Brian Burk* (Allen's) Expect some
downhome country and everything from
Elvis to Hank to the Rolling Stones.
Christie McCarthy (Washington Street
Tavern) You could just lose yourself in
McCarthy's beautiful voice and her pas
sionate songs. This is pari of her regular
Wednesday Night gig here at the Tavern.
Phat Pagan (DTs Down Under) Acous
tic rock. Onginals and cover tunes.
Popcycle (High Hat) This is the new,
more fitting name for Catfish Jenkins. The
band plays hard rockin' power pop with
more in common with Live and Peart Jam
than the bands their former name may
have implied. They're a sol'd band with
quality songwnting as the backbone.
Nathan Sheppard (High Hat)
Sheppard has been a staple of the folk
rock s-ene hare for years. His songs in
habit a peaceful inner landscape he
shares with artists like Cat Stevens and
James Taylor. Tonight he's playing with
Popcycle.
Song Swap (The Globe. Upstairs) All
you need to attend the song swap is a
pair of ears. A song and a guitar are wel
come, too, of course, but listeners are just
as welcome as players 9 p.m. to mid
night.

T'ey Boyer Band (No Where Bar) Folky
alternative rock.
Hobex (Atomic Music Hall) When Dillon
Fence broke up earlier this year, singer/
guitarist Greg Humphries wanted to try
something a couple steps away from that
band's jangle rock roots: soul music. Ift
a pretty novel (though scary) idea for three
white guys to play songs that could eas
ily pass for an early 70s Diana Ross al-
bun (and I must admit I didnt care for
their Payback EP until the second or third
listen), but I'll bet this stuff is loads of fun
to see live, and even more fun to play.
Sometimes I hear shades of Follow For
Now’s more soul-oriented grooves here
(the drummer was in Johnny Quest, if
that's any indication), and who knows, I
think these guys just might make some
thing of themselves. This is part of the
Revolution Christmas Party.
Martee MacLeod (High Hat) The al
ways impressive Ms MacLeod has
treated us to her shows three or four times
a year since she moved to Minneapolis a
couple years back. Lately she has been
hard at work on her third album lor Peter
Jesperson's Medium Cool Records, and
her song “No Vacancy' is still one of my
favorite Chnstmas songs. She plays heart
land lotk rock with enough country twang
to make it about the most charming thing
you've ever heard. She’s a gem.
Todd McBride (High Hat) McBride is
one of the Dashboard Saviors. Tonight he'll
be playing a number of his own country/
folk songs. He's opening for Marlee
MacLeod and The V-Roys.
The Queer & Famous Baby Ivan
(Roadhouse) Big rock along the lines of
Superchunk, Jawbox and Weczer all
rolled into one. They're hoping to enter the
studio in January to record their first CD

The Tender Idols (Atomic Music Hall)
Lush pop. They've got the pop smarts of
America with the dreamy tee, of Manches
ter. but it's the smart way those two ele
ments are combined that put this band
two steps ahead ot the pack. They'ie from
Atlanta, and have just released a self-titled
CD. See them now, so you won't have to
pay $20 when they're playing the Fox. This
is part ot the Revolution Christmas Party.
Tho V-Roys (High Hat) !n-yer-face in
surgent country the likes of which most o!
us have yet to experience. They've got a
new record on Steve Earle's E-Squared
label, and to say it 'simply rocks' is quite
the understatement. These guys are great.
plain and simple. Playing on a heck of a
bill with Marlee MacLeod and Todd
McBride.
