YOUR BALL AND CHAIN: As I am wont
to do whenever she plays in Athens, I must
stress that you attend the Marlee Madeod
show at the High Hat Thursday, Dec. 19.
Unless you've been under a
rock, you probably know
that Marlee up and moved to
Minneapolis a few years
back, and has steadily done
the whole touring thing,
most recently for her second
Medium/Cool album Favorite
Ball And Chain. In reference
to that record, Marlee just
finished up recording her
next album's worth of songs
with Favorite... producer
John Fields along with Dash
board Saviors drummer John
Crist, Fields and former
Prince drummer Michael
Bland (among others). The
songs were recorded at
Funkytown in Minneapolis,
and you should expect a re
lease of sorts around spring
of '97. In reference to Me
dium/Cool, Jack Logan plans
to begin recording his next
album at Clay Harper's Ca
sino Studios in Atlanta, said
project being produced by
Casino's Cosmo Vinyl. Al
though he'll definitely be
joined by Liquor Cabinet for
the record, Logan is apparently working
with only a string section for other tracks.
Thank you and goodnight.
HEART-SHAPED ALBUM- "So here is
[sic] my songs and advice for
kids who have been
bailed on...." —
Simone Timony
Fair. The Stinky
Puffs, a San Fran
cisco-based all-kid
noise/punk band, have just re
leased Songs And Advice For
Kids Who Have Been Left
Behind, a seven-song mini
album that basically
sprang out of the
mind of
Puffs
guitar
ist/vocalist/
songwriter Simon
Fair Timony. Timony
had collaborated
with Kurt Cobain
and Krist
Novoselic (in
various noisy side-projects)
before Cobain's suicide in
1994, and actually intended
this album to be therapeutic
for him (in the wake cf
Cobain's death and Timony's
own stepfather leaving his
family recently) and for kids
whose parents just don't have
any idea how to "parent," and
end up being victims of di
vorce, abuse, etc. Though
these seven songs, including a
raw, steely re-make of Gary
Wright's "Dream Weaver" and
Fair’s send-off to Kurt "I'll Love
You Anyway," are basically ca
thartic exercises in blistering
guitar-scrunge, underneath all
the screaming lies a real beat
ing heart. You get the feeling
that Fair is
wise beyond
his years and
that this
record (dedicated to
Frances Bean Cobain)
means more in the grand
scheme of things than a
million heart-felt
celebrity remem
brances con
cerning Cobain
and what he left
behind. Contact Fair

THIS JUST IN: As you
read this (assuming you've picked up this
issue the very second it hit the stands), the
folks at the Cotton Club in Atlanta (just
scant feet from Frijoleros) are readying the
stage for an Album 88 benefit show, fea
turing the Handsome Family (recently
opened for Wiico), Joe Christmas and
(drum roll, please) Vic Chesnutt.
AND FINALLY: If you have any news or
info for Yer Goody, well, call Mr. Pilvinsky.
You (and I) have just completed the final
installment of this column, as I am step
ping down from my post at Flagpole to
do... something else. I've certainly enjoyed
hearing from all of the faithtul out there
in reader-land over the past four years, and
hope that we car all sit down and have a
beer soon. I'll miss you guys.
That's Yer Goody for the week of 12-
18-96.
Merry Christmas.
