Bandolt (40 Walt) Part of the 40
Watt's blues-rock showcase
B.C.E. (High Ha!) This is a iazz-band
side-proiect lor some ot the Tibbetts
Street guys They play jazz standards
Opening tor Jeet Na Ju
Blue Condition (DT's Down Under)
Alternative rock originals and covers
They disappeared for about six months,
but now. apparently, they're back
Brian Burke (Allens) Expect some
down-home country from this
NormaJtown Flyer, plus everything Irom
Elvis to Hank to the Rolling Stones
Eric Hamilton Band (40 Wall} Their
influences range from The Police and
Dire Straits to Blues Traveller and the
Gratetul Dead They're jam-oriented,
but the tattooed Hamilton is a big tan
of ironic literature like Mark Twain, so
maybe there’s more going on here than
meets the eye
Jeet Na Ju (High Hat) Coltrane.
Mingus. Sun Ra-type stuff They mess
with people's ears a little, and have fun
with dissonance
Kincaid (Wuxtry Cate) With their
debut album. Good Citi/en ol the
Month, hoi off the presses, expect
Kincaid to begin what will surely be a
global mission ot conquest They’ll
probably be a b«t more stnpped-down
in this setting
Malayn (40 Watt) Rhymes with
"Waylon * This is an alternative metal
band from a nearby town They’ve got
more than a little MeUHica in their
blood — it’s mainly the vocals. I sup
pose — but they're not bad at all
(though they donl really belong on a
‘blues rock* showcase night like
tonight). A cassette they brought me
shows some serious promise.
Klngfish (Hall Moon Pub) This week
Kinghsh is filling in for Mr Pitiful, who
has an out-ol -town show
Planet Jive (Washington Street
Tavern) A mus'cat stew of lunk. hip-
hop. R&B and a healthy dose ol jam-
oriented groove They’re a live-piece
instrumental band with a ’90s refecting
earlier soul and lunk influences I never
would've guessed that members ot
White Buffalo and Trio Noctourna
would have anything to talk about, but
here they are m the same band*
The Possibilities (Atomic Music
Hall) They've been laying low lately
(other than some tnps down to Macon
and one out to Ohio), but there are
some possibly big things in the works
lor these guys, and it couldn't happen
to a more deserving bunch ol song
writers Whether they're rocking out
Replacements-style or playing a
straight-up country song. The
Possibilities can shane-shift success
fully into just about anything they want
12:15 a.m.
Tfee Qulatmen (Atomic Music Hail)
The band has been recording some
new stutf out at Small Town Sound,
and is headed in a more ‘sugar pop'
direction. One new song they brought
me is pure pop like XTC meets Prince,
and i1* pretty swell. They're the first of
three bands tonight, so they SWEAR
they're starting a! 1015 p m SHARP
Bock and Roll Summer (Atomic
Music Hall) My gosh Sometimes a
band comes out ol nowhere and iust
blows my socks oil Rock and Roll
Summer (yes. they're very persnickety
about that spelling) is the kind ol hon
est. non-pretentious. FUN band that
could make Ihe most hardened cynic
drop his guard They're in the same
let's-all-have some-tun boat as the
Talking Heads and Violent Femmes,
but they’ve got their own innocence
and charm They were briefly known as
The Adults (and played under that
moniker on ‘Live in the Lobby’) Go
see them 1115pm
Soup (Wishbone's) In the age ot
Hootie. these guys just may go places
Like Das Blowhsh. Soup plays
straightforward. song-based pop rock
Their debut record is called Laughing
at the Fables
Thursday, May 8
Ceiling Fan (40 Watt) Goot pop The
band recently played lor tree in the Tate
Center Quad, billing themselves
Brother Jeb & His Hellfire Choir (a joke
they're not sure many people got) They
also just recorded a song tor Robert
Lurie's upcoming Bowie tribute album,
and have plans tor a split single with
Stuntdouble (which, in an amazing
coincidence, features Ceiling Fan's
drummer)
Dixie Blood Moustathe (Atomic
Music Hall) This experimental unit will
perform using any combination ol
kitchen appliances, tape manipulation,
toys sid other non-traditional instru
ments They're part of the whole Olivia
Tremor Control family
The Hill (No Where Bar) Bluesy-jazzy
groove-rock with a Southern Hair and
some really interesting instrumenta
tion They also have, at a given
moment, like 20 guitarists (well. okay,
maybe less). Expect some covers
Jack Ingram (High Hat) Ingram is a
country smger/songwrrter on the Arista
Austin label His new record is a fine
addition to the swelling Americana
genre, although he definitely leans
more toward true country than any ot
country* offshoots. See the story on
Page 17.
