Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
(PG-13) “Saturday Night Live** vet Mike Myers (mas
termind of Waynes
World) scores big with
this saucy, juvenile come
dy spoof. Myers stars in
grand Peter Sellers fash
ion in a dual role as Austin
Powers. “International Man Of
Mystery," and as "Dr. Evil,
Austin’s archnemesis. “Austin is a
Carnaby Street refugee who has his own
style, vocabulary and views of life that res
onate from Britain in the 1960s," Myers says.
Austin is a fashion photographer by day. secret
agent by night, and somehow believes he is the
sexiest cat in London.
Jim Stacy recently said, “Mike Myers is just
a one-note trumpet." Good point. Myers tends
to he the same character in everything, and
Austin really is just a suave, mod version of
Wayne. However, as writer and co-produc
er, Myers shows off a greater talent for
timing and script. Yes, this film is
incredibly stupid, hut the comedy
works. It’s Myers non-stop approach
that makes what could have looked
foolish come off as hilarious.
After 30 years of "cryogenic sleep,
both Austin and Dr. Evil battle in gag after
gag in scenes that pay constant tribute to James
Bond movies. The Pink Panther, Airplane, Naked
Gun, "Get Smart" and even The Blues Brothers. The
running joke, of course, is that both Austin (and his
bad teeth) and Dr. Evfl can’t quite grasp the PC ‘90s
scene. The 30-year gap fuels most of the humor.
Elizabeth Hurley (Dangerous Ground) is a charming,
sophisticated ana sexy straight-faced
sidekick. Michael York plays "Basil
Exposition" and Robert Wagner is
“Number Two." The constant toilet
and sex jokes work well when
delivered by the likes of Tom
Arnold, Carrie Fisher, “SNL’s"
Will Farrell and Ron’s brother
Clint Howard. Hell, even Burt
Bacharach shows up in a
cameo. Also, watch carefully
for the quick intermittent
shots of Austin's audacious
band “Ming Tea," featuring
former Bangle Susanna
Hoffs and Matthew Sweet.
Ridiculous stuff.
This comedic hodge
podge goes for broke. Non
stop quick scenes with an
endless barrage of fart jokes,
crushed velvet, mod slang,
“femhots," shits and giggles
work for this movie just as the
same approach worked for Kingpin.
Much of the secret agent references
will he lost on the
younger audience, but
the rest of you will get
it. Enjoy this refresh
ingly silly and clever
comedy before MTV
pounds the “shagging"
catch phrases into the
ground? This is enter
tainment.
