the Tuscany region of Italy.

Porter, will be shown at Airum (125 Clayton St.) through Dec. 31.