Irving Ktaw Trio (Atomic Music Hall)
Piaymg with Dixie Blood Moustache
and Jeff Mangum
Jett Mangum (Atomic Music Hall)
Mangum is the Neutral Milk Hotel's
mam man. He has been sitting in with
the Olma Trertk. * xitroi lately — hes
their second drummer and occasional
ly sings some songs at their shows
He'll be playing acoustic tonight,
although I wouldn't be surprised it
things got loud 11p.m.
Memory Dean (Georgia Theatre)
Uptempo, tun acoustic rock. The band
has two released two albums on its
own. and will have their Capricorn
Records debut. Shake It Up. in stores
on July 29.
Old Toby (Hail Moon Pub) Jazz-blues
originals, plus some covers
Pop Cycle (DT's Down Under) Roots-
onented power pop Irom the Artists
Formerly Known As Cattish Jenkins.
They even play ‘The Safety Dance*
with knowing smiles
The Simpleton* (Lowery's) Rock
covers and originals
Sitter Hazel (Georgia Theatre)
Though it sounds like this Gainesville.
Ft*, band's original inspiration was the
A'lman Brothers. Sister Hazel has
moved in a more acoustic pop direc
tion. often moving into Counting
Crows territory before nodding to
Blues Traveller and the like Their new
album, on Universal Records, is
called Somewhere More Familiar
It's a solid — it not exactly ground
breaking — record, fusing iam-or»enl-
ed acoustic rock with percussion and
electric Southern pop Liner notes in
the album say ‘Sister Haze! was an
Atncan-American woman who ran
Sister Hazel's Rescue Mission’ in
Gainesville. Fla. during Ihe 70s and
early '80s This facility gave those who
were down on their luck a sate place to
stay warm, eat and regroup regardless
ot age. race or beliefs It is in this spin!
ot unconditional concern lor all beings
that we have chosen to use her name *
Playing with Memory Dean
Stuntdouble (40 Watt) Now a four-
piece. Stunldou&e is gassed-up. lubri
cated and ready for some hit-and-run
bailing garage rock action They're
playing with Ceiling Fan — one ol
drummer David Gerow's othe> jands
Wherever ft Goes (Wishbone*) ..it
goes Whatever will be. wilt be .. The
future* not ours to see .. Due sera
blah blah
Yahblo Canyon (Allen's) Electric

Friday, May S
Assfick (Dead Booy House) Death
Metal from Tampa I remember hearing
them a couple ol years ago on a com
pilation called / Suck. You Suck. We All
Suck in Tampa, where they me one ol
the standout bands among a lot ol
other protects that seemed way too
jokey Their new album is called
* 'tsery Index, leatunng 15 songs in 15
minutes Whoo' Call 369-9715 lor
more into on the show
Tbt Continentals (High Hat) The
Continentals play country, love songs,
and all around crooners, and come
highly recommended by iust about
everyone who has seen 'em — includ
ing me They're a dance band good
enough to listen to at home (with or
without boogie shoes), and they're
guaranteed to put a smile on yer mug
Dhnn Dag (40 Watt) Fast-paced rock
'n'roll along the lines ol Motorhead.
They're a good match with the new
Harvey Milk
Grace (Native America) This is the
debut set ot Grace* acoustic folk and
pop songs, although another local
band — leatunng part of tha band —
used this same name last year The
